Business Collaborations
We help businesses share knowledge around technology and innovation to solve problems, create synergies and reduce R&D costs. Contact us: callaghaninnovation.govt.nz
R&D Grants Business Collaborations We work with hundreds of innovative New Zealand businesses. We can help you to engage with potential partners on technology issues and opportunities, and form mutually beneficial collaborations. We help you work with like-minded businesses through: Cooperative innovation projects and joint ventures in targeted technology areas for businesses, industry associations and research organisations Facilitation of missions, workshops, and discussions with international technology-seeking delegations Partnerships to help solve common innovation and technology problems Engagement with clusters of Māori businesses with a desire to innovate or create shared opportunities. Case study New Zealand Telematics Alliance Callaghan Innovation and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE) bought together six New Zealand telematics companies to form the New Zealand Telematics Alliance. Facilitated by Callaghan Innovation and NZTE, these companies share their knowledge and insights and complementary technologies to bolster their chances for long-term success, both individually and as an industry. It is an effective way for the companies to reap the benefits of their expertise when competing with larger, much wealthier multinationals. The biggest success outside of the research is bringing together the institutional knowledge of all of the companies in a very apolitical way where they are able to share it before, it was all done in silos by individual companies. Richard McColl, Manager Ovine Automation Consortium (OAL). Business Collaborations \ 1
Collaborative Projects A problem shared is a problem halved. Callaghan Innovation can connect you with other world-class innovators and rapid adopters of new ideas, standards and ways of thinking. Whether you re a business that needs multiple types of research to advance your innovation or a group of businesses trying to solve a shared problem, it all comes together with a little collaboration. We help clusters of businesses build networks and create efficiencies to reduce research and development costs to individual businesses, create synergies and promote knowledge sharing. If you want your business to benefit from the traction of a community approach to innovation we can help you. Link with like-minded businesses so you can learn from the best on how the innovation system works, what the opportunities are, and build connections for the benefit of your business and innovation community Find a partner to solve an innovation or technology problem. We help by identifying New Zealand businesses with a shared interest in an opportunity, or barrier to commercialisation of an innovation, and provide access to these clusters and to the government s innovation sector We help detect patterns in industry needs and connect New Zealand businesses, industry associations, research organisations and technology service providers with emerging opportunities through joint projects and ventures Participate in collaborative projects and initiatives that inspire businesses to be early adopters of innovation. Who can get involved in business collaboration? Any business that has at least one director who is a New Zealand resident, and been incorporated in New Zealand, or have a centre of management or head office in New Zealand. How much will it cost? This is a free service that we offer as part of the government s drive to increase innovation, research and development, and high-value business in New Zealand. 2 \ Business Collaborations
How does business collaboration work? Phone us on and we ll put you in contact with a business relationship manager to discuss your particular needs. Your business relationship manager will frame up your project objectives, and if appropriate, find and introduce you to like-minded business that you could work with. Case study C-Prize The New Zealand screen industry s reputation for cutting-edge filmmaking is recognised around the world. Directors are increasingly using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to capture new perspectives and tell their stories. Combining New Zealand s open airspace and progressive regulations presented an awesome opportunity for New Zealand innovators and entrepreneurs to commercialise world-leading UAV technology for the screen industry. In 2015 Callaghan Innovation created the C-Prize competition to incentivise the advancement of unmanned aerial vehicles in the film industry. The ideas and innovation generated from the competition will fuel next-generation UAV technology for use in filmmaking.
Māori Economy Tēnā koe, nau mai haere mai. Māori businesses be they owned or managed by Māori are an essential and fast-growing part of the New Zealand economy. We can help your business grow a unique competitive edge with our expertise in: Connecting you to collaborative Māori-oriented business networks and clusters Facilitating missions, workshops and discussions with international delegations to understand global opportunities Who is this service for? Our Māori Economy team builds and maintains relationships with Māori stakeholders iwi, trusts and incorporations, and Māori businesses. Phone us on to be put in touch with our Māori Economy team. Helping you choose the right technical expertise and funding to convert concepts into viable offerings Helping you to access R&D and apply a Māori lens to your results. 4 \ Business Collaborations
