3 R&D Grants Innovation Skills We will help you build the in-house skills and capability you need to make sure your business is innovation-ready. We offer a range of programmes, training opportunities and workshops to help your business improve its performance, eliminate inefficient processes and activities, and increase customer satisfaction. High Performance Working Initiative (HPWI) to help your business achieve higher productivity through effective employee engagement and improved workplace practices Innovation Expert Series to provide your business access to the world s leading innovation practitioners and brains through targeted workshops that will help transform your business into the next innovation success story. 4 IMProve IMProve is a no-stone-unturned, multi-dimensional evaluation of your business. It s designed to measure your innovation management and performance against other businesses to help you stretch your capability and out-perform your competitors. Who is IMProve for? Business owners, innovators, leaders and senior managers. How will IMProve help your business? IMProve will provide you with: A quantitative comparison of your innovation processes, culture and business outcomes against international competitors An understanding of crucial innovation management issues and establishes a data point from where progress can be measured An understanding of what you re not doing that your highest growth competitors are, to help you define a growth-supporting innovation action plan for your business How does IMProve work? 1. You gather some well-defined quantitative data and provide it to us for benchmarking analysis. This usually takes 1-3 days. 2. Your business is allocated performance scores based on assessment in five areas: Innovation strategy Innovation organisation and culture Innovation life cycle processes Enabling factors Innovation results. 5 3. Your scores are compared with other businesses using the largest benchmarking database on innovation management. It includes over 4,000 companies that can be filtered into comparative data such as sector, size, age, country and revenue. You will be able to see not just the differences but the degree of difference. 4. A session, with assistance from us, is held with you at your premises to complete the on-line questionnaire. This usually takes 2-3 hours. 5. The IMProve report is analysed to identify steps to help your innovation growth. This takes us one week. 6. We hold a review session with you to help you develop your innovation action plan. This usually takes 2-3 hours. Do you get to keep the IMProve report? This covers a four hour preparation session, the assessment and the in-depth analysis of the results. 6 Innovation IP Innovation IP is a programme designed to give you the understanding, skills and confidence to manage and protect your own intellectual property (IP) and assets to reduce risk and enable growth. Who is Innovation IP for? New Zealand-based businesses that are: Generating new, valuable IP or intellectual assets Intending to maximise the value of intellectual assets they already control Committed to R&D and innovation Implementing a business plan based on stimulating growth and export aspirations Led by a supportive and engaged senior leadership team. How will Innovation IP help your business? Innovation IP will help you maximise value from your business (IP) by teaching you how to: Collect new information about your business so you understand the competitive IP landscape in which it is operating Develop and integrate your IP strategy with your business and R&D strategies, and planning processes Manage IP risk to improve your competitiveness - domestically and internationally Improve your understanding of freedom to operate and managing risks associated with potential infringement of another party s IP rights Confidently and cost effectively engage IP specialists. How does Innovation IP work? Innovation IP is delivered by Callaghan Innovation s IP advisory partners who each provide a tailored programme to meet your IP needs. Our partners are: EverEdgeIP Global Limited, Auckland Intellectus IP, a division of Potter IP Limited, Auckland MAINly Consulting Limited, Palmerston North, in association with IKB Consulting Limited, Hamilton. We ll help you decide which of the three programmes fits your business needs best. You ll attend an initial workshop designed to increase your understanding of IP asset strategy and management. 8 After the workshop an IP advisor will contact you to arrange a tailored Innovation IP programme specific to your business. Innovation IP workshops are held throughout the year in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. After the workshop your IP advisor will come to you at your business. How much does Innovation IP cost? Co-funding (50% up to a maximum of $20,000 excluding GST) is available for qualifying businesses for eligible costs incurred up to and including 30 June How do I get my business involved? A fee per person applies for attendance at the initial workshop, or per business depending on how many people from your business attend. 10 Better By Lean Better By Lean is a two-day workshop and coaching programme that applies a Lean Thinking lens to your entire operational system development processes, workflows, supply chains, production lines, distribution channels and customer touchpoints to boost your competitiveness and performance. Who is Better By Lean for? Business owners, innovators, leaders and senior managers across all business sectors from manufacturing to services. How will Better By Lean help your business? Better By Lean will help you: Identify customer value and reduce waste Facilitate and manage change in your business Improve planning, production flow and reduce lead times Reduce inventories, free up capital and save space Engage staff more effectively and develop their skills Create a culture of continuous improvement Implement Lean within your business to improve productivity, profitability, and international competitiveness. You can also join one of New Zealand s Lean clusters based in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier, Taranaki, Wanganui, Nelson and Dunedin. Clusters provide a support forum where you can share insights and ideas with other businesses on the Lean journey. How does Better By Lean work? In partnership with the University of Auckland, Callaghan Innovation delivers the Better By Lean workshops in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Ten workshops are held each year, and each workshop is two days in length. Registrations are limited to a maximum of three people from your business and priority is given to registrations from businesses new to the Better By Lean programme. Once you ve attended the workshop, you ll appoint a Better By Lean coach to get your Lean implementation underway. We recommend you talk to three to four consultants to evaluate expertise, experience, track record, their offer, fees and appropriate fit with your businesses. 8 \ Innovation Skills

11 With your coach you ll need to develop a draft plan that covers the first months of a sustainable Lean programme in your business and send it to us. If the draft complies with the criteria, a co-funding agreement will be raised for an agreed term (normally months). Once co-funding is in place, you start your Lean implementation plan. When you pay your Lean consultant, send invoices and a copy of your consultant s invoice to us for payment. You will also be asked to provide progress reports to us. After 12 months we will send you a questionnaire about productivity improvements you have achieved. How much does Better By Lean cost? The benefits of the Better by Lean initiatives were immediately evident in the area of staff looking for opportunities to reduce waste and improve workflows. We re also seeing benefits in improved workplace organisation and process improvement.
