1 Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association Report for the Year 2011/12 Chairman s Statement I am pleased to report that the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association operated satisfactorily last year with good progress in hostel improvement and Mei Ho House project. The Association runs seven hostels in Hong Kong, providing basic and affordable accommodation to local young people as well as international travelers. In addition, the Association commits to facilitating a variety of services to hostellers and providing an ideal platform for cultural exchange. Riding on the increased number of travelers to Hong Kong during the year, overnight occupancy of the hostels showed a moderate increase as compared to the previous year. Such growth was particularly significant at Jockey Club Mt. Davis Youth Hostel and Bradbury Jockey Club Youth Hostel which enjoyed higher popularity among mainland and overseas travelers. As a non-profit making organization with no government subvention, we promote the concept of healthy lifestyle, outdoor activity, self challenge, and care for the environment. In January 2012, we successfully organized again the annual charity walk in Ngong Ping, Lantau Island, with around 1,000 participants which attracted increased publicity in the community. The event also helped raise funds for the Association s operations and activities. Renovation of the Jockey Club Mt Davis Youth Hostel was completed in August 2012 and an opening ceremony was held at the end of September. The occasion was graced by the presence of Ms. Florence Hui, Under Secretary for Home Affairs and Mr. Lester Kwok, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, as the officiating guests. The newly refurbished hostel has been well-received among hostellers since then. Renovation work of Mei Ho House is expected to be completed in the middle of In the meantime, artefacts conservation and documentation of Mei Ho House of Livelihood are in progress. Preparation work is underway for the opening of the city hostel. I wish to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my fellow members of the Executive Committee for their support and guidance, and to all sub-committee/working group members and all the staff for their dedication and hard work. 2 Review of Operations Hostel Operations HKYHA s hostel operations include daily management of seven hostels, repair and maintenance of hostel facilities, major improvement projects and other support services. The Buildings & Operations Sub-Committee oversees the planning and implementation of repairs and maintenance works as well as hostel operations. During the year, improvement works were carried out in various hostels including replacement of air conditioners, beddings and blankets, installations of new equipments, dormitory painting works, and repairing of hostel facilities. Renovation of Jockey Club Mt Davis Youth Hostel completed The renovation work was completed in August 2012 and an opening ceremony was held on 28 September Ms. Florence Hui, Under Secretary for Home Affairs, and Mr. Lester Kwok, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, officiated the occasion with HKYHA Executive Committee members and other guests. The refurbished hostel is now equipped with an impressive array of new facilities including sea view twin rooms, backpack-sized lockers with built-in power sockets, a common room equipped with a pool table, and a canteen-cum-multi-purpose room. Marketing and Fundraising Activities Marketing function includes promotion of the HKYHA brand, hostel accommodation, and the Association s membership for hostellers as well as planning and implementation of promotion events. During the year, the following marketing and promotion events were organized: - Ngong Ping Charity Walk 2012 on 8 January University Roadshow between April and May Participated in the Hong Kong International Travel Expo in June Participated in the China (Guangdong) International Tourism Industry Expo in September 2012 YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel The Association is committed to revitalizing the historic building Mei Ho House into economically viable enterprise, bringing social and cultural benefits to the local community and overseas visitors. During the year, the revitalization works made significant progress. Wall restoration works was completed at Mei Ho House of Livelihood and new painting was applied on the restored walls. Artefacts conservation and documentation of Mei Ho House of Livelihood were finished. New air conditioners were installed on hostel rooftop. Moreover, on the Tuen Ng Festival in 2012, we organized the second gathering for members of Mei Ho House Alumni Network Voluntary Services The Association is widely supported by volunteers in organizing different kinds of activities and events for the benefit of travelers and young people. They organized regular outdoor activities at the Association s hostels. Besides, volunteers from higher education institutions also offered their help in various events.
