Main nursing and midwifery issues/priorities: At present, we face a shortage of nursing manpower including the recruitment and retention of nurses to work in public and private hospitals. Moreover, while there has been a sharp rise on the demand for midwives to provide obstetric service, the number of midwives has been decreasing and will further decrease upon retirement of experienced nurses with midwifery qualification in the coming years. 9. Important policies or strategies needed: The Government will ensure an adequate supply of nurses through various measures including encouraging tertiary institutions to increase student places and strengthen nursing training programmes provided by the Hospital Authority. The Hospital Authority will also implement a series of measures to strengthen the workforce and improve retention of nurses. Besides, there is an urgent need to attract more nurses to undertake midwifery training for the purpose of meeting enormous demand for maternity services.
