1 1987 Audi Sport Rally It is five years now since our first sponsorship of the Audi Sport rally, and we are delighted once more to join forces with the Wolverhampton and South Staffs Car Club in backing this year's event. The location of the Rally has moved during this period, from Aberystwyth, where it had been based for many years, to Shrewsbury which has hosted the event since The reasons for this move were to bring the start of the event closer to a centre of population and also make the start more accessible for competitors. With this policy to improve the quality of the event and its facilities for both spectator and competitor alike, we have moved the base of the event once more to Telford. This further re-location it is hoped will provide even better access to the start of the event as well as providing a Rally Headquarters hotel much more ably equipped to house competitors and officials under one roof, without detracting from the well established nature of the Rally. This year's event includes a number of new routes through the classic Welsh forests, including Pantperthog for the first time in four years, ending with an exciting spectator stage in the heart of Telford, totalling some 85 stage miles altogether. I would like finally to thank competitors and spectators for their interest in the event, the town of Telford for welcoming us so enthusiastically and the organisers, the Wolverhampton and South Staffs Car Club, once more for their tremendous efforts, and at a time when rallying is still attracting some critique in terms of general safety I would ask you to follow the directions of marshals and rally officials to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe Audi Sport Rally. 2 TODAYS EVENT The AUDI SPORT RALLY is organised by the Wolverhampton & South Staffs Car Club Ltd. and is the final round of the Marlboro/Autosport/RAC National Rally Championship. The Event is held under the general regulations of the RAC Motor Sports Association Ltd (incorporating the provisions of the international sporting code of the FIA) and the supplementary regulations issued by the promoting club. 8 1987 MARLBORO/AUTOSPORT NATIONAL RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP TO DATE The Championship got off to a fresh start with the Bournemouth-based Citroen National Winter Rally included for the first time. The entry included Malcolm Wilson's 'Clubman' MG Metro, which set the pace for the privately entered Metros and as expected he won the event. Carlisle's Dougie Watson-Clark led home Group A in his Sierra Cosworth and Simon Stubbings brought his Mazda 323 4WD home first in Group N. Round 2 was the established Skip Brown Rally. In which competitors faced arctic-like conditions over the majority of the 15 special stages. Wilson again took the honours, with David Gillandes finishing runner up. David Mann's Toyota was first in Group A, and Stubbings again Group N winner. In April on the Northsound Granite City Rally, Gillanders scored a home win & Metros took the first five places. Trevor Smith (Sierra Cosworth) won Group A and Stubbings notched up his third Group N victory. In the Lada Challenge Ken Benefield was first and Alan Christopher won the Skoda Trophy. Bertie Fisher came out of retirement to win the all tarmac Manx National Rally in May. Iwan Roberts (Manta 400) was best of the Championship contenders in fourth place. Russell Brookes was 5th and first Group A. Two months later Port Talbot MC hosted the Kayel Graphics Rally and Gillanders provided his Welsh co-driver Ken Rees with a 'Home' win. Roger Clark took second and Iwan Roberts third. Based in Carlisle the Cumbria Rally in August used stages in the Kidder. Forest and Steve Whiteford provided the surprise of the event. Winning by 30 seconds ahead of Roger Clark. Trevor Smith won Group A and John Saint took Group N in his Toyota. The Quip Forest Rally last month saw Ken Wood (Metro 6R4) win his first National Championship event since Trevor Smith won Group A and Stubbings took Group N to win category in the overall Championship. With one round to go only three drivers can win the Championship today. David Gillanders (Metro 6R4) has 132 points. While Trevor Smith, in his Sierra. Cosworth with 114 points & Russell Brookes (Vauxhall Astra) on 112 points are the only three drivers who can win the title.
