3 CSI Forensic Science Camp Greetings! Summer is quickly approaching and that means CSI Forensic Science Camp is just around the corner! Due to the great success of the last summer camp, World Journal, in collaboration with The Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science, University of New Haven, and United Daily News, is thrilled to be joining more campers this summer. This summer will be a plus to campers current academic performance and their future career pursuit. CSI Forensic Science Camp will offer a 14-day class in forensics filed and a 3-day Science Exploration Program, including campus tours, tours of the White House, Museums and World Journal. World Journal is excited to welcome Dr. Henry Lee as one of this year s Camp Instructor. Campers will be instructed how to complete a professional forensic report using the newest forensic skills and techniques. Some of the topics of the class covered range from general forensic knowledge, drug analysis, blood and DNA analysis, hair analysis, trace evidence analysis to transfer of materials. In addition, our experienced staff will be also assisting you with any helps that you might need during the camp. Whether we have met over the past several years or will be meeting for the first time, we cannot wait to welcome you to be the part of CSI Forensic Science Camp. 5 Research and Training Center Areas of research include crime scene investigation, human biometric identification, DNA and other biological evidence, trace evidence, drugs and narcotics, teleforensic communications and cybercrime detection. Forensic Crisis Management and Investigation Center The Forensic Crisis Management and Investigation Center the Command Center provides the tools to handle any major incident requiring immediate forensic expertise such as advanced technology, mobilization of experts, crime scene investigation, identification of victims and other forensic-related activities. 5

6 Advanced Technology Center The state-of-the-art equipment in the Advanced Technology Center includes 3D laser scanning, instruments for the analysis of documents and other materials with alternate light combinations, ground penetrating radar, and other computerized crime scene equipment. The Forensic Science Learning Center Within the Learning Center there are several touch screen kiosks that allow the visitor to study various famous cases, to learn more about a particular area of forensic science and to use hands-on activity stations. 6

7 Lee is one of the world's foremost forensic scientists and founder of the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science. Lee is currently the Chief Emeritus for Scientific Services for the State of Connecticut and a lecture professor of forensic science at the University of New Haven. He has worked on famous cases such as the JonBenét Ramsey murder, the Helle Crafts woodchipper murder, the O.J. Simpson and Laci Peterson cases, the post-9/11 forensic investigation, the Washington, DC sniper shootings and to reinvestigate the assassination of John F. Kennedy. 7

8 Elaine Pagliaro Cold case analysis, with examples of actual cases that were solved after more than 20 years. Cold Cases have exhausted all known leads. This course will cover review of cases, development of new leads, reconstruction of the scene, behavioral analysis, DNA and CODIS, evidence review, and consultation. 8

13 Syllabus Course Description: This course presents an overview of the scientific method and its application to the analysis of physical evidence as it impacts forensic investigations. This course will also provide the student with knowledge of basic concepts of case and crime scene investigation. Topics include the study of the steps in the processing of scenes and evidence; basic methods of documentation, collection and preservation of physical evidence; general schemes for the analysis of chemical and biological evidence; identification and individualization of evidence such as fingerprints, imprints, hairs, fibers, blood and body fluids, paint, drugs and poisons, and other materials associated with crimes. The course material will be reinforced through the use of actual case studies, hands-on exercises, and class exercises. Instruction Methodologies: Learning methodologies will include lecture, hands-on experiments by students, mock crime scene processing and team participation, field trips to laboratories, museums and/or universities with discussion by other scientific experts. Students will be required to discuss their findings during experiments and after crime scene exercises. 13

14 Syllabus Outcomes: Upon completion of this course the student will have an introductory knowledge of the following: Application of the forensic approach to the analysis of physical evidence. Analysis of forensic issues in law enforcement and evidence technologies in today s investigations Discussion of the standards for the admissibility of scientific evidence and challenges to traditional evidence, such as fingerprints & firearms evidence. Identification of the basic methods of evidence collection and preservation. Identification of the characteristics of imprints and the methods to develop latent patterns. Identification of physical evidence and use of these as field tests by crime scene personnel. Utilization of the steps in the individualization process for blood and body fluids. Explanations of the steps in the analysis of trace and transfer materials. Association between handwriting and factors that affect individual characteristics. Interpretation of scene patterns and bloodstain pattern analysis. The types of investigations and the need for a scientific approach. The role of the first responder and subsequent actors at a scene. Demonstrate the common methods for proper documentation during an investigation. Describe the common methods for searching for physical evidence. Completing a scene report and presenting the report and rationale to the class. 14
