1 2013 Youth Summer Internship Program for High School Girls June - August 2013 Location: West/Central Harlem Deep Dish Waves of Change is offering a professional opportunity for 5 female New York City high school students. This paid Summer Internship Program is open to all high schoolers living in Community Board 9 who are interested in learning more about web design/development and journalism. The internship runs July - August Interns selected must commit to the full program and are required to attend weekly sessions. Interns will receive a $750 stipend plus transportation. Write, research, and create your own community media pieces Build creative workplace skills Develop your programming knowledge Work and learn from technical experts and community leaders Receive a generous stipend and build professionalism Become educators among your peers and within your community by sharing your experiences through presentations at school and in the community Make a difference in your community and the world Learn about web design computer programming journalism and history of community media! Waves of Change is a survey of community media around the world: radio, tv, theater, murals, comics, etc. as resistance to commercial culture. This summer internship project is made possible by a grant from the West Harlem Local Development Corporation & Deep Dish Network.

2 This program is open to all female high school students, including 2013 graduates, who have an interest in learning about web design/development, community media, and journalism. We will consider highly motivated and interested middle school students. All those interested in the program are highly encouraged to apply. Accepted students will receive a $750 stipend and will have an option to continue to work with the project during the academic year at a regular salary. Students must be able to commit to all of the following dates: Summer Internship: July - August days per week and outside class time work. If you miss a class due to sickness or unforseen circumstances, you will be expected to make it up on your own time. 4 MORE ABOUT WAVES OF CHANGE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM You are applying for a unique, fun, and educational internship. As part of the program, you will be learning about web design and development, open source technology, maps, and journalism. Your days will be filled with exciting activities that range from programming, design, conducting interviews, uploading content to the map, and research. You will be highly involved in the community attending local events, and it is expected that you will put time in outside of class to complete assignments. You will become spokeswomen for the project and will present work to local community groups and high school and college classes in West Harlem and throughout New York City. This summer internship project is made possible by a generous grant from the West Harlem Local Development Corporation and Deep Dish Network. ABOUT DRUPAL Drupal content management system is one of the most in-demand technology skillsets. Drupal is the open source technology that powers sites such as Harlem Globetrotters and many brands, non-profits and educational organizations that you know World Economic Forum, Amnesty International, New York City Public Library, and Studio Museum Harlem. You can have the opportunity to gain freelance work and to kickstart a career in development and design. ABOUT WAVES OF CHANGE Waves of Change is a web site, a global interactive map, and a trusted source for community media around the world. Over a million and half unique visitors used the site just in the last year. Waves of Change is used by community media makers world-wide. ABOUT DEEDEE HALLACK, WAVES OF CHANGE FOUNDER & PROGRAM COORDINATOR DeeDee Halleck. Halleck is Professor Emerita of the Department of Communication, University of California, San Diego and she is the founder of Paper Tiger Television and co-founder of Deep Dish Television Network and Democracy Now Television. She has produced over fifty films and videos and has curated dozens of exhibitions and installations. She is the author of Hand Held Visions, Fordham University Press, and numerous articles on media education and independent media. ABOUT CLAUDINA SARAHE, INSTRUCTOR & CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT Claudina is a veteran web development and entrepreneur. She was a founding member of UNICEF Innovation and has lead projects for Daniel Libeskind, Scholastic, PBS, and Huffington Post. She is on the board of MACILE, a STEM education program based in the Dominican Republic. Claudina is the co-founder of Autotax.me, a Y Combinator startup finalist.

5 INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS Your child has the opportunity to participate in a very unique and instructional internship. We need your support and approval. If you know your child would love this program but there are circumstances that may prevent your child from applying, we encourage you to reach out to us. We ll do our best to help and accomadate unique circumstances, including but not limited to your child s medical needs, geography, finances, and language. The Waves of Change Summer Internship Program will provide lunch and snacks for all interns. Trips and excursions around the community are an integral part of the summer internship. Transportation will be provided. You will need to sign and return the attached release waiver. We will have press and media coverage about the course. Your child may be photographed, video recorded or interviewed as part of her participation in the project. If you do not want your child to appear in any printed or digital material, please check appropiate consent box. All consent forms must be received before the start of the program.
