The academic advisr will cunsel, but the final respnsibility fr a successful cllege career rests with the student. T earn a baccalaureate degree frm the University f Nrth Carlina at Pembrke, students must earn between 120 and 128 hurs f curse credit in a prgram f study that includes a Freshman Seminar (FRS 100), required f all freshmen during their first 15 hurs, a General Educatin prgram f 44 hurs, and at least ne academic majr. UNC Pembrke perates n the traditinal tw semester system and ffers an extensive summer prgram designed t permit the academic acceleratin f regular university students and t serve the needs f public schl teachers. Summer Sessin is divided int tw terms. REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR A majr is a planned prgram f study f between semester hurs f curse credit, exclusive f curses applied t satisfy General Educatin requirements. At least 15 hurs f credit must be in curses numbered abve Detailed requirements fr majrs have been established by each department and can be fund in the sectins f this catalg describing undergraduate prgrams f study in the Cllege f Arts and Sciences, the Schl f Business, and the Schl f Educatin. REQUIREMENTS FOR A DOUBLE MAJOR A student may elect t earn majrs in tw separate disciplines n the cnditin that the student meets all requirements fr each majr. The student wh cmpletes requirements fr mre than ne majr will receive nly ne degree, but at the time f initial graduatin, the recrd will indicate bth majrs. REQUIREMENTS FOR A SECOND BACCALAUREATE DEGREE A student with a bachelr s degree may receive a secnd baccalaureate degree as lng as the secnd degree is in a different majr and by meeting the fllwing requirements: (1) The student must meet all the requirements fr the secnd degree and majr. (2) The student must cmplete a minimum f 30 hurs in residence beynd the requirement fr the first degree. (A minimum f 150 hurs is required.) (3) The student must meet with the majr department chair t determine an individual educatin plan. This plan must be frwarded t the Registrar. A student withut a bachelr s degree may receive tw different baccalaureate degrees by fulfilling the fllwing requirements: (1) The student must meet all the requirements fr ne degree (primary majr). (2) The student must cmplete a minimum f 30 unduplicated hurs in a different majr and a different degree (secndary majr). (A minimum f 150 hurs is required.) (3) The student must meet with bth majr department chairs t determine an individual educatin plan. This plan must be frwarded t the Registrar. NOTE: Fr students earning a baccalaureate degree ther than their first, a 50% tuitin surcharge shall be applied t all cunted credit hurs that exceed 110% percent f the minimum additinal credit hurs needed t earn the additinal baccalaureate degree.

The class will include discussins and activities abut academic challenges, independence, time management, and becming an integral part f the UNCP experience. If students have already declared a majr, then they will be enrlled in an FRS 1000 curse specifically tailred t the needs f that curse f study; undeclared students will participate in FRS 1000 curses that will help them cnsider areas f pssible interest and future plans. Students invlved in a Living Learning Cmmunity will take the curse tgether. This class is a gateway t the university that enables students t cnnect t faculty and academic services while als intrducing strategies t be successful in cllege. A grade f C (2.0) r better must be earned t satisfy the Freshman Seminar requirement. COURSES (FRS) FRS Freshman Seminar General intrductin t the academic substance, study methds, and special adjustment prblems f university life. Cnducted by faculty and staff frm varius departments. FRS Learning Cmmunity FRS 1010 is a nn-credit-bearing curse that allws members f a learning cmmunity t receive additinal infrmatin regarding their cmmunity, interact with cmmunity members, and attend events that will strengthen their academic and scial integratin at UNCP. 5 Undergraduate 25 TRANSFER STUDENT SEMINAR Crdinatr: Elizabeth Freba The purpse f Transfer Student Seminar is t help immerse transfer students int the academic life and scial life at UNC Pembrke. This curse aims t give students the knw-hw n hw t nt nly navigate the campus at UNC Pembrke, but t als becme familiar with the academic and University plicies n campus and t familiarize students with the resurces that UNC Pembrke has t ffer. COURSE (TRS) TRS New Transfer Seminar A general intrductin t the University cnsisting f plicies, prcedures, and resurces. Students will als reflect n their academic study skills, the way they view change, and utilizatin f infrmatin technlgy. Credit, 1 semester hur. INTRODUCTION TO ACADEMIC RESEARCH Crdinatr: TBA This curse explres all f the majr facets f the academic research prcess. We will discuss the nature f infrmatin (hw it is created, hw it is rganized, why it is useful bth academically and in everyday life, etc.). We will discuss the benefits and limitatins f different resurce types. We will cver tpic develpment, the creatin and use f effective search strings, the use f catalgs and databases, the use f discipline-specific infrmatin surces, the use f gvernment and statistical surces, critical evaluatin f surces, plagiarism and hw t avid it, and citatin styles as they relate t specific disciplines. Students can apprach this curse as a general intrductin t imprtant academic skills, r they can als use it as a frm f cmpanin curse fr ther curses, in which there is a significant research-based academic assignment. COURSE (LIB) LIB Intrductin t Academic Research This general elective curse will intrduce students t the basic infrmatin literacy skills necessary t lcate, critically evaluate, and ethically use infrmatin fr academic research assignments. It is ideal fr bth new students and transfer students. Credit, 1 semester hur. CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Directr: Karen Pruett This prgram, ffered by the Career Center, is designed fr students at all academic levels and in all majrs. The purpse f the prgram is t assist students in develping the skills required fr successful, lifelng career planning. COURSE (CAR) CAR Intrductin t Career Develpment Students are expsed t all aspects f the career planning prcess, including self-assessment, decisinmaking related t chsing a majr and identifying related career ptins, gal setting, career and jb research, and jb search tls and strategies. The University f Nrth Carlina at Pembrke seeks t graduate students with brad visin, wh are sensitive t values, wh recgnize the cmplexity f scial prblems, and wh will be cntributing citizens with an internatinal perspective and an appreciatin fr achievements f diverse civilizatins. In additin t meeting all majr prgram requirements, students awarded baccalaureate degrees by The University f Nrth Carlina at Pembrke are required t cmplete a 44 hur General Educatin prgram. The General Educatin prgram has been designed t prvide students with an understanding f the fundamental principles and cntributins f a variety f disciplines and t fster the ability t analyze and weigh evidence, exercise quantitative and scientific skills, make infrmed decisins, write and speak clearly, and think critically and creatively. Critical Thinking The UNCP graduate will read and think critically. The student will distinguish between facts and pinins, judgments and inferences, inductive and deductive arguments, and reliable and invalid surces f infrmatin; successfully apply critical reading skills t a wide range f materials; and demnstrate the ability t apply critical thinking skills t the interpretatin and analysis f infrmatin frm a variety f surces. Prblem Slving The UNCP graduate will be a creative prblem slver. The student will identify and define a prblem, cllect and rganize infrmatin necessary t slve a prblem, select and cnduct apprpriate analysis t slve a prblem, and make decisins based n evidence and reasning. Mathematics The UNCP graduate will use quantitative methds and mathematical principles t recgnize and slve prblems, interpret data, and perfrm basic cmputatin. The student will express and manipulate mathematical infrmatin, cncepts, and thughts in verbal, numeric, graphical, and symblic frm while slving a variety f prblems; apply basic math principles t practical situatins; and be able t demnstrate mathematical literacy. Individual and Sciety The UNCP graduate will demnstrate knwledge f human behavir, cultures, and scieties, as well as scial, plitical, and ecnmic institutins and relatinships. The student will describe the methds used by scial scientists t gather, analyze, and draw cnclusins frm data as they seek t understand individual and grup behavirs; identify hw the results f scial science research is critical t an infrmed understanding f cntemprary scial issues; and apply scial science principles and theries t understand significant American and wrld ecnmic, cultural, plitical, and scial phenmena and trends. Science and Nature The UNCP graduate will understand the fundamental principles f the natural sciences as well as the purpse, methds, and principles f scientific inquiry. The student will describe the methds used by natural scientists t gather and critically evaluate data using the scientific methd; identify and explain the basic cncepts, terminlgy, and theries f the natural sciences; apply selected natural science cncepts and theries t cntemprary issues and acknwledge the develping nature f science; and demnstrate an understanding f hw human activity affects the natural envirnment and make infrmed judgments abut science-related tpics and plicies. Cmmunicatin Skills (6 r 9 hurs) ENG 1050 Cmpsitin I ENG 1060 Cmpsitin II A full time student must enrll in ENG 1050, Cmpsitin I, immediately and must earn a C (2.0) grade r better befre enrlling in ENG 1060, Cmpsitin II. A student must remain cntinuusly enrlled in ENG 1050 and 1060 until he r she has earned a C (2.0) grade r better in ENG All entering freshmen and all freshmen transfers must cmplete the ENG 1050 and 1060 sequence successfully befre they earn a ttal f 60 credit hurs. All students wh transfer with 30 credits r mre must cmplete ENG 1060 during their first 30 semester hurs at UNCP. Students wh have nt cmpleted their cmpsitin curses at the end f the alltted time will n lnger be permitted t register fr 3000 r 4000 level curses.
