This termly newsletter highlights some of the recent Hub activity and also lets you know about what s coming up and how you can get involved. 2 New for Secondary Schools The BBC Ten Pieces project has now been expanded to include secondary schools. A new repertoire of ten pieces has been especially chosen for Key Stage 3 pupils and the new film will be launched in cinemas in October. There are free cinema screenings of the film for secondary schools across the country, including Cornwall (Newquay, Penzance, St Austell and Truro) on 6 th and 7 th October. To book your places, visit - The BBC Ten Pieces project is creating a set of KS3 classroom resources and these will soon be available on the website. Ten Pieces Primary Over the last six months, hundreds of primary schools have been creating their own pieces of work, inspired by one of the Ten Pieces. These have been uploaded to the website, and in some cases, even performed at the Ten Pieces Prom which was held at the Royal Albert Hall in July. The free resources for Key Stage 2 are still available on the BBC Ten Pieces website. These include simple arrangements of the pieces, masterclass videos and lesson plans. The Ten Pieces homepage can be found at: programmes/b0647v1v Featured resource The ebook Guide to the Orchestra - is a video-rich interactive guide to the orchestra for all age groups that complements Ten Pieces. Barney Harwood from Blue Peter introduces the families of instruments, and professional musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales explain how their instruments work and make sounds. Children can test their knowledge with fun quizzes and learn some basics about music notation in an interactive game with the motif from Beethoven s 5th Symphony. Unusual facts about the instruments will engage young readers. All text is voiced by Barney so can be listened to as well as read. This free resource is available to download at - guidetotheorchestra/ First Access Free whole class instrumental teaching First Access is a 12 week programme which aims to introduce students in Key Stages 1-3 to learning an instrument. The scheme is delivered weekly for a term to the whole class, including the teacher. The programme consists of: An initial planning meeting. 10 weekly 45 minute instrumental lessons (on the same instrument) for the whole class. A review meeting. The CMEH is able to offer grants to schools to fund a music specialist to deliver these sessions. The grants are available for any classes who have not previously benefitted from the scheme. Schools will need to identify a suitable deliverer for the sessions and also provide their own instruments. The Hub can assist in this as we have a list of teachers/ organisations who are able to deliver First Access and also sets of instruments which can be hired at the subsidised rate of 70 per term A key part of the programme is that the classroom teacher learns alongside the students in order to develop their musical skills and confidence, therefore the classroom teacher is required to participate in the sessions. 3 Hubbub 2015! The Cornwall Music Education Hub held its second free family music festival at Heartlands in June. Over the two days, nearly 3000 people visited the festival to take part in workshops and watch performances by community, school and Hub bands and ensembles. The event featured performances of music from the BBC s Ten Pieces project, including a workshop by the Cornwall Youth Orchestra where young visitors were introduced to Grieg s Hall of the Mountain King, Mars from The Planets and Stravinsky s Firebird. On the Saturday, families joined the Cornwall Boys and Girls Choirs to take part in a massed sing of Zadok the Priest. As well as the performances, the festival featured a range of free music workshops: Early years music, African and Taiko drumming, Pop Choir, Gamelan and Music Technology. Hubbub 2016! Next year s music festival will focus on world music and will be held on Sunday 26 th June, Monday 27 th June and Tuesday 28 th June at Heartlands. Music makes The Wonderful World of Oliver Jeffers even more magical The Cornwall Music Education Hub and KEAP are working together to bring musical storytelling to The Wonderful World of Oliver Jeffers installation at Cornwall College. The enchanting and much-loved installation arrives in Cornwall on the 14 th of September and opens to the public on the 3 rd October. As part of the hands-on, walk-through experience children aged 3 to 7 years are able to step inside their favourite Oliver Jeffers stories and become the characters in his books. School groups can book sessions during the week and the public are welcome at weekends and during half term. As well as taking part in a live storytelling session, the pre-bookable music sessions, led by Roger Luxton, will encourage young children to create stories and soundscapes in response to their experience inside the installation. Children will be given a variety of percussion and musical instruments and invited to write lyrics, create rhythms and be part of making new music. The pre- and primary school sessions have been devised to meet foundation and key stage 1 learning objectives. Children are given a variety of tasks and adventures while travelling through the different stories and, after the session, they can share their experiences and take part in live story-telling. The music sessions will take place on Wednesdays and can also be prebooked depending on availability. We are really excited to be able to add a musical dimension to The Wonderful World of Oliver Jeffers. 4 Vocal Strategy Update Written by CMEH Vocal Strategy Lead, Angela Renshaw Recent activities Boys on a Bus! Girls on a Bus! April 2015 Two coaches filled with singers from the Cornwall Boys Choir, Cambiata Cornwall and Cornwall Girls Choir departed Truro early on Saturday 18 th April, bound for the far extremes of the county. This is the second time that Boys on a Bus has taken place, this time with the addition of the girls, who joined in for a wonderful day of singing and performing. The aim of the event was to showcase the young singers of Cornwall and to enable them to perform in shopping centres and market squares on a mini whirl-wind tour of Cornwall, culminating with a mass sing in Truro. The Girls Bus Tour started off at Lands End and then made its way through St Ives and West Cornwall to Heartlands, Pool before arriving back in Truro. The Boys Bus Tour started off in Callington, assisted by local male voice choir members who helped to boost the sound. Then onto Wadebridge, where the choir was joined by members of Wadebridge Male Voice Choir, followed by Newquay town centre, where again awaited members of the local Male Voice Choir, before heading back to Truro. The fun packed day was rounded off with a joint performance to a huge crowd in Truro. The tour heralded the start of the International Male Voice Choral Festival in which hundreds of singers from around the world performed. Performing at Hubbub June 2015 Being part of a choir often involves the whole family, if not only in terms of organising the singers to and from rehearsals and so we decided that for our final summer performance this year, Cornwall Boys Choir and Cornwall Girls Choir would invite family members to participate in an informal Come and Sing event at Heartlands as part of Hubbub We decided to teach the family choir a version of the infamous Zadok The Priest, which is one of the BBC Ten Pieces. Known for its tricky final section, we were able to use one of the new arrangements located on the BBC Ten Pieces website in 2- part form, and this greatly reduced the amount of rehearsal time we needed, whilst at the same time, still retaining the full impact of the masterpiece! Matt, Shelley and Angela led the singing to a final performance of the piece which was enjoyed by the audience and singers. We hope to repeat this type of event again in the future! Choir Developments Cornwall County Youth Choir New for Autumn 2015 The Cornwall Music Education Hub will be launching a new choir for young people aged years from September This choir will offer a wide and varied repertoire and will meet monthly. Membership will be through an audition process and there will be an annual membership fee of 100. For further details contact: Angela Renshaw [email protected] North Cornwall The ever growing Cornwall County Choirs will expand into North Cornwall from September 2015 onwards. A new local regional rehearsal group, based in Camelford will enable all keen singers to become part of the county choir set up. The Camelford group will also meet up with the other regional rehearsal groups for full choir rehearsals, workshops and concerts. Information about all of our choirs can be found on Forthcoming Vocal Activities Songfest 2016 The Hub will be delivering a showcase of vocal talent in Spring 2016 in its county-wide vocal festival. Songfest is a vocal training and performance S O N G F E S T opportunity that has been offered to all primary and secondary schools, and settings in Cornwall. Led by Angela Renshaw and Patrick Bailey, the festival will involve schoolbased workshops and training during the Autumn and Spring Terms, rehearsals and final performances in the following venues: The Hall For Cornwall on 7 th March 2016 Falmouth Pavilions on 10 th March 2016 Chapel Street Methodist Chapel, Penzance on 14 th March 2016 Launceston Town Hall on 15 th - 16 th March 2016 The concerts will involve local up and coming soloists and choirs as well as a mass choir of 200 children who will perform, Ocean Commotion by Debbie Campbell

5 NYCGB Workshop opportunities Come and Sing Workshop Building on our partnership with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the Hub will continue to offer exciting vocal opportunities for both young singers and vocal leaders. On 19 th September 2015, Esther Jones will lead a day of vocal workshops for young singers to explore ways to develop vocal skills, and in particular, to assist with audition processes. The workshop has been divided into two sessions; session 1 for pupils in years 5-8, session 2 for students in years Teachers and choral leaders are also invited to attend either session. Vocal Composition Workshop On Friday 16th October 2016 ( pm) and Saturday 17th October 2016 (10am-4pm), Ben Parry and The NYCGB Fellowship Octet will deliver a two day workshop aimed at young people studying for Music at GCSE, BTEC or A Level, or for those who are vocalists or songwriters. Students will spend time creating new works under the guidance of Ben Parry, composer and Director of the NYCGB which will then be performed by the Fellowship Octet. Empowering Choral Leaders Stuart Barr Workshop The fabulous Stuart Barr will return to Cornwall on 9 th and 10 th November. Stuart s workshops in 2014 were so popular that we have invited him back for more! Stuart s topic this time is Can You Teach the X-Factor? This workshop looks at how one can teach the apparently intangible magnetic factor we all love when we see it. If you were unable to attend last time, we strongly suggest that you don t miss out again! Online orchestra project 12th July 2015 saw the premiere performance of the Online Orchestra: an ensemble featuring musicians located throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, playing live together over the internet. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Cornwall Music Education Hub and the Philharmonia Orchestra, the concert was the culmination of a year-long research project designed to look at how the internet can be used to bring together people who live in remote locations. As such, the premiere included flautists located at the Five Islands School on the Isles of Scilly, brass players from the St Keverne Brass Band at Mullion School, and singers and string players located in Truro Cathedral. The conductor was located at Falmouth University. The concert was supported by nearly 500 attendees across the 4 locations. Many challenges were faced and overcome during the project, such as how to work with latency, how to deal with echo, what type of equipment was needed and how to perform with other musicians that you'd never met in person. This led to the project team developing their own software, and to the commissioning of three new works designed explicitly for the Online Orchestra. The concert on the 12th therefore included world premieres of works by John Pickard, Jim Aitchison and Federico Reuben. The concert was only the start, though. What has been proven over the last year, and in the concert in particular, is that online music making is possible in the community: that people who live hundreds, thousands even, of miles apart can make music together over the internet. All you need is a computer, an internet connection, an instrument and a sense of adventure! For more information on the project, or to get involved, please visit Autumn Twilight Sessions Every Term the Hub delivers free twilight sessions around the county for music co-ordinators/educators. Secondary Network Meetings Patrick Bailey is leading the secondary support programme on behalf of the Hub and will be running termly network meetings for secondary school music teachers and Heads of Music which are free to attend. Monday 12th October 2015 in central area Thursday 15th October 2015 in north/east Tuesday 20th October 2015 in the west All sessions will be 4.30pm pm. 6 The fabulous Philharmonia s iorchestra project has unfortunately now come to the end of its second and final year. Over the last two years, an incredible 120,000 people have visited the MusicLab truck, iorchestra tent or attended one of the concerts in Torbay, Plymouth and Devon. One of the key aims of the project has been to introduce classical music to a new audience, and going by the feedback received so far, it has certainly been successful in doing that. The project culminated in Cornwall with two free concerts by the Philharmonia Orchestra; an open air public concert on Lemon Quay and the schools concert in the Hall For Cornwall, both introduced and conducted by Charles Hazlewood. The public concert on the Sunday afternoon ended in a rousing rendition of Trelawney, arranged by Russell Pascoe and conducted by young local conductor, Angus Webster. The Hubs in these areas are continuing to work with the Philharmonia, as well as other partners such as the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, to build on the interest generated by this project and to offer opportunities with which these new audiences can engage. Sounds from the Hub The Hub held its annual celebration of musical talent with a two night musical showcase at the Hall for Cornwall on 30 th April and 1 st May. Children and young people from schools, colleges, Falmouth University and local ensembles stretching from Penzance to Saltash were invited to perform at the event. Each night had a different programme of soloists, bands, ensembles and choirs and over the two days nearly 1000 young people had the opportunity to perform. The event was compered by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Associates and local musicians, Patrick Bailey and Matt Harrison. Each night presented a varied programme of acts and musical styles from orchestral classical pieces, traditional songs and modern arrangements to rock, pop, blues, soul and musical theatre. Both concerts also included performances by massed choirs created especially for the event with 100 singers from different primary schools. The choirs had been learning the same repertoire in their schools leading up to the event and came together to sing for the first time on the day of the concert. The choirs were led by Christine Judge, Emma Mansfield and Emily Foulkes. Instrument Hire The Cornwall Music Education Hub has a large pool of instruments available to hire by any student. We also have class sets of some instruments which are available for schools to hire at a subsidised rate. Students in receipt of Free School Meals, Children in Care and children of Services Families can apply for a subsidy on their instrument hire fee. 7 School Engagement Update Each term the Hub engages music specialists to work with clusters of schools on time limited projects, usually leading to a performance. Here are some recent projects Moor and Coastal Arts project - North Cornwall The Moor and Coastal Arts project brought together several North Cornwall schools with local artists to produce a showcase of performance at Sterts Theatre on July 14 th Arts, Dance, Drama and Music all played important roles in the festival, organised by Amanda Musgrove of Sir James Smiths School. One of the musical elements of this project was to combine the vocal forces of Otterham, Camelford, St Breward, St Teath, Tintagel and Delabole primary schools to create a Moor and Coastal Choir of 100 singers especially for the event. Choir members were drawn from across both KS1 and KS2. The Hub funded a vocal leader s time to visit the schools during the summer term and teach a repertoire of songs which reflected the theme of the festival. During the visits the vocal leaders shared simple vocal and performance techniques with the pupils and teachers as well as vocal leadership skills that the pupils very much enjoyed taking part in. The choirs also looked at part singing as one of the songs included a chorus that was easily re arranged into three parts. The final performance was both exhilarating and uplifting with 100 voices performing to a packed Sterts Theatre. Redruth Cluster It has been another busy term where primary engagement work is concerned for CMST s Christine Judge. Having finished the Spring term on a high with the two cluster choirs at Hall for Cornwall it was time to get cracking on a new exciting cluster project, this time focusing on compositition work with the Redruth cluster. Three primary schools were keen to be involved and take on the challenge of creating their very own pieces in response to the BBC Ten Pieces programme. Christine, Curriculum and Vocal Manager with Cornwall Music Service Trust and John Brolly, storyteller, created this project, working with teachers and pupils at Treleigh, Lanner and Pennoweth to create three very individual pieces. Treleigh took John Adams Short Ride in a Fast Machine as their starting point and, after listening to the piece, experimented and improvised before finalising a wonderful instrumental piece with movement to match the music, led by their own conductor. Lanner began by listening to Stravinsky s The Firebird and explored the story, creating their own short version with chorus responses and instrumental programme music which they composed themselves to accompany each section of the story, again all ably directed by their own class conductor. Pennoweth immersed themselves in Mussorgsky s Night on Bare Mountain and brought their own version to life with a dancing conductor who led responsive dancers and musicians through their own version of the piece with original music created specially for the movement. All three pieces enjoyed their world premier at the Hubbub Festival at Heartlands. The children all performed brilliantly! Penzance Cluster Alongside the Redruth project Christine helped schools in West Cornwall to prepare for the ever expanding Golowan Festival in Penzance. There were community samba rehearsals in Mousehole involving pupils, teachers, parents, grandparents and friends leading up to the Mazey day parades where the band set the crowds dancing as they paraded through the streets performing Samba Reggae. Meanwhile, Trythall were preparing for their outdoor performance of Penguins Save the World incorporating their Mazey Day model of Shabbard Shiverer. Christine helped pupils here to compose a three part vocal piece which featured in their performance as the Penguins beckoned Shabbard Shiverer to help them save the environment. As well as delivering workshops at the Hub conference Christine Judge will be running a Primary Music Conference on behalf of the CMST on 21 st March 2016 at the Sands Hotel in Newquay. This event will be packed with practical activitiesfor Music Coordinators, teachers and deliverers. More information is available from Cornwall Music Service Trust Office on or you can contact Christine directly [email protected] Monster Music with CMC Monster Music is a project delivered by CMC (Community Music in Cornwall) over the Spring/Summer terms which offered inclusive popular music making to young people who otherwise would not get the opportunity. The most recent project was delivered to 48 young people at Treviglas and Poltair schools and was part funded by the Hub. The weekly sessions offered the targeted young people opportunities on Bass guitar, drums, guitar, keyboard, singing and song writing. In addition to developing musical skills, the sessions aimed to: develop self-esteem, improve confidence and communication skills, improve social skills and friendships, increase engagement with School music provision and develop the skills of other staff members around how to engage hard to reach children and young people

9 Music for Youth update by Tim Boulton From Grass Roots to the Best of British The Music For Youth (MFY) Regional Festival series is the biggest youth music festival in the world, and in 2015 Cornwall Music Education Hub have been pleased to be official partners of MFY, working with the national charity to deliver the largest and most varied Truro Regional Festival so far. In March 2015 over 600 young people performed in 28 groups to a lively audience largely made up of young people and supportive family members. From beginner to pre-professional, infant to university level, groups of just a few musicians to a choir of a hundred plus, the audience witnessed the wealth of music making across Cornwall and beyond. Two experienced MFY Mentors offered informative and encouraging feedback to every group - the atmosphere at the festival was uplifting and inspiring. As well as producing local festivals with a national context, MFY also offers a pathway for selected groups to take part in the National Festival in Birmingham. To the delight of many young people, over a third of the 2015 Truro groups, 10 in total, were invited to participate in the National Festival in July. MFY know how to put on a good show there is no organisation more experienced in presenting young music groups, and Central Birmingham in buzzing during the National Festival. Participants get the opportunity to hear some of the most interesting and inspiring young musicians from across the country as well as performing themselves. MFY celebrates every possible style and genre of music being played by young people across the country, and it s perhaps only at times like these when we can best appreciate the vibrant wealth of music making from Britain s multicultural youth. But young Cornish musicians proved that they know a thing or two about putting on a good performance too and the combination was potent. Five of the Cornish groups proved themselves to be exceptionally able at a national level: Carrick Wind, Cornwall Youth Orchestra, Penzance Youth String Orchestra and Truro Prep School Choir each received special Certificates of Achievement for Performance Practice reserved for the most outstanding performances in each category, and Penzance based folk/jazz group Contours were selected for a prestigious Development Award. There is one more path along which just a few dozen of the most outstanding youth groups from across the UK are invited to travel each year, and the destination is three evenings of Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in November. Anyone who has had the privilege of performing at the Schools Proms knows that the atmosphere is electric, the show is second to none, and the sense of occasion - awesome. To the great credit of Cornish youth music making, groups from the Duchy have been invited to perform in each of the last 5 years. Congratulations to two Cornish groups who have been invited this year; the folk/jazz trio Contours and Cornwall Youth Orchestra whose performance will include a collaboration with junior violinists from Northampton. Truro Regional Festival is the local gateway to the whole MFY season. It is open to any group of two or more people aged 21 and under and it s free to take part. For the first time, Truro Regional Festival 2016 expands to be a two day event on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th March with the 2nd day entirely devoted to Band Fest featuring rock, pop, urban and amplified bands.
