1 S T Q T R, Society for Information Management Delivering Business Value Through Technology President s Message Fellow SIM Members: I N T H I S I S S U E : President s Message Philanthropy New Members Programs 2011 Annual Dues I hope you enjoyed our first Chapter Meeting and Program in 2011 as much as I did. Mike Redding, from Accenture, delivered an excellent presentation called Everything is Elastic in which he outlined seven major trends for IT that Accenture thinks will shape the next five years or so. Of these seven trends, two really stand-out in my mind as games changers for those of us who lead IT. Besides our day-to-day work as IT Leaders, each of us has to identify how our organizations will respond to these trends. Cloud Computing moving into the mainstream. Amazon sets the pace as the low cost leader at $0.10 per server per hour, with no commitment. A smart IT Leader has to ask how long we will be able to afford our own stack (ping/ pipe/power/server, etc.) for non-mission critical applications. Do we all really need our own for development and test systems? Can we overcome the inherent security and liability issues and our own inertia to make change happen? Mobile everywhere. You know the world is changing when two people in the same room (especially teenagers) would rather text each other than talk to each other. Mobile freedom coupled with the emergence of HTML5 should radically change how we design, develop, and deploy applications to desktops, tablets, and mobile devices. Are you positioning your organization to capitalize on these seismic shifts? Is your workforce as productive untethered as in the office? I think SIM creates the most value for you, our members, as we strive to create open dialogue around the topics that are most central and vital to the future of IT. It is our goal to bring compelling and innovative programs to our Meetings and to offer you a forum to share ideas as you formulate go-forward strategies for your organization. On another note, I cannot tell you how much it means to me to see the Chapter respond to help Dennis and Donna Daniel in their time of need. Thankfully, Dennis is becoming healthier each day. I will continue to send updates a few times a week or as I become aware of changes in his situation. Please keep both of them in your thoughts and let them know how much Dennis means to the Chapter. Donna can be reached at Donna.Daniel@Revlon.com. I look forward to a great networking event in March and an intriguing and successful May program. I value your feedback always and can be reached at (919) or Jon.Meyer@FirstCitizens.com.
P A G E 2 Philanthropy Ed Galloway Tackling the Technical Divide.. GET SET FOR ROUND II on APRIL 16 th! We are happy to be working once again with Kramden Institute. Last year, SIM sponsored a Mini Geek-a-Thon! Yes, we were front and center, elbow-to-elbow with Kramden s volunteers, refurbishing, training and delivering PCs to worthy students and their families. For those of you who may not be familiar with this event, the Mini Geek -A-thon is Kramden s signature event during which volunteers work together to refurbish PCs for hardworking students in North Carolina who do not have a home computer. Some forty volunteers from the ranks of our SIM membership, friends and family gave of their time and talent in refurbishing and distributing PCs to over 50 deserving students and their families! MARK YOUR CALENDARS! On April 16 th We will be called upon once again to assist in outfitting worthy students with laptops, software and the necessary training to compete in the classroom! In the coming weeks, stay tuned for more information as to how you can help! Pictured above: SIM members and their families
P A G E 3 Philanthropy (Continued) Ed Galloway SIM-RTP partners with the Black Data Processing Assoc. In just our second year of our BDPA Partnership, we are already making inroads! Listen to Jim Baxley, First Citizens Bank and fellow SIM member, recant his recent experience at the BDPA Triangle Chapter Saturday Technology Academy. "I was instantly impressed: 15 high school students - on a spring Saturday - engaged in real learning, not just about technology, but about leadership, citizenship and stewardship. The program Jim s referring to is SITES Student Information Technology Education and Scholarship program. SITES is designed to introduce African American youth to the Information Technology industry, encourage them to seek higher levels of education, and groom many to join the ranks of our next generation of IT professionals. On May 8th of last year, the SITES program concluded the first of 2 phases of instruction. At the closing ceremony, SIM was again represented by Julie Batchelor from the State Controller s Office. She gave a very inspirational address to SITES participants and representatives from the RTP BDPA Chapter. And more recently another one of our own, Maurice Hagar spent a Saturday morning with SITES students laying out the ins and outs of Project management. Here is Maurice s reflection on his experience: It's much more challenging working with high school students than adults but the session went very well and they were most appreciative. They got lessons in Agile project management and teamwork wrapped around an exercise building paper airplanes. We all had a good time and I think they learned something. I look forward to hearing of their progress in the series of upcoming competitions. As spring approaches, be on the lookout for information on how you can make a difference in the growth of these fine young men and woman! Pictured above: Julie Batchelor, SITES students and Carl Hill, BDPA
P A G E 4 Welcome New Members Senthil Kumar Congratulations to our newest SIM-RTP Members since the last newsletter. Please welcome them at our next meeting. Rich Santoriello- Global Director of Information Technology at Nomacorc LLC Curtis Rupke - IT Leader at Spirit Aero Systems Here are some statistics, status and goals from a Membership perspective. Our current membership roster has 76 members with compliance to the 75/25 split across practitioners/vendors. The chapter is looking to grow membership by 20% by attracting more leaders in the RTP area to provide more value to existing membership. The membership team will be reaching out to our Executive Members to get introductions to prospective SIM-RTP Members as part of the Membership Growth Strategy. Membership team is working closely with the President and Program Chair to bring exciting programs that benefit the members similar to the event we had in January Please feel free to contact me if you have any ideas to increase value derived by our membership and bring peers interested in being part of SIM-RTP. I can be reached at (919) or via at Senthil@pitechsol.com.
P A G E 5 Programs Dennis Daniel January Program Thanks to everyone that attended our January program. We typically start the year with a program on future trends and projections/predictions. With that in mind, we had Mike Redding, Global Managing Director from Accenture technology Labs speak. Mike was a well received speaker at the 2010 Raleigh CIO Forum, and brought SIM-RTP his insightful, informative and thought-provoking presentation entitled "Everything is Elastic - Technology Vision 2011". Here is a link to Mike s presentation: Accenture Presentation March 16th Program Once again Compuware will host SIM-RTP for a night of networking and fun at the March 16th Hurricanes Game! This event will be in private luxury suites with SIM RTP members only. We do a program this way because we wanted a pure networking event where members could have extended casual conversations with other members. Important: Your dues must be current for 2011 to attend this event. Please go to to pay your dues or contact jim@thebaxleys.org to make arrangements for payment. Registration information will follow shortly.
