1 The Viking Chronicles Fall 2015 HOMECOMEING PEP RALLY 2015 by TaKiyah Bogues To kick off our school year, we wanted to get acquainted with many off the new staff members here. To welcome them to our Viking nation we had them complete a survey to get to know them a little better. We asked them 6 questions in this order. What is your favorite color? What college did you attend? What made you come to Northwest? When is your Birthday? What is your favorite food? Lastly, what is your title at Northwest? We had many responses. English 1 teacher Ms. K. Arnold s favorite color is purple. She attended Point University in West Point, Georgia. Her birthday is June 18. Her favorite foods are lasagna, cheese pizza, spicy tuna rolls, seafood, chicken and lemonheads. Social Studies teacher, Mr. P. Warren s favorite color is purple. He attended East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina. He ended up here because he wanted to make difference close to his roots being that he is from Oxford, NC. His birthday is Nov.4 th and he loves seafood. CTE teacher, Mrs. A. Smith favorite color is black. She attended North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. She came to Northwest for various reasons. Assistant Principal Mrs. K. Settle s favorite color is red. She attended North Carolina Central University, in Durham, North Carolina. She ended up here at Northwest on a promotion and wanting to make a difference in students lives. Her birthday July 16 and her favorite food is seafood. Resource Officer Mr. D. Solomon attended Halifax Community College, in Weldon, North Carolina. His favorite color is black and he ended up here at Northwest because he was assigned here as a result of reassignments of student resource officers. His birthday is Jan.2 nd and his favorite food is chicken. Teacher assistant Ms. B. Arrington s favorite color is black. She attended Halifax Community College, in Weldon NC, North Carolina Wesleyan College, in Rocky Mount, NC and AIU online college. She ended up here at Northwest because there was a vacancy. 4 NWHS Sports by Zakiya Fleming & TaKiyah Bogues FOOTBALL This year s football season was nothing less than a hard working and enjoyable season. Despite the season they never gave up and they came to practice every day and gave it their all. At the end of the day they were more than classmates, they were family. The football team wants to thank all of their supporters and wish the best to the seniors on the team who will be taking on a new chapter in their life. CHEERLEADING This year football season cheerleading team has done a great job on their many efforts. During the summer they held practice and tryouts from 8a.m 12p.m. Their team held about 14 cheerleaders and for the first time they had a male cheerleader. Although their practice times varied that still didn t stop them from working hard to get better and better each day to perfect their selves even more throughout their season. Their captains this year included Heaven Richardson (Head Captain), Tatyana Watson and Destiny Broadnax (Co-captains). To the seniors of the cheerleading team, they wish them the best of luck on their transition to college and they will forever be a Viking Jewel.
5 CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team (Christopher Alston, Arthur Harris, Jessica Norman, Jiona Mills, and Aleah Alston) have had a victorious season so far. Over the course of the season each runner has exceeded their personal best time and is continuing to improve individually and collectively as a team. The conference cross country meet was held on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Southeast Halifax High School. Christopher Alston placed 8 th and Arthur Harris came in 10 th place, making them both All- Conference runners. All members of the team qualified for the Regional s meet which was held on Saturday, October 31, 2015 in Jacksonville, NC at Camp Lejune High School. The cross country team has been practiced hard with determination to perform well at Regional s and to hopefully qualify for State s. COLLEGE CORNER VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team for this year felt this was a better season for them. Their season started out a little slow but once they got into it they gave it their all and played as a team. They said playing double games was a lot but they made it through to the end. They felt their biggest competition was against Louisburg and Granville Central. To the seniors on the team they want to say that they love them and hope they succeed in the future Reminders & Upcoming Events Basket Ball Schedule School Breaks 11/20 Warren County Home Nov Thanksgiving Break 11/24 Northampton County Away Dec Early Release Day 12/1 Roanoke Rapids Home Dec. 21 & 22 - Optional Workday 12/4 Warren County Away Dec. 23-Jan. 1 - Christmas/New Year s 12/9 Northampton County Home Break 12/11 North Edgecombe Home Jan 4- First Day Back For Students 12/15 Southeast Halifax Home Jan 18 MLK Holiday 12/18 Kipp Home Jan 19 & 20- Mandatory Workday **Christmas Tournament** 12/22-23 At Roanoke Rapids (Junior Varsity & Girls ONLY) 12/26-29 At Northampton County (Varsity ONLY) It is with great Viking Pride that Ms. Vicki Wiggins serves as the College Adviser at Northwest Halifax High School. The Carolina College Advising Corps has charged her with the task of creating a college-going culture at Northwest. They have had many college admissions counselors from around the state to visit, speak with and also accept our students into their institutions. Using a best match-best fit model, students are enrolling in colleges around the state of North Carolina and beyond. During College Application Week this year, 60 percent of our seniors applied to at least 1 college or university. Whether they attend a 2 or 4-year institution, enter the military or workforce; ensuring students have a plan and are prepared for life after graduation is her top priority. Working with the students and staff of Northwest Halifax High School is truly a pleasure for her.
