3 available What is OM4? OM4 is a laser-optimised, high-bandwidth 50µm multimode cabled fibre, defined in IEC (ISO/IEC 11801), EN and TIA/EIA 492AAAD. OM4 provides higher bandwidth compared to OM3 when measured at 850nm. OM3 OM4 850nm High Performance EMB (MHz.km) nm Legacy Performance OFL (MHz.km) nm Legacy Performance OFL (MHz.km) What is the benefit of OM4? Higher bandwidth allows longer channel lengths for high speed applications and provides more head room for richer network design. Typical implementation of OM4 is for requirements between 300m and 550m at 10Gb/s or between 100m and 125m at 40Gb/s or 100Gb/s. 4 4 An Introduction to OM4 Cable and Connectivity Solutions OM4 50/125 Multimode Optical Fibre Description OM4 is the latest high modal bandwidth high performance 50/125 Graded Index Multimode (GIMM) cabled fibre specification. OM4 fibre enables extended range performance over high bit rate links such as 8 Gigabit Fibre Channel and 10 Gigabit Ethernet compared to existing fibre types. FibreFab offer a wide range of OM4 compliant cable assembly products in both standard OM4 and Reduced Bend Sensitivity (RBS) OM4 variants. OM4 cabled fibre fully meets the following international specifications: OM4 is the preferred cabled fibre type for high performance data centre and enterprise networks using or planning to use high bandwidth protocols for which channel spans may exceed 150m. For example, ISO/IEC supports the maximum channel span for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-SR, 10 Gb/s at 850nm) over standard 50/125 optical fibres as shown below: ITU-T G IEC type A1a.3 ISO/IEC A2 OM4 TIA/EIA-492AAAD Telcordia GR-20-CORE OM1 OM2 OM3 OM4 33m 82m 300m 550m Let s take a closer look at 10G Ethernet. The basic power budget is about 6dB but this is degraded for longer link lengths due to signal distortions such as modal dispersion. These distortions mean that the detector requires more power to operate. The way this extra power is accommodated in channel planning is through a power penalty. In our example, the power penalty increases from 0 to almost 5dB for the maximum channel length. The penalty is not linear and increases dramatically as the maximum length is reached. In designing the channel, a key factor is the power budget available for connection loss. This is the total power budget inclusive of penalties reduced by the cable attenuation, leaving that portion of the power budget that may be used to cover connector insertion loss, splice loss, bend loss and contamination. The table opposite shows that at 300m with OM3 the loss available for all connections is only 1.79dB. On the other end OM4 allows up to 4.55dB, an increase of 2.76dB. A typical data centre channel may have eight connections. For OM3, the average loss must be less than 0.24dB, including all factors which means premium terminations must be used and there is no margin for installation faults, pinched cables or any other channel problem With a budget of 0.57dB per connection, OM4 allows considerable headroom to support a stable network. 5 5 Link Loss Budgets for 10G Ethernet over OM3 or OM4 Links* (10G Base-SR, 850nm, laser launch, 2.7dB per km cable attenuation) OM3 OM4 Standards Compliance ITU-T G IEC type A1a.3 ISO/IEC nd Edition OM4 TIA/EIA-492AAAD Telcordia GR-20-CORE Link Length (metres) Total Loss Budget (db) Max Connection Loss (db) Cable Loss (db) OM3 OM4 OM3 OM *Indicative values, call for guidance Observations Up to 150m, there is no meaningful difference between OM3 and OM4 and the power budget is still very reasonable At 200m and longer, the benefit of OM4 is substantial and may allow networks with more flexibility points, use of standard grade terminations or tolerance of loss due to contamination or bends Above 250m, OM3 links have very low connection loss available and must be designed with very careful attention to function. Premium grade terminations must be used and installation practices are critical The same comments apply to OM4, but for longer lengths approaching the maximum span of 550m In applications that have been, or may be connected in spans approaching the fibre type limit, premium terminations and reduced bend sensitivity fibre may provide real benefits,om3 connectivity for OM3 links and OM4 connectivity for OM4 links Recommendations Use OM4 as a future proof solution for data centre and other high performance network applications where total channel lengths may now or in future exceed 200m Take maximum benefit from using OM4 by using Premium patchcords that are made with high concentricity ferrules delivering less insertion loss than standard patchcords. MTP products should be fitted with Elite grade connectors Premium patchcords are tested using the latest Encircled Flux compliant methods Fit OM4 assembly products with colour differentiated connectors (e.g. Erika Violet) to visually display fibre type. Also use colour differentiated LC adaptors to indicate OM4 fibre used in fixed links. Most data centre connections will be LC for single fibres and MTP for multiple fibres Use only patchcords that are factory tested using encircled flux compliant methods. Use only encircled flux compliant launch sources for installation testing Use microcable to reduce any change of network outage loss during installation as well as in use VISIT US ONLINE NOW

10 10 OM4 Uniboot Patchcords As the networking environment of today becomes increasingly dependent on high speed and high density solutions, effective cable management is a real issue. The key concern is how to manage more cable in less space. The FibreFab Uniboot fibre patchcord reduces cable management space compared to standard patchcords. The body of the connector also prevents users from altering the polarity of the patchcord. The patchcord utilises a special round duplex cable that allows duplex transmission within a single 3mm cable. As a result of these unique features the FibreFab Uniboot patchcord offers improved airflow and visibility of equipment within a high density network environment. The FibreFab Uniboot patchcord is available in a wide variety of cable styles. 30 30 OM4 Ultra High Density 1U Modular Patch Panel 120 fibres Description FibreFab offers an innovative, high density patch panel. Designed to accommodate up to 120 connections within a 1U panel. These are split between 5 individual modules with up to 24 fibres within each. Each module accepts incoming fibre from either MTP trunk cables or via pre-terminated assemblies. Pre-terminated cables are available as either ruggedised breakout cable or distribution cable. Another alternative for cable entry is the patented FibreFab FirstLight Prime breakout, capable of being pulled over long distances and connecting directly to equipment. Incoming cable can also be supplied un-terminated for splicing within a standard patch panel. Modules can enter the panel from the front or the rear. Each is supplied with a separate labelling card for ease of channel identification. Cable entry is managed via a retrofit management bar allowing entry from either the left or the right hand side. Exiting patchcords are managed by a retrofit bracket allowing cables to be routed in any direction. Also available is a 3U system incorporating all of the above but with the addition of a removable door allowing complete access to all relevant components. Second to this FibreFab is pleased to offer a 0U solution designed to accommodate sufficient MTP connectivity to support an individual blade per module. This is managed via a 96 fibre trunk cable directly terminated to 8 MTP connectors within the module and the choice of MTP or discrete connectors at the opposing end. Module can pass through the panel in both directions Features Modular Connection System High Density- scaling up to 120 discrete connectors and up to 720 fibres within MTP interface Up to 24 discrete or 120 (MTP ) fibres connections a single module Cable entry via either MTP connection or pre-terminated assemblies Pre-loaded in the factory to guarantee performance Can be supplied with pre-terminated pigtails for splicing on the opposite end Can be supplied with a module at one end and ruggedised tails for direct connection to equipment at the opposing end Can be supplied with a module at one end and 900µm tails for connection within a standard patch panel at the opposing end 5 individual modules per panel Module entry from front or rear Rear cable management Retrofit patchcord exit management Separate labelling cards ROHS, REACH SvHC and UL rated Fits standard 19 or ETSI rack Applications Data centres, premise installations, telecommunication networks Ethernet, Fibre Channel, ATM, LAN, MAN and WAN Data communication networks Indoor applications FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL +44 (0)
