1 10 Cables The cables referred to below are provided with standard single- and multimode fibers. Other commercially available fibers can be provided on request. The bare fibers are colored in all cases with UV-cured acrylate. The process employed is state of the art and guarantees a uniform, smooth surface. The color scheme for the fibers in the cable complies with the Telcordia (formerly Bellcore) specification. Equipotential bonding and lightning protection measures are not required because all the cables employed are free of metal. Universal Cables A link failure in a modern FO network can involve considerable costs for the operator. The cables must therefore meet stringent mechanical requirements and be able to withstand environmental effects such as frost and humidity. Accordingly, our FutureLink direct burial, duct and universal cables have been designed to be particularly rugged and resilient. For campus cabling applications there are MPC (Multi-Purpose Cables = in- and outdoor cables) available. MPC feature not only the outdoor characteristics (e.g. enhanced rodent protection, water blocking and UV resistance) but also the LS0H characteristics of the use FRNC material required for deployment in buildings. The cable sheaths are colored black. We provide two design variants: Minibundle cables: Cables with multifiber buffer tubes stranded around a central non-metallic (dielectric) strength member. Central tube cables: Cables with a central multifiber buffer tube and strength members partially integrated in the sheath. If a bundle is to contain more than the maximum of twelve fibers that can be distinguished visually, we group the fibers in twelves with a colored binder.

2 F u t u r e L i n k M o d u l a r - S y s t e m C a t a l o g I s s u e This avoids an additional stress being imposed on the individual optical fiber by the ring marking which would otherwise have to be used to identify more than 12 individual fibers. If, for instance, water enters the cable through damage to the sheath, a special filling prevents the water from migrating inside the cable. This is achieved by swellable (dry) water blocking elements. The advantage of these so-called dry cables is their enhanced installation handling and the environmental protection. Indoor Cables The cables used for the building backbone (riser) and horizontal subsystems are non-corrosive (to IEC ), low-smoke (to IEC 61034) and flame-retardant indoor cables (tested to IEC or 3 and DIN VDE 0472, part 804, test type C). The color of the cable sheaths is, unless stated otherwise, yellow for single-mode and orange for multimode fiber cables. Cables With the new tight buffer coating TB3 our indoor FO cabling is even more installation-friendly, zero halogen and flame retardant. In addition, it has the following advantages: installation-friendly as no filling compound, very easy to strip, long stripping lengths of about 150 mm, rapid, direct field connectorization, direct assembly of the tight buffer, flame retardant to IEC non-corrosive (halogen free). There are multifiber indoor, breakout and patch cables. Multifiber indoor cables consist of stranded tight buffers served with non-metallic strength members. Breakout cables comprise tight-buffered single-fiber cables (tight buffers each in own sheath) stranded together with a central tensile strength member under an additional shared sheath.

3 12 By virtue of their similarities, multifiber indoor cables are often also called mini-breakout or MIC cables. Simplex and duplex cords are singlefiber or Zipcord cables with tight buffers. All FutureLink indoor FO cables are metal-free and hence EMC immune require no grounding require no lightning protection require no equipotential bonding. Pre-assembled Multifiber Cables, Pigtails and Patch Cords To enable FO cables to be joined and separated again rapidly without damage, they are terminated with connectors. In addition to pigtails and patch cords, Corning also supply multifiber cables in factory pre-assembled form such as MPC, MIC (Multifiber Indoor Cable) and breakout cables. The connectors available include not only the well-known SC and ST types but also the small form factor MT-RJ connectors that terminate two fibers simultaneously. For these connectors there are two-fiber cables available with geometry optimally configured for the MT-RJ connector (MiniMIC). For making the transition from MT-RJ to SC and ST single-fiber connectors there are suitable MiniZip cables available. Pre-assembled cables provide the possibility of implementing a complete plug & play solution. When such a solution is adopted with accurate dimensioning and suitable cable routing, it is possible to install even large cabling systems rapidly. Another advantage is that fusion splicing is not necessary. The plug & play technique is also prefered in clean envirement applications.
