1 Bac Pro Transport Management (Exploitation des Transports) Study Trip to Plymouth (GB) October 2009 Introduction The lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe, England From 21 st October to 23 rd October this year, two classes of Bac Pro Transport from the Lycée des Métiers went for a three-day study trip to Plymouth. The objective was to discover diverse transport and logistics companies. There were a total of 35 students and three teachers. This trip cost each student 30. We also received funding from the AFT. The group traveled by coach, ferry and public transport. We also walked a lot!! Day One : The Programme On the first day we visited the Scarmor complex in Landerneau with a logistics manager. Scarmor is the distribution centre for the E Leclerc supermarkets in Brittany. We traveled to Scarmor by coach. In this photo, the group is in the Scarmor conference centre. We listened to the logistics manager describe the activities of the Leclerc group as well as the Landerneau site.

2 After the conference, we visited the huge warehouses where there was a large choice of foodstuffs. It was very impressive. A little break at the Roscoff Ferry Terminal while waiting to board the ferry. Here we are listening to a talk by one of the Brittany Ferries stewards about the company s activities.

3 In this photo, we can see Mme Daniel (Transport teacher) and M. Gestin (Management teacher). They are on the footbridge boarding the ferry, the MV Armorique. Before boarding, all passengers had to present their ID cards and their boarding cards. To go to Plymouth from Roscoff, we traveled on the MV ARmorique, a new ferry. It is a beautiful ship. We boarded at 3pm and arrived in Plymouth at 9pm English time. The crossing lasted 6 hours with difficult weather conditions a force seven wind! In this photo we can see the group with a hostess in the Reclining Seat Lounge. The hostess explained the programme of visits during the crossing and the security instructions.

4 A heavy goods vehicle boarding the ferry in Roscoff. We visited the bridge with the hostess. It was very interesting. We were able to see the navigation instruments. With the bad weather conditions, the ferry moved a lot! We visited the store rooms of the ship with the stock controller. The store rooms are 5 metres under sea level! We appreciated this visit although it was very cold.

5 Our arrival in Plymouth: we can see the RORO principal in operation ( Roll On, Roll Off ) Day Two When we arrived in Plymouth, we went to the Kynance House Hotel, a very typical English hotel. We were warmly welcomed and the bedrooms were nice and comfortable. Sharing a room The English food for breakfast was very good. The bacon and eggs were delicious!

6 We are waiting at a bus stop in the centre of Plymouth to take a bus to visit Armoric Freight, a transport company. The crossing of Plymouth city centre. One of the many bus stops. We visited Armoric Freight, a transport company which works with France. The company is situated in Plympton, near Plymouth. Mr Marc Payne, the owner and manager of the company, described it s history and operations. We all appreciated this visit. Plymouth is quite a big city with a lot of shops and fast food restaurants. Some students tried a typical fish and chips in a pub. It was good.

7 We had a conference at Brittany Ferries in Plymouth with the Freight Manager, Mr Steve Lawrie, and the Passenger Reservations Manager. We visited the freight offices and the customer services department. We liked this visit because it was very interesting. We returned to the ship at 11pm for a night crossing back to Roscoff. We saw a film about the company s activities. The sea was calm but sleeping on reclining seats was difficult. A cabin would have been more comfortable!! We arrived in Roscoff at 7am French time.

8 Day Three As part of our study of Brittany Ferries, we saw a Powerpoint display about the company and a conference about the logistics centre in Roscoff which supplies the ships with food and goods and for the restaurants and shops on board the ferries.

9 Conclusions Plymouth City Centre Even if the study trip to Plymouth was very short just three days the visits to Scarmor, the Brittany Ferries conferences and visits and the meeting with the manager of Armoric Freight were very interesting. We found that all the people we met were very friendly and we discovered a lot of things about Britain : the food, driving on the right and using pounds ( ) instead of Euros. All in all, we loved our short stay in Plymouth and we want to thank the teachers and the companies for organising it.
