With over 20 years of experience in ELICOS as both a teacher and Academic Manager, I have come to know about the expectations and needs of international students learning English in Australia. 5 General English Levels Every student will sit a formal assessment every 4 weeks to determine if they can move up to the next level. These assessments cover reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar skills. ELEMENTARY At the Elementary level you will learn the basics of grammar such as adjectives, verbs and prepositions and the simple tenses. You will learn the vocabulary needed to have a conversation in common everyday situations such as shopping, mealtimes, catching public transport and using polite requests. Introducing and talking about yourself as well as being able to ask someone simple questions is what you will be able to do confidently when you complete this level. PRE-INTERMEDIATE At the Pre-Intermediate level you will continue to learn the basics of grammar such as adverbs and phrasal verbs and more tenses. You will learn the vocabulary needed to have a conversation in situations such as talking about interests, daily routines and types of jobs. You will be able to talk about events in the past and the future with more confidence. INTERMEDIATE At the Intermediate level you will learn advanced grammatical structures such as compound nouns, idioms and the perfect tenses. You will learn vocabulary for job seeking, giving an opinion about different topics and be more confident to hold a conversation with native speakers. You will also learn to give more detailed descriptions and recounts of a story. UPPER INTERMEDIATE At the Upper Intermediate level you will learn the very advanced grammatical structures to write a formal job application, a letter of complaint or a newspaper article. You will also be able to express your ideas in a variety of situations and on a wide range of topics. Reading and writing different text types are developed at this level. 5

6 English Program Our English courses have been accredited by NEAS Australia. English (ELICOS) Course English for General Purposes CRICOS F The program helps you to develop confidence in English communication by practicing the skills you need to communicate accurately and fluently according to situations, aims and participants. These skills include speaking, listening, reading, writing and language usage. Different themes and topics are presented in weekly units and students also have the opportunity to develop computer skills. Excursions and social activities are also regularly arranged for students. Course Length: 4-48 weeks Course Start Dates: Every Monday (except public holidays) Orientation: Students will do a placement test and have an interview with the Academic Manager and then be placed in a class matching their level of English from Elementary to Upper Intermediate. Entry Requirements: Elementary or higher (Bridge English College does not accept Beginner Students). Students must be able to read and write the English alphabet and be able to conduct a very basic converstion. 7 Specialised English Classes The opportunities at Bridge English College are as diverse as the students themselves. Take a look at the selection of Specialised English Classes we have on offer. English (Intermediate Upper Intermediate) The language of business includes making a complaint, a proposal or ananalysis. Learn how to write a formal memo and . Learn vocabulary to deal with business correspondence and meetings. ob Seeking Skills (Intermediate Upper Intermediate) Learn to write an application and a CV. Practise interview techniques and find out where and how you can look for a job. IELTS Preparation (Intermediate Upper Intermediate) Students learn the skills required to study and understand academic English and feel confident in approaching different sections of the IELTS exam. Each class will focus on a different section of the IELTS exam. Pronunciation Practice (Elementary Upper Intermediate) Students always worry about their pronunciation and how their own accent affects being understood when speaking English. This class will work on solving that problem by providing techniques to improve pronunciation. Informal/Australian Slang (Pre-Intermediate Upper Intermediate) Learn common vocabulary and expressions to have a conversation with native speakers in informal situations. Students also learn more about the Aussie culture and way of life. Drama (Elementary Upper Intermediate) Learning English through drama is so much fun. Students will be able to create their own scenes and scripts and feel more confident when speaking in different situations. *The Specialised English Classes shown above are a guide and only certain classes are available at any one time. 7

8 TOEFL Test Centre Bridge College is an approved ETS Certified Test Administration Site. TOEFL TEST CENTRE The TOEFL test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world as it is conducted in over 130 countires. The TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language) test assesses a student's ability to use and understand English at a tertiary level. It also examines how well a student can function when performing academic tasks. The average English skill level ranges between Intermediate and Advanced. If one of the following applies to you, then the TOEFL test may be just what you are looking for: Students planning to study at a higher education institution. English-language learning program admissions and exits English-language learners who want to evaluate their progress Students and workers applying for visas The test is conducted at our premises on Saturdays and exam dates can be located on our website. TOEFL EXAM PREPARATION CLASSES In addition to our TOEFL test centre, we also offer an exam preparation class for students who wish to sit the exam or perhaps just develop their language skills at a level which prepares them better for further tertiary study. 12 BBC Student Club BBC Student Club is run by the students for the students. The student volunteers help other students find jobs, places to stay as well as offering first hand practical advice and other useful information that students can benefit from. Fun Activities Student Club also organises official fun activities for BBC, like the famous Sydney City2Surf fun run, Thredbo Snow Trip, Surf Camp and International Culture Day. ob & House Finder Is a free service provided by BBC to help students find jobs & accomodation. 13 How to Enrol Enrolling is a four step process. STEP 1 SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION Please apply through our website Click on the ENROL NOW button on the home page Fill in all required fields Upload your documents - depending whether you are in Australia or overseas, you will need to upload the following documents along with your application: Applying in Australia: Copy of Passport Copy of Visa Status and expiry date Academic transcript from previous College Proof of English and time studied Release Letter (if applicable) Applying from Overseas: Proof of English and time studied Copy of Passport STEP 2 OFFER LETTER and WRITTEN AGREEMENT Once we have received your application: 1. You will receive an ID and a password in your , which will allow you to Log-on to our system at any time and follow up the progress of your application (go to click on Log In ) 2. We will send you an Offer Letter via within the next 48 hours. Please note that an Offer Letter does not secure a place in the College, until payment has been processed and CoE issued. Should any information or documents be missing, we will send you a Conditional Offer Letter. A full Offer Letter will be issued when all outstanding information and documents are provided. 3. Please read the Offer Letter carefully and check that all details are correct. If you are happy with all details, please log on to our website to click on our student offer letter to Accept the Offer Letter. 4. Once you have accepted the Offer Letter you will immediately receive a Written Agreement in your . Please read the Written Agreement and accept by clicking on I ACCEPT. STEP 3 PAYMENT 1. Once you have accepted the Offer Letter and Written Agreement please make a payment to our bank account. You will find our bank details and the right amount payable in the offer letter. 2. After you have made your payment, please scan and upload a receipt of your payment/remittance advice to your personal Document Library on the upload payment documents tab on our website. STEP 4 CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) Your CoE will be issued within the next hours from receiving your payment confirmation. The CoE will be uploaded to your personal Document Library on our website. You can access and download it any time. The Written agreement is a legal contract which must be accepted by the student. Students are then aware of our terms and conditions. All Colleges are required by law to keep these agreements on file. (National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2007 standard 3 and 4). 13
