If you ordered a VEBAR stand-alone monitoring system without a corresponding VEBAR Gateway, you should have received a white (long range) or green (short range) USB rf communication dongle. With this dongle your computer can communicate directly with your stand-alone VEBAR sensors. If you do not have one of these USB dongles you can skip the next paragraph. Plug in your VEBAR USB communication dongle in an open USB port of your computer. The driver should be automatically installed by windows update. If you experience that the driver is not automatically installed by Windows update, you can install the driver yourself. Go to: download USB driver CDM20824 to install the USB dongle s driver. Click RUN to install. - You can now install the Battery Monitoring Software (Battman). If Battman is already installed, make sure you have the correct License File with the corresponding USERNAME and PASSWORD to activate the program. - Program the correct PAN ID. (see page. Go to Page 18) 2. Installing the Battery Monitoring Software. When you order your battery monitoring system, you can choose to install it yourself or have the system installed by your supplier. However, if you need assistance please call your local supplier or contact our service department. Contact information can be found on the last page of this guide. This software version can be installed on computers with Microsoft Operating Systems XP, VISTA or Windows7. Your VEBAR battery monitoring software comes in one zipped file, and looks like this: 5
-Create a new folder named BATTERYMONITORING and copy/paste the file you received to this folder. -Select the file you downloaded or received from your supplier, right-click and select EXTRACT ALL 6
-Save all extracted files in the same folder. 7
-Extracted files: - Double-click on BATTSETUP 8
-Click NEXT - Read the License Agreement. You will see the English version when you scroll down. If you agree, select I AGREE and click on NEXT 9
- Click NEXT - Click NEXT 10
- Please wait a couple of minutes. - If your access control security program asks if you trust this program, you should answer YES for Battman Battery Monitoring Software to install. If you answer NO the software will not be installed. You will have to repeat the installation process. - Read the text and click NEXT - The software has been installed. Click on CLOSE 11
3. Open your Software for Technician - Go to your desktop. You should see the VEBAR BATTMAN logo. - Double-click on the BATTMAN logo. - The opening screen gives you the possibility to select the LICENSE. A LICENSE is an encrypted file that is needed for the software to work. 12
- Click on GETLicense and point to your PROGRAM FILES (x86) (located on your c: drive) - Double-click on PROGRAM FILES (x86) and look for the VEBAR folder. 13
- Double-Click on VEBAR folder - Double Click on the folder BATTMAN BATTERY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE - Double-click on CUSTOMER 14
- Choose YOUR NAME. You must have received an , informing you of YOUR NAME and the corresponding PASSWORD. The two access levels (indicated with (2) or (3)) correspond with a different set of functionalities. Level 2 can make changes to most important settings. Level 3 cannot make changes to settings. - Enter your PASSWORD in the password field and click OK. If you activate REMEMBER ME and AUTO-LOGIN the software will startup automatically, next time you open the program. If your computer is not protected with a password, this is NOT a good idea! Remember that you are responsible for any changes in the programming of VEBAR battery sensors - originating from this specific software license. It is always traceable in the battery sensor unit s memory who modified settings! We suggest that your computer shall always be connected to the internet. You will not be able to connect to battery sites online if you are not connected. (WAN) In order to be able to connect to your locally connected VEBAR Gateway, you should be connected to your Local Area Network (LAN). Please note that only 1 VEBAR Gateway is accessible via LAN! In order to connect with your stand-alone VEBAR Battery Sensors you should connect the VEBAR USB communication Dongle. Make sure windows installs the correct drivers for this USB dongle use windows update to download the latest drivers. 15
3.1 BASIC SCREEN The basic screen for the Technician application looks like this: 16
Go to CONFIGURE tab, choose OPTIONS and type in the PAN ID you received. You received this pan ID together with your License file-password(s). Once you enter the correct PAN ID, the batterysensor can communicate with the computer. 17
Basic screen: Module-link status See lower left corner: This icon indicates the state of connection with the wireless battery sensors regardless of how the technician s pc is connected to the battery sensors. (COM, LAN, WAN) If the battery sensors of the selected site are accessible, the icon is red. (if there are no sensors in the battery charging room, you will not see any sensor.) If there is no connection with the selected site, the icon will turn grey. COM: only visible if you have inserted the VEBAR USB communication dongle. Choose this option if you want to communicate with VEBAR battery/charger sensor(s) AND there is no VEBAR gateway in use at this site. If there is a VEBAR gateway in the charging room, never use this COM port nor the VEBAR USB communication dongle. LAN: Choose this option to connect with the VEBAR battery/charger sensor(s) through the available VEBAR gateway, connected to the Local Network. If more than one VEBAR gateway is connected to the local network choose option WAN. WAN: Choose this option to connect with the VEBAR battery/charger sensor(s) through the internet. (Wide Area Network). You will be able to choose the gateway you want to connect to from a list of available VEBAR gateways which are internet connected. 18
3.1.2 Select your connection. (drop down list above the icon ) This box lets you choose a connection. The following options are available: COMxx All VEBAR USB dongles are visualised by COM ports (serial) created by the system. If your system does not recognise the USB dongle you should install the USB drivers. Check windows update. REMARK 1: VEBAR USB dongles on LAN are not shown. REMARK 2: Do not start 2 networks (Gateways) with the same PAN ID. This will lead to failing communications and unwanted results. If you want to connect to an existing VEBAR GATEWAY, you should connect your Technician PC to the Gateway by using a LAN or WAN connection. In this case you can not use your USB communication dongle, since the battery sensors can only communicate with one wireless coordinator. This coordinator is the Gateway in the charging room LAN You can start a LAN connection If you can physically connect your Technician PC to the Gateway with a crossed ethernet cable OR connect with your wifi adapter to the local wireless network if a Gateway is attached to this LAN. Your Technician PC will automatically connect with the VEBAR Gateway and will log on. You will have the same funcionality as if you connected to the battery sensor through the COMxx port. This time the communication runs through the Site Gateway. REMARK: On LAN you can only connect to 1 Gateway. Never install 2 Gateways on 1 network. REMARK: If your Technician Pc Software cannot connect to a Gateway in the network it may be necessary to check the firewall settings. 19
WAN You can make a connection with a VEBAR Gateway through an ethernet connection WAN login dialog If there are registered Battery Site Gateways, your computer is connected to the internet, and you have access rights to company battery sites, you will see a screen similar to that shown: 4. Your Battman software has connected to the internet, and shows you all companies you can connect to. 5. Click on the name of the company you are allowed to connect to. In this example you only have access to the site THEBATTERYMONITOR, LLC 20
6. You see that this company has 3 different sites. Only one site is online. Click on WAREHOUSE and click on CONNECT. (or double-click on WAREHOUSE) 7. This screen shows you in real time the status at the company s battery charging room. Every row represents a wireless battery monitor. (Connected to a battery, a charger or a wireless display (blue rows)). A red colored row indicates that the corresponding battery has a problem. A list of problems alarms- will be created if you click on a row and then click on the ALARMS tab. You can sort the rows by clicking on the tabs: SENSOR NAME GROUP ID Connection - functionality With any communication type (COM, LAN or WAN) the Technician Application will attempt to make the chosen link. If user action is required, this is shown on the screen Connected with a Battery Site Gateway. In the top title of the program the FULL NAME of the connected Site Gateway is shown, so you always see which site you are connected to Logging Tab. This Tab gives info on the selected row (battery sensor). This info is renewed every 10 seconds. 21
3.1.6 Module-overview Every row represents a battery sensor within reach of the Technician s PC or within reach of the connected Site Gateway through LAN or WAN. A complete status for every sensor module is available. With the context menu a number of actions can be executed for every sensor unit. This functionality is identical for all communication modes. (COMM, LAN, WAN) The sensor units are represented in different colors, depending on their status or functionality. Standard battery or charger sensor unit =>white Wireless display unit => blue Wireless ambient Temperature sensor with range extender => light green Sensor unit from a different owner than you: => grey Sensor unit in Batter- or Charger-Alarm => red Selected sensor unit => color depends on the windows color settings. ( standard selected color) 22
3.2 Context menu Click-Right on any battery sensor unit to open the Context menu. All these different items from the context menu will open a separate dialogue. If the settings can be changed you will see a PROGRAM button. The changeable fields will be programmed directly into the battery sensor sensor unit. Successful reprogramming will be indicated by a green field. During busy network traffic when interrogating distant sensors or during bad cellular connection an ERROR message indicates slow communication. You can try to REFRESH or wait a couple of minutes for the connection to become better. If you continue to have communication problems, you should check the network or cellular connection. Repositioning of the antenna can sometimes improve the connection. 23
3.3 Programming a battery sensor. The First time you use a battery sensor, you should program all settings. A sensor module that needs to be programmed for the first time will show the battery state: CHECK ALL SETTINGS. (See above screenshot) Once you have programmed ALL settings with an acceptable value, the battery sensor unit will show: STARTUP WAITING FOR DISCHARGE. Please go over all menus from the CONTEXT menu. If you have questions please contact your vendor or contact the VEBAR service center at
3.4 At the top of the BASIC SCREEN Following menus are available: File -> Exit : use this to leave the application. Language -> choose your Language. Configure -> options Configure -> hostname Site lists -> Alarm list Site Lists -> Detected modules list Site Lists -> Fifo list Language Choose your language. If your language is not installed please contact our service center Configure->hostname This menu is used to enter the hostname of the communication server. DO NOT CHANGE THE SETTINGS. If you accidently changed the hostname, please contact your Vebar Service center Configure->options In this menu you can choose your language, PAN ID (you received this info together with your password and login name) and other display preferences. 25
Changing the PAN ID only has effect if you communicate with the sensor units through the COM port. (Vebar USB communication dongle) If you do not program the correct PAN ID you cannot connect to the battery sensors Site lists -> Alarm list / Detected modules list / First Available Battery List To get an overview of the alarms, or determine which batteries are available for use, you can choose the list in the SITE LIST menu. 26
