1 SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE-REESE VOCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM COURSE SYLLABUS Prerequisite Class COURSE TITLE: VNSG 1222 Vocational Nursing Concepts SEMESTER/YEAR: Fall 2013 INSTRUCTOR: Sue Matthews, RN, B.S. Ed OFFICE: Room 503 OFFICE HOURS: Are posted on the office door. OFFICE PHONE: (best method of communication) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to the nursing profession, its responsibilities and its legal and ethical issues in nursing practice. This course will also deal with concepts related to the physical, emotional, and psychosocial self-care of the learner/professional. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will discuss the personal adjustments essential to the development of the vocational nurse; identify the role of the licensed vocational nurse; and discuss the legal and ethical responsibilities in vocational nursing practice. GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION: I. Tet: Hill and Howlett (7 th Edition), Success in Practical/Vocational Nursing, References: Becker & Fendler, Vocational and Personal Adjustments in Practical Nursing, Mosby Ellis & Nowlis, Nursing: A Human Needs Approach, J. B. Lippincott Co. SCANS: This course meets the SCANs (Secretaries Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills): (C-5, C-6, C-7, C-8, F-1, F-2, F-5, F-6, F-8, F-9, F-12, F-16) 1
2 II. Attendance Policy Roll is taken for each class. A student who is not present when roll is taken will be considered absent. A student who fails to sign in on the attendance form is absent. Students are not allowed to disrupt the class for tardiness. A student may come into the classroom following a break, but the absence remains on the record. A student who does not stay for the entire class period is absent. Because of time limitations, any absence has an adverse affect on the student s academic career. The student can only miss two class periods, on the 3 nd absence the student will be administratively dropped from the course. Research has determined that good attendance and participation are essential to being successful. III. Eamination Policy In order to pass this course the student must: Have a course average of 75 or better Have no more than 2 absence in this course A. Eams may be essay, fill-in-the blank, multiple choice, matching and/or true false.. B. NO eams will be given prior to the originally scheduled eam. C. Missed Eams / makeup work: 1. Students are epected to take all eaminations for each nursing course. There are NO makeup eams for this course. The Final Eam is comprehensive (meaning that it covers the entire course). The Final Eam grade will be the grade for the first missed eam only. Should any additional eams be missed, a grade of 0 will be recorded. 2. A make-up Final Eam may only be done under documented etenuating circumstances, (eamples: you are admitted to the hospital; death of husband, wife, or child). A grade of I will be given to the student who cannot take the Final at the scheduled time. Students who receive an I for missing the Final will have to wait to start the net appropriate semester as a readmission student. 3. No eams will be given prior to the originally scheduled eam. 4. ATTENTION : All cell phones must be turned off during class. (if your phone goes off during lecture, it may become my property until class is over.) Should a cell phone go off during an eam, that student s test will end right there and a grade of 50 will be recorded for this test grade even if you are on the last question. You and your phone will then leave the classroom. There is no makeup for this grade. 2
3 5. For Test Security, hats, caps, backpacks, purses or jackets may not be worn during an eam. E. Final Eam The Final Eam is a comprehensive paper-pencil eam over the entire course and meets all the course objectives. For review, the student is referred to the Course Objectives. A make-up Final Eam may only be done under documented etenuating circumstances and will follow the same format as all make-up eams. Should the student be unable to take the Make-up Final Eam before the start of the net semester, then that student will receive a grade of I (incomplete). Students who receive an I for missing the Final Eam will have to wait to start the net appropriate semester. F. Grading Policy Grade Scale = A = B = C = D Grades are not rounded up or down; i.e., 79.5 =79.5. The final course grade will not be rounded up. The student must earn a C in the course to pass. Eams 70% Final Eam 30% H. Assignment Policy It is the responsibility of the student to be informed of class progress and turn in any assignments due, and/or take the quiz or test scheduled for that day. Reading any assigned material assists the student to listen to the lecture with a higher degree of acuity and to participate in class discussion more effectively. A student cannot epect to understand what is being said in class when she/he has had no previous contact with the ideas or terms related to the topic. 3
4 I. Attention: All cell phones should be turned off during the class time. Place your phone on your desk, face up. This will be a reminder to have it turned off.
