14 EVALUATIVE PROCEDURES The final course grade will consist of: 4 Lecture Exams 6 Lab Quizzes Comprehensive Final Primarily multiple-choice questions simulating the NCLEX-PN format, with a possible perfect score of 100. Lecture exams will cover material covered in lecture and lab, and may include dosage calculation questions. The blueprint for the exams are included in the course objectives in the beginning of each chapter covered in the course. Quizzes will be administered as part of the lab grade. Each quiz will have up to 30 fill-in-the-blank dosage calculation questions. Dosage calculation is an essential skill necessary for safe nursing practice. A student whose average of the 6 quizzes is less than 74.5 will fail the lab component and will receive the grade of F as the overall course grade for VNSG The comprehensive final will be no more than 100 questions simulating the NCLEX-PN format, and will include dosage calculations. TOTAL 100% 35% 15% 50% Grading Scale A 89.5 to 100 B 79.5 to 89.4 C 74.5 to 79.4 D F Less than 60 The overall course average must be 74.5 or higher in order to pass the course. Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) - ATI Modules are assigned throughout the course to enhance student learning. The student will not be allowed to take the lecture exam until the assigned modules for the corresponding unit has been completed. ATI transcripts must reflect 85% mastery or higher to be accepted. At the end of the semester there will be a proctored comprehensive standardized Fundamentals ATI exam. At the discretion of the instructor and program director, additional points may be added to (only) the Fundamentals final course grade based on the ATI score level attained by the student. Course Remediation- With the exception of the comprehensive final exam, any student who fails a lecture exam or quiz will be required to meet with the course instructor for an academic conference and complete instructor-provided remediation. The student will not be allowed to take the next exam or quiz until the assigned remediation is completed. VNSG 1227 Essentials of Med Admin Student Information Plan Summer 2015 Page 14

15 EVALUATIVE PROCEDURES Missed Exams and Quizzes: Policy and procedure for missed exams and quizzes is found in the Appendix of this SIP. Taking an Exam or Quiz Early: Students are expected to complete exams on date scheduled. For students finding themselves in urgent and/or extenuating circumstances, a student may be allowed to take an exam early. The decision to allow a student to take an exam early will be entirely up to the discretion of the course instructor and/or program director. Exams taken early or late will cover the same topics as the scheduled exam but may consist of alternate test items. See the makeup exam policy in the appendix of this syllabus. Late to an Exam or Quiz: Students are expected to complete the exam or quiz within the class time allocated. No additional time will be given. If you arrive after any student has already completed the exam or quiz and left the room, then you will not be allowed to take that exam or quiz. Attendance: Please refer to the Vocational Nursing Student Handbook for the program attendance policies. The following applies to VNSG 1122, VNSG 1227 (lecture & lab portions), & VNSG 1423 (lecture & lab portions) Absences for Exams: See VNSG Makeup Exam Policy in the Appendix of this SIP for makeup exam deadline and procedures. Absences or Tardies for lecture or lab: You are responsible for any information and materials you miss. A total of 2 absences are allowed for this course. Three instances of being late equals one absence. Late is defined as coming in 15 minutes after the published start time of the class. Missing ½ of lecture or ½ of a lab equals a half day absent. There are no excused absences. I...Incomplete. No Incompletes or I grades will be given for courses in the Vocational Nursing Program. W...Withdrawal. It is recommended that the student talk to the instructor before withdrawing. Current course withdrawal information can be found in the printed version of the ACC Schedule for this semester or online at ACC Course WITHDRAWAL INSTRUCTIONS. Students who file withdrawal requests by the published deadline and have not exceeded the withdrawal maximum will receive a grade of W. The student is responsible for withdrawing themselves from the class before the official drop date. Students are cautioned that withdrawing from a class may interfere with future financial aid. 20 MAKEUP EXAM AND QUIZ POLICY Any exams/quizzes you miss will be made up in the Vocational Nursing Department or sent to the Alvin Community College Learning Lab for you to take. Makeup exams/quizzes are available in the Learning Lab 2 business days after the day you missed them. Any makeup exam/quiz you take will be automatically returned to your instructor and graded 2 to 4 business days after you took the makeup exam/quiz. Do not ask the VNSG secretary for exam or quiz grades; she does not have access to grade records. The Learning Lab is located in the college library on the second floor of building A, to the left as you enter the front doors. Each semester the Learning Lab publishes an updated policy describing how to take exams in the Learning Lab. Refer to the hardcopy of this policy distributed by your instructor at the start of each semester, or online at If you have any problems using the Learning Lab to take makeup exams/quizzes, notify your instructor or the VNSG secretary. 1. A 15 point penalty is automatically deducted from the grade the student obtains on a makeup exam/quiz. The highest grade obtainable on a makeup exam/quiz is 85%. 2. You must complete each makeup exam/quiz no later than 2 weeks after the exam/quiz was originally given to the class, or by the end-of-semester exam/quiz deadline published in the current semester s Learning Lab policy, whichever occurs first. 3. Any makeup exam/quiz you do not complete within the above timeframe will be averaged in the applicable course grade as a zero ("0"). 4.
