And anytime that I am in my office. Beginning Date of Course: Friday February 20 th, 2015 Times/Location: Room A Course Description: This course will introduce the student to the nursing profession. It will teach students to apply discipline-specific knowledge, skills, values, meanings, and experiences (KSVME) for, with, or on behalf of those requiring and/or requesting assistance in achieving and maintaining their desired state of health and/or well-being. Strategies for success in the practical nursing program will be discussed. The role of nurses, law and ethics, stress management, and communication in therapeutic relationships will be emphasized. The practical nursing student will practice nursing that is patient centered, caring, culturally sensitive, safe, individualized, and based on a solid foundation of practical nurse appropriate knowledge and skills for specific populations across the lifespan 2. The practical nursing student will participate in interdisciplinary health care teams utilizing open communication and mutual respect. 3. The practical nursing student will utilize information technology, evidence based practice and quality improvement methods in the provision of patient care. 4. The practical nursing student will practice nursing with integrity in a professional, ethical and legal manner working within the practical nursing scope of practice while valuing personal and professional development. 5. 2 Course Objectives: 1. Identify and examine the role of the practical nurse related to evidence-based data collection, the nursing practice act and the law, within various nursing settings. 2. Introduce beginning knowledge of the nursing process, nursing theory, and critical thinking necessary to assist in gathering data to contribute to individualized, evidence-based plan of care that includes cultural, spiritual, and developmentally appropriate interventions related to health promotion. 3. Discuss methods to advocate for patients ensuring quality, safe, and patientcentered care. 4. Review and demonstrate beginning knowledge of patterns of health promotion, health deviations and concepts of stress, grief and loss. 5. Introduce informatics to access clinical documentation, evidence based practice, and health care related concepts. 6. Identify and practice specific communication skills both verbal and nonverbal that promotes safe, therapeutic, and patient-centered relationships 7. Introduce basic skills related to the nursing process, critical thinking and safe practice. 8. Introduce organizational and priority setting skills while maintaining safe practice. 9. Identify common concerns related to patient safety and the delivery of quality care. and participate in activities that promote performance improvement. 10. Identify ethical, legal and professional issues. 11. Review and practice appropriate communication and documentation.as a member of the health care team. 12. Demonstrate professional behavior as evidenced by honesty, integrity, dignity, respect, ethics, confidentiality and attitude. 4 Grading Scale: A C A C B D B D B D C F 59 & below A minimum grade of 80% is required to progress in the nursing program. Grades will not be rounded up. Evaluation for this course consists of: Approximately 3-4 take-home exams. Each question on take-home tests are worth ¼ point. Late take-home tests will be given a 5% deduction per day late. The final will be a cumulative, proctored exam. Approximately 3 written assignments (100 points) o Related to the book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down or related to the video Crash. o Opinion paper on ethical issue o Others as assigned Excessive absences are defined as more than 1/16 th of the total class hours. Each unexcused absence over 1/16 th of the course will result in 10% being subtracted from the next scheduled test. Excused absences are defined in the student handbook. Sleeping in class will be treated as an absence. Injury/Medical Condition: A student who is unable to safely perform any of the requirements of class, lab, or clinical due to an injury or medical condition (including pregnancy) is to notify his/her instructor immediately. A physicians slip is required for any restrictions. Students unable to participate at the level expected may need to complete the course at a time when they are able. Being late is viewed as disrespectful to fellow classmates and your instructor. o A 5% deduction will be assessed from the following test beginning with the 3 rd tardy. o Five percent will continue to be deducted for every tardy after that. A record of total absences and tardies is included on our reference forms. Completion of the Chapter Prenhall assignments at a minimum of 80% is an expectation of the course. One point per assignment per day will be subtracted if late. Interruption of class time by cell phone use (including texting) is not acceptable. They will be collected at the beginning of each class if their use interferes with class-time. Dishonesty/Cheating Dishonesty of any kind, including cheating on examinations or any assigned work, will result in a failing grade for the course. Cell phones will be collected prior to class time. Pencils will be provided by the instructor. Students may not wear hats or have anything on their desk while testing MGL NUR 101: Page 4
