Brushstroke The appropriately named Sound City Studios at Shepperton opened in 1932 when talkies were becoming firmly established. Over the years, the studios have hosted many of the most memorable and top rated feature films in the history of cinema: Besides his classic Hobson s choice (1954) starring Charles Laughton, David Lean filmed Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and A Passage to India (1984) on its versatile sound stages. Carol Reed filmed The Third Man (1949) starring Orson Welles, and much later, directed the award winning musical Oliver (1968) starring Ron Moody. It was at Shepperton that the legendary film star, Charles Chaplin, made his secondlast film; A King in New York (1954). And, continuing the comedy thread, Blake Edwards filmed the Pink Panther series ( ) starring Peter Sellers, and practically took over the studio even painting the studio restaurant entirely pink. More recently, Shepperton Studios has been home to films such as the phenomenally successful Harry Potter series ( ); Notting Hill (1999); Bridget Jones s Diary (2001); Bridget Jones the Edge of Reason (2004); Shakespeare In Love (1998); and Calendar Girls (2003), where Brushstroke Make Up school was seen as a convincing Hollywood make up department. Brushstroke has been at Shepperton Studios for 23 years of its 81 years existence, and is always pleased to be of assistance to current productions. This prospectus is copyright protected 2

Introduction to Terms 7,8 and 9 for the Extended BTEC Diploma Students will be allocated the order of training, what is to be expected, what must be achieved in working with scripts, hands on and portfolio work including evidence containing reference pictures and personal written work to be presented end of each section. Throughout terms 7, 8 and 9 it is constantly hands on make up and hair, working from various story boards (scripts). This third years trains students to designer level and how one plans and over sees a production. These three terms are designed to teach students how to cope with last minute reality situations that can always arise on set or location. Having already completed two years of your course, students are always aware that work experience that may have been offered during the training would obviously be a huge benefit to gain experience in studio or location to help build up their portfolio, this we know can be on is on films, TV, and theatre productions within the west end. ( see students achievements) This opportunity to go out working on the first two years whilst training, gave many students an insight as to how one works with a crew and how the pressure is on. One, two or three opportunities to work on set does not mean we know everything. Not every make up, hair, schedule, script, actor, time or location is going to be the same, so being a newly trained make up assistant/ artist one must know that you may come across various situations, uncomfortable locations, unsociable hours, artists that turns up late giving you very little time, change of schedule when your already set up to do another. These terms are designed to train each student by allocating them with their own scripts to read and then break down to enable them to produce a make up and hair plan. Group discussions within the class will be held so that all students can talk about their script they have been given. This is usual protocol within the industry where make up, costume and all other departments come together prior to production to talk about their planning requirements and to listen to what is expected of them. All students for their first script hand outs will work in twos. This is so they can discuss their ideas with each other to make it easier to work on script break down, such as what make ups are required and budgeting the items as if they were going to have to buy it for a production. This section starts with talks from industry professionals; this could either be a Producer, Director, first assistant director, camera man, costume designer, make up designer, actor or actress. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and to hear how different departments work together and what they expect from you being the makeup artist. Time limits to complete your make ups and hair work will be allocated and then discussions are held as to whether you followed your story board correctly and if your make up designs helped you achieve your character. Students cover costume and historical content for performance and business, researching into how make up and performance has changed over the years. Last minute quick make up and hair changes may be asked of you by the lecturer to put the pressure on the class, this happens frequently in the real world industry having very little time to think, so it s good practice. 29
Term 7: Section one Students cover health and safety, data protection, confidentiality, script clearance, etiquette, hygiene, dress, attitude, politeness, positive attitude, listing at all times, eye contact, correct posture when standing and sitting. Understanding the reasons for been given constructive criticism if it s required from a lecturer or assessor. Understanding Brushstroke rules and regulations and why discipline is important with in the classroom and studio. Also group bonding as this course involves working together at all times. For this first stage students are allocated a partner by the lecturer, throughout the course all will have the opportunity to work with different fellow students, lecturers chose your partners. Industry professionals talk to the class and answer any questions. The class study one particular script and then have group discussions with the lecturer to learn how they would surmise what make ups are required and where the make up changes should be made if necessary. This includes sketches that they can work from, including their chosen colours that they want to use and products. Once all students feel comfortable and understand the lesson, students will be paired and given the same script to work from. When all are prepared with their make up plan, a lesson is held to listen to fellow students reasons for their decisions on why they have chosen certain colours and how they see their characters professional guidance is given at all times. When all understand the previous lesson taught, different story boards are then allocated. It s very important that students build up their own personal folder containing sketches, reference pictures, notes and any general additional information. Your course work will be checked at the end of this section. Section two Hands on make up and hair Students work on each other using all their previous training from terms 1 6 and all make up and hair work produced during this course must be acceptable for HDTV. Students must display their research, notes and sketches that have previously been checked at the end of section one. Before commencing their make ups, all research information on their characters must be displayed so the lecturer can compare their make up techniques to their written information and to see if they are following it correctly. The character being created could consist of several changes; this may include adding additional make up/hair techniques to what s already been produced. As in previous terms, we advise that continuity pictures should be taken throughout your class to enable you to reapply make up and hair to the same student on another training day to look exactly the same, if need be, until the story board is completed and marked. Categories for story boards may focus on; Make up special effects, Period drama (including the use of wigs or hair pieces), Television soap opera, body make up including airbrushing (further demonstrations may be necessary), Commercials and Fashion. Course work and reference pictures will be checked end of this section. 30
Section three Term 8: This lesson is over the duration of two weeks and will involve simple basic make ups to more complex make up. Allocated speed time to complete hair/ make up. Each section is half an hour with a 15 minute break between make ups. If you cannot complete your make up in the given time you must stop what you are doing and prepare to swap over, once you have been asked to do so by the lecturer. The whole class must work to the same time and rota and all students must try and complete four story boards in one day, when working on each other, this means eight make ups will be achieved. *** Allocated speed time to complete putting up hair ready for wig. Each section is half hour with a 15 minute break to reset. If you cannot complete your hair work in the given time you must stop what you are doing and prepare to swap over once you have been asked to do so by the lecturer. Each student must try and complete four sections. When working on each other this means eight sections. During these two weeks students will be given additional assessments Section four Story boards presentation Students can design a character which for example, could be from a film, television soap opera, or a high fashion/ glamour look which must include hair. Your fellow students will be asked to look at your story board and should able to understand clearly as to what you want them all to copy. Story boards on media subjects such as film and television work well, especially when using make up effects. Depending on the detail of the story board presented, a day could be allocated to each student. Prior to this, a week is given to the whole group for preparation of their story board and at the end of that week it must be handed in to the lecturer, where it will be held and given back the day before the presentation. The make up and hair look can be chosen by the student. The Story board must contain sketches and photos of what you would like the class to achieve. It must show step by step instructions of application, colours and shading etc How you want the hair to look and how they must achieve the style. All students finished results should look very much the same. The lecturer then holds a discussion with the group to analyse each individuals work in detail. The student who designed the make up and hair can give her /his comments. 31
Term 9 Section five An exam date will be allocated to those taking the BTEC Extended diploma and students will be guided and prepped on what they need to do. Having nearly completed this Three Year Course all students are required to produce their final work in a portfolio with any written information and reference photos, (photocopies from books are not allowed). All information must be individual and personally written and designed, please remember that guidance is always given throughout the course.
