2 About the Software and Digital Media Course The AUTM Software and Digital Media Course is designed specifically for technology professionals who work with information assets such as software, digital media, databases, electronic data, and Web sites. Go back to your office with the tools and relationship-based models to proactively build your university s portfolio of information assets, manage projects based on information assets and create a sustainable software, digital media and subscription-based licensing practice. About AUTM The Association of University Technology Managers is a nonprofit organization with an international membership of more than 3,500 technology managers and business executives. AUTM members are managers of intellectual property, one of the most active growth sectors of the global economy. AUTM members come from more than 300 universities, research institutions and teaching hospitals as well as numerous businesses and government organizations. Software and Digital Media Planning Committee: Chair: Charles R. Williams, University of Oregon Committee: Richard Friedman, University of Texas, Austin Doug Hockstad, The University of Michigan Yatin S. Karpe, Lehigh University Betsy Merrick, University of Texas, Austin Jane Muir, University of Florida Kate Tallman, University of Colorado Robert A. Williams, University of Oregon Keynote Speaker: Patrick L. Jones, University of Arizona The AUTM Software Course keynote address will provide an overview of the field and touch on the differences between managing software and digital assets and other research artifacts in the academic environment. 8:45 10:15 a.m. Concurrent Session A Intellectual Property Tool Kit for Case Managers Dana Bostrom, Portland State University Speakers: Charles C. Valauskas, Valauskas & Pine LLC Charles R. Williams, University of Oregon Managing software and digital media begins with a fundamental understanding of how information-based materials are created and viewed by developers as well as their communities, and what the appropriate role for intellectual property is in the context of each research project's goals. In this session you will learn how to identify information assets embedded in innovations at your university and evaluate the role of IP in managing the quality of information-based materials (standards), building the reputation of your innovators and institution, and choosing associations that develop positive academic and commercial relationships. We will focus on attaching the correct intellectual property rights, such as copyright, marks and data rights, to information-based materials, given the goals chosen by a research project and linking these to permission and licensing models. 8:45 10:15 a.m. Concurrent Session B Advanced Issues and Practical Applications Gerald Barnett, University of California Santa Cruz Speakers: Patrick L. Jones, University of Arizona Robert A. Wooldridge, Carnegie Mellon University Managing software and other digital media requires an understanding of the differences in the development and distribution of this form of intellectual property. This highly interactive session will examine a number of hypothetical scenarios. Small groups will be presented with materials, develop solutions and discuss the implications. Advanced concepts, such as layering open source and hybrid licenses, will be considered. This is an advanced session. Attendees should have experience executing multiple software licenses and a solid understanding of the terms of BSD, GPL and LGPL licenses. 10:15 10:45 a.m. Networking Break AUTM Software and Digital Media Course Goes Paperless The 2008 AUTM Software and Digital Media Course will be paperless. This means that handouts will not be distributed at any educational session. All registrants can access handouts before, during and after the course. 1. Before the meeting, visit, where all handouts submitted by speakers and moderators will be posted two weeks prior to the meeting. Print handouts of the educational sessions you plan to attend prior to leaving for the meeting and bring them with you. You may also save them to your laptop to view during the sessions. 2. After the meeting, handouts will be available at. AUTM Software and Digital Media Course
3 Meeting Agenda 10:45 a.m. Noon Open Source I Speakers: Richard Friedman, University of Texas, Austin Heather Meeker, Greenberg Traurig Open source is prevalent in universities. Individuals, collaborative communities and faculty members use open source as an alternative mechanism for publishing academic work. In this session, experts will provide a basic primer on open source and answer key questions, such as what is open source? What rights are (and are not) conveyed? How many different open source models are there, and what are the key differences between them? How can you make software available on an open source basis and still raise revenue by charging for licenses? Noon 1 p.m. Lunch 1 1:45 p.m. Application Developer s Point of View: Commercial Distribution Speaker: Richard Friedman, University of Texas, Austin Jeff Bennighof, University of Texas, Austin The AUTM Software Course continues its tradition of bringing topflight academic researchers to the table. In this session, Jeff Bennighof, a professor in Aerospace Engineering at The University of Texas, Austin will detail his experience with developing and commercializing AMLS software, now used by a majority of automobile makers to predict noise and vibration levels inside the passenger compartment during the design stage. Dr. Bennighof will describe his experience in drawing upon resources from federal funding agencies, computer hardware vendors, consulting firms and automobile manufacturers to create a product that has had a significant impact on industry and resulted in significant revenues to the university. 1:45 2:30 p.m. Application Developer s Point of View: Open Source Speakers: Richard Friedman, University of Texas, Austin Kazushige Goto, University of Texas, Austin Karl Schulz, University of Texas, Austin In this second session about faculty perspectives, Kazushige Goto, research associate, and Karl Schulz, assistant director of high performance computing, of the Texas Advanced Computing Center at the University of Texas, Austin, will discuss their experience using shared source licensing as a model for distribution. Goto developed a widely used software package called GotoBLAS, an implementation of the linear algebra libraries known as BLAS (Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms). The GotoBLAS library contains elementary math routines used within many scientific and engineering packages. 2:30 3:30 p.m. Open Source II Gerald Barnett, University of California Santa Cruz Speakers: Richard Friedman, University of Texas, Austin Heather Meeker, Greenberg Traurig Having created the groundwork for understanding the principles of open source, this second open source session will explore advanced topics regarding university use and participation, including when it should be used, in what flavors and how it affects patent positions (GPLv3/ALv2). We will also examine how some exploit and work around open positions when open source is inappropriate or too restrictive, transition and extensions, and open source in relation to innovation and research economics. 3:30 4 p.m. Networking Break AUTM Software and Digital Media Course 4 5:30 p.m. Software Patenting Speakers: Andrew Dillon, Dillon & Yudell LLP Fred B. Holt, University of Washington Robert A. Wooldridge, Carnegie Mellon University In this session, we will hear from a panel of technology transfer professionals, including Andrew Dillon, managing partner and patent attorney for Dillon & Yudell LLP. Each panelist has extensive experience in software patenting and startup formation. They will discuss what, when and how to file, current trends and how to manage expectations from a business and institutional perspective. 6 7:30 p.m. Reception Saturday, June a.m. Continental Breakfast 8 10 a.m. It s All About the License Charles R. Williams, University of Oregon Speakers: Daniel Dardani, Massachusetts Institute of Technology John McEntire, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Kate Tallman, University of Colorado Software licenses come in all shapes and sizes, from exclusive developer/distributor to end-user. Through interactive discussion, along with review of case studies, this session will cover some key terms of different license approaches such as evaluation, distribution, site licenses, and creation of derivatives. The goal of the session is to explore how case managers might handle the concerns and expectations of university stakeholders and licensees :30 a.m. Networking Break 10:30 a.m. Noon Startups Based on Software or Information Assets Speakers: Fred B. Holt, University of Washington Patrick L. Jones, University of Arizona Robert A. Wooldridge, Carnegie Mellon University Nationally, the history of university technology transfer activities critically illustrates a development gap between university laboratories and product commercialization. For many technologies, forming a university spin-off is the fastest and most cost effective way to bridge this development gap and demonstrate commercial promise. With any startup, a disruptive platform technology is necessary. Other aspects, such as network effects and capital intensiveness, are very different for software-based companies. In this session, we will explore the similarities and differences of one potential assessment tool and a number of different examples and scenarios. Noon 1 p.m. Lunch on Own 1 3 p.m. Software Management Operations in a Nutshell Gail Dykstra, University of Washington Speakers: Dana Bostrom, Portland State University Lisa Kuuttila, University of New Mexico Learn how to set up software operations management and digital media projects. Panelists will address innovator and institutional concerns, revenue management mechanisms, and infrastructure needs and challenges. 3 p.m. Course Adjourns
