MORE SUPPORT FOR LAPTOPS In addition to the Laptops for Learning workshops, we have added a new link to our website where all teachers (both DET and non DET) can find more support on incorporating the use of laptops into their lessons: Click here for German websites suitable for Stage 5 and 6 students. Click here to access the sample units of work. In the units of work, you will see this icon next to some of the teaching and learning activities. The icon indicates activities suitable for laptop use. When you click on the icon, a step by step planning guideline will pop up. We have included an example on the following page. The Stage 5 (Year 9) unit is Healthy environment and recycling and the Stage 5 (Year 10) unit is Special occasions. Both units include all related resource sheets and are not connected to a specific textbook, meaning anyone can teach them. The Year 9 resources sheets are hyperlinked to the unit. The Year 10 resource sheets can be downloaded from: man/k_10/spocindex.htm 6
MORE SUPPORT FOR LAPTOPS Languages activity planning guide Language: German Stage 5 (Year 9) Unit of work: Healthy environment Teaching and learning and recycling activity: 15 Summary of activity This activity involves students in using Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 to create an oral presentation: Was macht meine Familie für die Umwelt? (What does my family do for the environment?) Teacher preparation Teachers need to ensure that: students are familiar with Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 students are familiar with key vocabulary and structures related to the topic. Step 1 Teacher introduces the task: Students will give an oral presentation in class, with visual support using PowerPoint. The PowerPoint will contain six slides (title slide plus five information slides written in German) on what their family does for the environment. Each information slide must contain at least one image and one full sentence of German text. Students will use the PowerPoint to support their oral presentation, with spoken information differing from the text on the PowerPoint, e.g. the written text may say Das ist mein Papa im Supermarkt!, with the accompanying spoken text being Am Mittwoch gehen wir einkaufen. Mein Vater benutzt nie Plastiktüten. Teacher and students develop explicit marking criteria for the task. Step 2 Students: take and download their own digital photographs or select images from the web to illustrate each information slide (Note: students need to ensure they correctly attribute images downloaded from the web.) develop the text for each slide, both spoken and written have their work peer evaluated, asking the teacher for feedback where necessary. Step 3 Students give their presentation to the class. Teacher provides detailed written feedback incorporating suggestions for improvement where necessary. 7
MORE SUPPORT FOR LAPTOPS What do the Laptops for Learning icons mean? Assessment Audio Collaborate Copy Document Internet Keyboard Listen Photo Podcast Read RSS feed Share documents Speak Task Video Watch Webcam Wiki Write Don t forget! Have a look through the material for other languages when you re on the Digital Education Revolution NSW site, as most laptop activities are transferable across languages, and each language takes different approaches and covers different topics and/or Stages. 8
OUR FAVOURITE WEBSITES FOR LAPTOPS Note: As with all website recommendations, take a look first before trying with your students. Got more? Please any additional suggestions to [email protected] This is a great site to get students creating a mini animation. Students can: choose backgrounds, scenes, characters and music write the script which will appear in the speech bubbles give the animation a title name the director (themselves) can write one (or several) scenes and change the characters the movie to you or classmates! This is a website that will help students create comic strips using their own photos and write descriptions. Students can make their own movies, choosing characters and character movement/facial expressions, camera angles, backgrounds, sound effects, etc. By selecting German male as the character voice, students can make their characters sound German. 9
OUR FAVOURITE WEBSITES FOR LAPTOPS A simple and free web application to create mind maps online. Mind maps can be shared with teachers and classmates, and exported as JPEG files. You will need to create a user name and password to access the software and save your work online. The following example was created as part of the Stage 5 unit of work on Special occasions, and the key questions were: Wie heißt das Fest?, Wann feiert man es?, Warum feiert man es?, Wie feiert man es? This site allows students to create an avatar, type in their script and hear the avatar speak their script in German! Students must register, and then they can create an avatar, customising their chosen character with different facial features and colours, clothing, bling, voice and background. Students can type in text and then select Accent/Language to have their text generated into spoken language, or students may record their own voices. Great fun and quick and easy to use! Creations may be published and/or ed. At the end of each topic, students can create their own vocab list in a much more visually spectacular fashion! Each wordle (see image left) can be printed off in colour, and laminated for students to display in the classroom or at home. An online flashcard maker and vocabulary learner. Students can create their own sets of vocabulary (by chapter, by topic, etc.) and then learn the vocabulary through a series of steps and games. 10
HSC Online WHAT S NEW ON OUR WEBSITES? During 2009, we have been busy updating the Extension section of the German node. Students will find a comprehensive introduction to each of the prescribed issues: Tolerance of difference Coping with change Pressures in today s society. Each introduction includes a detailed unpacking of the issue, a range of activities and links to related reading texts. We have also included sample writing/speaking tasks, as well as discussion questions for each issue. (Note: The discussion questions for Risiko für Weihnachtsmänner appear only on HSC Online, not on the support CD ROM). The site also includes advice for students on approaching the examination. Curriculum K 12 Directorate During Term 3, the Languages Unit website was rebuilt, and there is now comprehensive information and resources available across all languages. You can also register for our workshops and conferences, order resources, find out about scholarships and learn more about key initiatives. If you haven t visited our site in a while, it s worth a look! For German, we have included a new unit of work for Stage 3, Goldlöckchen, and we have also updated existing units of work for Stage 5. 11
WHAT S NEW ON THE GOETHE INSTITUT WEBSITE? Goethe Institut Australien Train the trainer scheme The Oztrainer Professional Development Facilitators (PDF) page has been updated, and includes profiles of the NSW teacher trainers and their fields of expertise. Use this page to contact your local teacher trainer or to find out more about the scheme: Wikis You can join one of the Goethe Institut s wikis: ICT and Web 2.0 for the German Language Classroom Developed for German teachers K 12. The main focus is to show the variety of ICT and Web 2.0 tools available, and the wiki includes many useful links. Ideas for the German Language Classroom Ideas and materials regarding teaching German as a foreign language. You can contribute yourself or be involved in discussions on thinking skills, speaking, listening and writing. Theatre Techniques for the German Language Classroom The central idea of this wiki is to demonstrate, encourage and discuss the use of theatre based techniques in the German classroom. The wiki includes warm ups, language games, ideas for implementing small theatre scenes/projects, ideas regarding the use of body language as a means for communication and theatre techniques for the use of acting and filming. Lese Novelas Lese Novelas, published by Hueber Verlag (in Australia you can order the books through Intext), are a combination of short story and soap opera. As featured in the Term 3 Deutsch im Koffer, these texts are characterised by the simplicity of the language, plot and topic. The very short chapters, simple syntax and vocabulary meet the language level of beginning learners of German. Tasks and activities have been developed that encourage reading, listening, speaking, writing and role playing. Material is available to support Anna, Berlin. Further teaching ideas for the ABC series Jung in Europa und Neue Freunde, Landeskunde: 20 Jahre Mauerfall and for German Musik will be published soon. Poster set: Jugend The poster set Jugend is a useful tool for a variety of teaching situations, addressing learners at different proficiency levels. The portrayal of German teenagers encourages students to engage with the posters descriptively (oral and written), creatively or as a medium for extending grammar and vocabulary. A range of activities has been developed to support the use of the posters in the classroom. The posters are available from the Goethe Institut Australia. Please contact [email protected] 12

The celebration of St Martin UNTERRICHT PRAKTISCH Laterne, Laterne, Sonne, Mond und Sterne! This refrain echoes through the autumn streets of Germany every year on November 11. Children promenade through the streets with colorful, handmade lanterns, singing songs they learned by heart. Martinstag commemorates Sankt Martin (c ), Bishop of Tours, one of the most revered European saints. Die Mantelteilung is the best known legend connected with Saint Martin, when Martin, then a soldier in the Roman army, tore his cloak in two to share it with a freezing beggar at Amiens. Martinstag is celebrated by processions of children with candle lit lanterns and with a banquet of roast goose. Further information/resources ideas at: von tours.de/geschichte/index.html Both websites include hints and tips on making lanterns with primary students, recipes and song lyrics. The first website also includes soundtracks of the most wellknown songs.
