INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL PROJECT MULTICLUB (Through the European geocultural corridor of Longobardy) I PHASE 2009, THE BEGINNING, YESTERDAY The first phase has interested the Inner Wheel Clubs of BENEVENTO, SOUTH BRESCIA, BUSTO-LEGNANO-GALLARATE-TICINO. CIVIDALE, FOLIGNO, FOGGIA, which have started IW service activities SUPPORTING THE CANDIDATURE OF THE SERIAL SITE ITALIA LONGOBARDORUM TO UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE. With the title of The Longobards in Italy. Places of the power ( AD), accounts of the architectural excellence of the Longobard civilization have been proposed for international attention: the monastic complex of San Salvatore Santa Giulia Brescia; the
Gastaldaga area with the so-called Tempietto Longobardo and the Episcopal complex with the Palazzo Patriarcale below the National archeological Museum in Cividale of Friuli (UD); the castrum with the Torba Tower and the church outside the walls, Santa Maria foris portas of Castelseprio (VA); the Clitunno Tempietto of Campello on Clitunno (PG); the Basilica of San Salvatore in Spoleto (PG); the Santa Sofia complex with church and annexed cloister, part of the abbey, today housing the Museo del Sannio; and, finally, the Sanctuary of San Michele on Monte Sant Angelo (FG). The sites enclosed in the candidature represent, each for its own specific typology, the most significant or the best preserved of the numerous testimonies spread around the national territory and, on the whole, they reflected the universality of the Longobard s culture at its pinnacle. It must be added, also, that the Longobard Era was not present in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. The candidature answers the necessity that the list should be representative of all the cultures and civilizations. And the fact that it pertains not to one site but an entire Network, was an element of great importance and novelty. From the 19 th to the 29 th of June 2011 the International Committee gathered in Paris, and has expressed itself on the 42 candidature proposals. On the 26 th JUNE 2011 this CANDIDATURE HAS BEEN APPROVED BY UNESCO. 4 II PHASE, THE FUTURE, THINK AHEAD-AIM HIGH (Theme chosen by Catherine Refabert, President of IW 2011/2012) WIDENING OF THE PROJECT AND OPENING UP TO EUROPE On the 27 th June 2011 the following Inner Wheel Associates met in Rome: Mirella CENI and Anna COTTA, IW Club of South Brescia Almerinda PARRELLA and Paola PERRELLA, IW Club of Benevento Luisa VINCIGUERRA, IW Club of Torino Europea, WITH THE INTENT OF FORMING A PROMOTIONAL COMMITTEE FOR: 1. Widening the Project, redefining also the title to THE INNER WHEEL ON THE TRACKS OF THE LONGOBARDS IN EUROPE ; 2. Extending the Project to a national and international level; 3. Involving, on a voluntary basis, numerous Inner Wheel Clubs in Italy and Europe. This Committee will have the function of coordinating the initiatives, overseeing communications and the web site. OBJECTIVES: 1. INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING: The Inner Wheel represents within the European panorama an important occasion of comparison and dialogue between different Clubs and Districts. A dialogue that must be encouraged and followed, not just through contacts and twinnings, but also through shared projects such as the present one and through the creation of Inner Wheel Club NETWORKS. 2. INTERCULTURALITY Thinking of Jacques Le Goff, his words sound prophetic when he claimed that the fulcrum of European unity, the substantial link of a European Community is not a political or an economical one, but it was and is a CULTURE. Le Goff traces this belief back to 4
Charlemagne and his enlightened, pre-european and pre-humanistic circle. The history of Europe exhibits a multitude of histories. Its idea of civilization is constantly throughout the centuries a cultural answer. This has been honored by the Inner Wheel, when we think of our Charlemagne Rallye. The idea of a gathering which involved a group of European countries, along the lines of other types of gathering both in certain North-European countries and in India, was envisaged by the International president Anne Lebau, a Belgian national, who glimpsed in Charlemagne and in his Holy Roman Empire the connecting and unifying thread of such meetings. From this stems the name Rallye, to underline the itinerant character of the gathering, and Charlemagne, meaning the renaissance phase of the Carolingians, which interested all of the Holy Roman Empire. If it is true that the historian is a prophet who looks backwards (F. Schiller), why not go beyond by looking a little further back? Why not imagine new paths, routes of learning, visiting, sharing at a European level also through the HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE LONGOBARDS? DURATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL PROJECT 5 YEARS (from 2011 to 2016, renewable for a second five-year period until 2021). REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERING THE PROJECT INTEREST IN THE PROJECT PRESENCE ON THE TERRITORY OF: a. SITES WITH ARTEFACTS OF LONGOBARD ART AND CULTURE b. MUSEUMS WITH SECTIONS DEDICATED TO LONGOBARD ART AND CULTURE c. UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS, INSTITUTIONS, FOUNDATIONS AND RESEARCH CENTRES DEDICATED TO LONGOBARD HISTORY AND CULTURE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT The new Project will be broadcast first to a group of Inner Wheel Clubs which are the keepers of the Longobard remains, who are interested in the Project itself. 5
The implementation phase will be gradual and on a voluntary basis, liable to further expansion. MAPPING OUT OF IW CLUBS THAT ARE PRESENT IN THE EUROPEAN GEOCULTURAL CORRIDOR OF LONGOBARDY Through the International Directory of the Inner Wheel it will be important to: Identify the IW Clubs that are placed in the European geocultural corridor of Longobardy; Invite these Clubs to enter the Project, committing ourselves, however, to ensure that in each area there is at least an IW Club; Trace the corridor with all the Clubs that adhere to the Project. In the prospect of territorial and cultural continuity, the IW Clubs of reference on the tracks of the Longobard MIGRATION (Volkerwanderung), starting from Northern Europe to Italy, will help to better understand both the territorial aspect and the geographical one that was functional to this migration (the rivers and the valleys), both the art and everything which favored substantially the cultural exchange dynamics. INITIATIVES Through MULTIPLE CLUB CONTACTS TWINNINGS EVENT ORGANIZATION: Conferences Artistic itineraries Book presentations, multimedia products Exhibitions, etc. RALLYE (as a one off event, at a chance as a CELEBRATIVE MANIFESTATION AT THE END OF THE FIVE YEARS) the sites of excellence of the Longobard period can be valued, as also the Longobard experience within European culture, a synthesis of Germanic, Latin, Slav and oriental cultures. 6
COMMUNICATION In this Project, particular importance will be given to Communication, through all its possible mediums, also taking into account the relatives costs. COMMUNICATION will be favored through the construction of a WEB SITE dedicated to this Project. The site will be a window, always open and updated, with interactive space. In Italian and English. A large container in order to inform and communicate efficiently, divided into areas and themes, trying to optimize key words within texts; with a logical and immediate representation of information, with an easy and fast comprehension of all the contents. The site will be the main instrument of communication. 7
