1 Call for applications 2014 The musée du quai Branly Presentation Simultaneously a museum, a cultural center, and a place for research and teaching, the musée du quai Branly was born from the political desire to highlight non-european cultures, in the heart of Paris, beneath the Eiffel tower. Founded on a collection of 300,000 objects, the permanent exhibit is organized into four geographic zones: Asia, Africa, Americas, and Oceania. The museum has taken on a dynamic, open proposition as its slogan: where cultures meet in dialogue. This idea is the driving force behind most of the Museum s lines of action: cultural programming, disseminating and sharing knowledge and expertise with the cultures originating the collections, international cooperation, and making the collections available to others. The Photoquai s Residencies program With a view towards the non-european and non-us-american contemporary creation, in particular in the plastic arts and photography from these four continents Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas the musée du quai Branly has implemented an artistic creation subsidy program. Entitled Photoquai s Residencies (Photoquai s Residencies, ex- artistic creation projects ), it is related to the Photoquai photo biennial ( Created in 2007 by the musée du quai Branly and exclusively dedicated to non-western photography, Photoquai, the biennial exhibition of world images, takes place on the Seine River Banks in front of the museum, and in the garden of the musée du quai Branly. Hailed from its first edition for its quality, originality, ambition and relevance, Photoquai pursues its original mission: showcasing artists whose work is little known in Europe, and stimulating communication and the exchanging of views of the world. Every year, this program gives one or several non-european and non-north-american contemporary artists the chance to submit a creative project related to the mission of the musée du quai Branly, where cultures meet in dialogue, and coherent with a personal aesthetic path. The photographic works created so far all contribute to a testimony of a different outlook on the world. For the artists, it is an out-of-place residency that can take them closer or further: some stayed in their own countries, others came to Paris or travelled to wherever it was they had chosen to execute their project. 1

2 Program general terms This call for applications concerns exclusively non European artists, and non-north American artists, using the photographic image. The creation subsidy, in the amount of 15,000, should allow the selected artist to successfully complete a specific project in line with his current research and production. This amount integrates both the artistic fees (author s rights) and the general expenses due to the residency costs in the countries of the artist s choice. The project developed should be within the continuity of a personal artistic career. The residency doesn t consist of a long-term stay in Paris, unless the artistic project is anchored in France. The programme s aim is to show elsewhere seen from elsewhere. Elsewhere can consist of a theme, a country, a people, an artifact, or part of the musée du quai Branly s collections. The Residency s primary interest should be photographic, beyond any documentary or ethnographic aspects. The entirety or a part of the photographs constituting the series realized by the laureates 2014 will enter the musée du quai Branly s collections, as photographic prints, signed and numbered by their author, and after decision of the collections committee. Submitting a candidature implies acceptance by the candidate of all the terms listed in the competition rules, such as: - Enventual exhibition of the artwork realized within the Residency time inside the musée du quai Branly or within any partner venue. This exhibition may tour round the world if needed; - Guarantee the exclusivity of the artwork presentation to the musée du quai branly, until end of 2015 and the 5 th Edition of Photoquai; - Authorize the musée du quai Branly to publish a catalogue presenting the series realized during the Residency; - Authorize noncommercial and promotional uses, by the musée du quai branly, of all images and texts produced on or about the artwork (internet website, Photoquai website, press and media ). 2

3 Practical information Prepare your application? Candidature packages must include the following items: - The inscription form duly filled up - A short note of intent (max. 2 typewritten pages) explaining the proposed project. This memo must be written in English OR in French. - A short candidate s written biography (500 signs max) relating the essential points of the candidate s professional activity, exhibitions, publications, and any grants and awards that may have been received. - A photocopy of a valid passport; - A visual document, (preferably a CD or DVD, and a few prints) representative of his/her current and previous works. The purpose is to provide insight into the work that will be realized for the Photoquai s Residencies. - An estimate of the expenditures required to create the works (transportation, visas, cost of materials, accommodations...) that will be covered directly by the artist using the prize money. - A candidate s photo portrait (300 dpi minimum). Applications packages must be submitted by postmail only, until May 31 st 2014 at midnight the latest, to: Résidences de Photoquai Direction du développement culturel musée du quai Branly 222, rue de l Université Paris Cedex 07 FRANCE Submitting a candidature implies acceptance by the candidate of all the terms listed in the competition rules above. An incomplete package will not be submitted to the selection committee. The selection Candidature packages will be examined by an in-house short list jury at the musée du quai Branly. The final selection jury will meet in July 2014, including international photography professionals from within the musée du quai Branly and without. Successful candidates will be contacted directly and their names will be published on the musée du quai Branly s and/or Photoquai s website. In case of selection, the laureate agrees to: - Deliver realized artwork by May 31 st 2015 the latest, and keep all series confidential until the end of 2015 and its eventual exhibition within the context of Photoquai. - Come to Paris on the musée du quai Branly s invitation, to coordinate the printing of the images from his series (between June and November 2015). - Donate to the musée du quai Branly a set of signed prints (from 5 to 15), from the subsidized project. These prints, produced by the musée du quai Branly during the artist s stay in France at Fall 2015, will be the subject of a prior selection by the artist in collaboration with the musée du quai Branly and coherent with the works produced. - Realize or contribute, in collaboration with the musée du quai Branly, to the realization of a multimedia program, making of, explaining the process and the works resulting from a year of creation. 4
