1 PE Plicy 1 At Eleanr Palmer we recgnise that physical educatin, experienced in a safe and supprtive envirnment, is a unique and vital cntributr t children s physical develpment and well-being. Nt nly des physical activity imprve children s health but it als has a psitive effect n academic achievement, emtinal security and interactin with thers. Aims: T prmte a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle by develping self-mtivatin t take part in physical activity utside schl; T develp a psitive attitude and interest in a wide range f physical activities; T cntribute t the physical develpment f each child; size, strength, fitness, speed, grss and fine mtr skills; T develp children s knwledge and ability in the 6 areas f P.E.; Athletic activities Games and ball skills Outdr & adventurus activities T cntribute psitively t individual children s self cnfidence and self esteem and t develp scial skills (c-perating in grups, playing fairly t rules); T understand what it takes t persevere, succeed and acknwledge thers success. The P.E Curriculum The fllwing describes specific features f PE at Eleanr Palmer: Thrughut the schl, P.E. is taught twice a week in ne hur slts. One lessn is led by Cach Martin a specialist PE teacher wh wrks with us full-time, since the new PE Grant. Martin was appinted t increase specialist input int PE. His fcus areas - in half term blcks - are negtiated with Kate each year and classteachers then plan the secnd PE lessn arund this. In

2 2 additin t this specialist input, we have a link with The Place dance schl And the Camden NVQ sprts Caching Scheme held at Talacre: classes rutinely have access t the facilities and caching there. Each class is allcated tw weekly slts t teach P.E. where they have pririty ver the hall and playgrund. All classes swim fr ne term a year frm Year 1; Teachers shuld use the curriculum framewrk (see Appendix 1) as a starting pint when planning wrk in Physical Educatin. This details what area f the P.E. curriculum t teach each term t ensure prgressin thrugh the key stages; This curriculum framewrk (Appendix 1) has been devised t ensure adequate cverage f the Natinal Curriculum s six activity areas. All classes will be expected t have cvered the 2 activity areas fr their specific year grup in each half-term blck; Individual lessn plans can be taken directly frm available resurces (e.g. Val Sabin flders) and adapted t suit the class. If the class teacher is cnfident they may chse t plan lessns n their wn; Crrect and safe PE kit must be wrn during all PE sessins (see sectin n PE kit belw); Teachers use bth teacher and pupil demnstratins t illustrate verbal explanatins wherever pssible; We make gd use f all ipad apps and the prjectr screen t supprt mdelling; Teachers select a mixture f cmpetitive and nn-cmpetitive activities; Teachers prvide fr lts f activity during a P.E. lessn t ensure maximum pupil invlvement we try t avid playing full-sided games (eg 11-a-side ftball) where the weaker players will have little cntact with the ball; Mixed ability grups are used where apprpriate. In games, this will develp the skills f the weaker players and ensure fair cmpetitin. In dance and gymnastics, this will encurage less cnfident children t be mre invlved in a grup activity; Hnest cmpetitin and the idea f ding ne's best is actively encuraged and praised during all lessns;

3 3 Suitable equipment is chsen fr the age and ability f the pupils - eg in runders prgressing frm: thrwing the ball, t using wide tennis bats, t using runders bats. Health and Safety Please refer t the sectin n Physical Educatin in the Health and Safety plicy. PE Kit Fundatin Stage and KS1 Children shuld bring in trainers r plimslls, a t-shirt r sweatshirt and shrts r tracksuit bttms/leggingsfr PE lessns. During indr activities children will be asked t wrk in bare feet fr gymnastics. KS2 In the interests f safety and hygiene teachers must insist n children changing int the fllwing kit fr PE lessns. This will ensure cnsistency and avid cnfusin fr the children. P.E kit shuld be stred in a labelled bag and kept n the child s peg during term time. Games and : Shrts and T-shirt fr indrs lessns in the halls (track-suit bttms and sweatshirts shuld nly be necessary in the playgrund n a cld day). Prperly fitting trainers r plimslls. and : As fr games but bare feet. : cstume fr girls. Kentish Twn Pl insists n trunks rather than shrts fr bys. Any children wh have lng hair need t tie their hair back ff their face r wear a swimming hat. Gggles are discuraged but can be wrn with written permissin. Outdr Activities: Generally as games, but therwise clthing apprpriate t the activity. General Pints Children shuld bring a nte if they are unable t participate thrugh illness r injury. Staff shuld be vigilant if a pattern f nn-participatin is established fr a variety f reasns (including child prtectin issues). If children are unable t attend a swimming lessn they will remain in schl and jin anther class. The child s class teacher will set them wrk t d. In all ther PE lessns children nt participating shuld remain with their class: helping in the lessn r ding PE related wrk. If children d nt have apprpriate P.E. kit in schl they may be asked t wear a spare kit frm schl stck

4 4 Resurces All resurces are kept in the PE cupbard (children are nt allwed in t the PE cupbard withut adult supervisin); Ask Cach Martin abut ipad resurces! equipment is lcated in the hall Any new equipment that is needed can be rdered thrugh Martin/Tania; Val Sabin lessn plans and accmpanying music and ther literature related t PE are kept in the PE cupbard. Any damaged equipment shuld be reprted t the PE crdinatr. Adults must always check the gymnastics equipment nce it s in psitin t ensure it s safe. Extra-curricular sprts Eleanr Palmer is fully cmmitted t prviding extra-curricular sprting pprtunities. These will include: Clubs (befre and after-schl) e.g. girls ball-skills, ftball Cmpetitin against ther primary schls in a range f sprts thrugh the Camden Schls Sprts Assciatin bth leagues and turnaments e.g. ftball, crss cuntry, swimming, athletics; Friendly matches against ther schls/grups e.g. Kingsgate/Brkfield Exhibiting wrk. Fr example a dance perfrmance in assembly r attendance at a gymnastics festival. Occasinal use f Acland Burghley s sprts facilities and gd use f the Talacre Centre. We have an annual cmpetitive Sprts Day where every child takes part. Links with ther agencies These include: Participatin in lcal sprts leagues (primarily the CSSA) with ther primary schls. Visits, and liaisn with, utdr educatin centres and agencies. Invlvement with Camden Sprts Develpment Unit/Camden NVQ Caching.
