1 The BTS Tunnel Design and Construction Course is organised and run by the British Tunnelling Society (BTS), an affiliate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The purpose of the course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of tunnelling. The course aims to cover all the major aspects of an underground project s life and will contain worked examples and workshop sessions to allow improved interaction between delegates and speakers. It is aimed at the wide range of professional services that support the tunnelling industry, including clients, tunnel operators and members of the financial and insurance sectors that may have a vested interest in tunnelling enterprises, as well as young tunnel design and construction engineers. The course speakers are all recognised industry experts in their own fields, and the BTS Tunnel Design and Construction Course is recognised within the industry as providing the highest standard of technical content, with the course material being presented in a format designed to engage and inform attendees from a wide range of backgrounds. This annual course traditionally attracts a wide range of delegates from around the world, where challenging tunnelling projects demand informed and competent professionals at all stages of the project life cycle. Attendees will gain a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of tunnelling in a wide range of ground conditions. Industry best practice will be presented by leading experts in the various technically challenging fields of tunnelling technology. Who Should Attend? This course is ideal for young consulting engineers and construction engineers at the start of their civil engineering careers. It will also be valuable to representatives from client organisations, or the financial and insurance sectors, with involvement in tunnelling projects. WHAT THIS COURSE HAS TO OFFER Delegates will upon completion: understand current best practice in all aspects of tunnel construction from planning through to construction be informed on risk, technical solutions for differing ground conditions, and the health and safety aspects of tunnelling projects have networked with other delegates and had the opportunity to discuss technical matters with many of Europe's leading tunnelling practitioners receive copies of the latest relevant BTS publications.
2 What about the future? Well the future for the tunnelling industry in the UK looks positive for 2013 and beyond. Tunnelling projects remain to the fore in the National Infrastructure Plan and the pipeline of work top 40 projects. Therefore we can look forward to some significant projects on the horizon including Bank Station capacity Upgrade which should be awarded in 2013; Thames Tideway Scheme, due out to tender in 2013; Northern Line Extension to Battersea, again due out to tender in 2013; the High Speed Two rail link, which has a good proportion of tunnels; recent discussions regarding - Crossrail 2 have brought that scheme into the public domain. Outside of London there are the tunnels as part of the nuclear development at Hinckley Point; Coire Glas hydroelectric scheme in Scotland which will again have significant tunnelling works and not to mention the various other utility tunnels planned around the country has been another successful year for the tunnelling industry. Tunnelling is now well underway on Crossrail with the launch of the TBM s on the project and the commencement of the sprayed concrete works for the underground stations with permanent sprayed concrete now in place in many locations. Tunnelling works for Lee Tunnel and the cable tunnels in London are also well underway. This climate presents fantastic opportunities for right minded young people, engineers, surveyors, geologists, geotechnical engineers, and technicians, to take up a rewarding and personally fulfilling career in this industry. This Course, which is presented by the British Tunnelling Society, gives a basic appraisal of tunnelling and is aimed at those with limited knowledge of tunnelling or looking to further their knowledge. We will try to engage and stimulate debate, to enhance learning, and we will also seek feedback so that we can refine and improve future courses. Hopefully the course has something for everybody and will be an enjoyable experience for everybody. I look forward to welcoming you all in July and meeting the future of our industry.
