4 Requirements to earn a Credential Refer to Pathways to Teaching K-12 handout: 1-5 1) BA/BS -regionally accredited institution 2) CBEST should take after you complete English and math at SBCC 3) Subject Matter Competence CSET can take during junior/senior year. Each test has subtests that can be taken on different days after you ve mastered the specific area.

You will be tested on these subjects on the CSET. Subtests for MS CSET: I. Reading, Language & Literature, History & Social Science II. Science, Mathematics III. Physical Education, Human Development, Visual & Performing Arts 4) RICA 5) Teacher Preparation Program

6 University of California (UC) Minimum Admission Requirements: 60 UC Transferable Units 2.4 GPA 7 course Pattern (completion of IGETC satisfies 7 course pattern) Two English Courses Example English 110/120 & English 111 Philosophy 111 or Communication 235 may be substituted for the second course, however English 111 is required at some schools. One Transferable Math Course Math 114 (Math for Liberal Arts Majors), Math 120 (College Algebra), Math 117 or Psych 150 (Elementary Statistics) or higher Four General Education Courses (Select 2 of the 3 areas) Arts & Humanities Social & Behavioral Sciences Physical & Biological Sciences UCSB Guarantee: 3.2 GPA, Math and English 110 & 111 (or Phil 111 or Comm 235) completed by end of fall prior to transfer, 60 units and 7 course pattern by end of spring, last 30 units from a CCC. 7 California State University (CSU) Minimum Admission Requirements: 60 CSU Transferable Units (30 must be from the CSU GE pattern); 2.0 GPA; Many CSU campuses are giving priority to local area students. (i.e. Long Beach OCC, Golden West, Coastline). Non local GPA may be higher. Golden Four Two Transferable English Language and Critical Thinking Courses 1) English 110/120 (English Composition) 2) English 111 or Philosophy 111 or Philosophy 205 or Comm 235 (many schools require English 111) One Transferable Math Course Math 108 (Math for Elementary Teachers), Math 120 (College Algebra), Math 114 (Math for Liberal Arts Majors), Math 117 or Psych 150 (Elementary Statistics) or higher One Oral Communication Course Communication 121 (Interpersonal Communication), 131(Public Speaking), 141 (Small Group Communication), 161 (Business & Professional Comm), 235 (Argumentation and Debate) Most Liberal Studies programs require 121 or 131

8 Which major at 4 year institution? Single Subject: Major in the subject you want to teach! There are over 20 areas in which you can earn a credential. The most common are: English, Math, Science, Foreign Language, Art, Social Science (History, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology) Follow for major preparation courses required in your major. Multiple Subject: Major in Liberal Studies or Child Development at the CSU. If you will be transferring to the UC you must choose an academic major. (UC Riverside is the only UC with a Liberal Studies major). Many UC campuses offer a minor in education. (UCSB: Education and Applied Psychology with three different tracks 18 units each). Most popular majors at the UC: Sociology, Psychology, Communication, History, English Local Private Schools with Liberal Studies Degrees: Antioch, Westmont, CLU, Brandman (Santa Maria campus and online), La Verne (Ventura campus). Antioch and National (Camarillo campus and online) offer a BA in ECE.
