4 Upper-Division Transfer What does it mean? Completion of 60+ transferable units prior to transfer Transferring as a junior Why should students prepare for it? Saves money! To keep transfer options open Most CSU campuses do not accept applications from lower division (freshmen and sophomore level) students SAT/ACT and high school records don t affect admission

6 CSU Transfer Requirements 60 CSU transferable units 30 units of general education courses Courses on CSU GE or IGETC 4 Critical Courses the Golden 4 Speech English Composition Critical Thinking Mathematics 2.0 minimum GPA to be eligible for admission

7 Impacted Majors & Campuses Many majors and campuses require a higher GPA and/or specific major preparation courses for admission Impacted campuses Examples: CSUF, SDSU, Cal Poly Pomona Impacted majors Examples: Nursing Engineering, Architecture, Psyc, Soc at Cal Poly Pomona Child Development, Social Work at Cal State LA

8 Tips about impaction Apply broadly & plan your back-up options! Consider applying to some non-impacted campuses Impacted or non-impacted? View impacted major information on the campus s website Ex: Cal Poly Pomona impacted majors Use to identify the right classes to take for your major Maintain a strong GPA

9 Major Preparation Courses It s recommended that you start on major preparation classes before you transfer Some majors require specific courses before you transfer Taking major classes before you transfer will prepare you for junior/senior classes at CSU and will help you graduate in a timely manner

10 Associate Degrees for Transfer AA-T & AS-T degrees Learn more at Mt. SAC s AA-T & AS-T degrees & requirements: Benefits: Guaranteed admission to the CSU system but not to specific majors or campuses Priority admissions consideration at CSUs with designated similar majors Earn an associate degree and prepare to transfer at the same time If you transfer with a coordinating major, you will be held to no more than 60 semester units to complete your CSU degree in that major

11 When to apply for admission Not all CSUs accept mid-year transfers Complete all admission requirements by the end of spring prior to transfer (ex: complete all requirements by Spring 2015 to transfer in Fall 2015). Most campuses do not allow finishing requirements in the summer prior to transfer. To be accepted for: FALL semester or quarter WINTER quarter SPRING semester or quarter SUMMER quarter You must apply: October 1 - November 30 of the previous year June 1 30 of the previous year August 1 31 of the previous year February 1 28 of the same year

12 CSU Application Basics Apply for all CSUs at $55 application fee per campus Application fee waiver for four campuses Family size and income information Gather information when you re ready to apply: ALL college transcripts (unofficial) CSU transferable GPA Check CSU portals and to do lists for instructions after you apply (look for transcript deadlines!) CSULB & SDSU supplemental applications Nursing supplemental applications

14 How much does CSU cost? $ per year (tuition) 6.1 units or more per term $4000 per year (tuition) 6 units or fewer Non-resident/international students $ per year PLUS $373 per unit (semester schools) or $248 per unit (quarter schools) Total estimate: $16,000/year (12 units/semester)
