April 1 & 2, 2014 Irvine Valley College Transfer Presentation by Caryn Sussman, Counselor(csussman@ivc.edu) PART ONE and PART TWO Woodbridge High School Tips for getting started: Consider signing up for a Counseling Course in the Summer session or Fall semester. Counseling 1 Academic Planning, Counseling 102 Career Exploration or Counseling 200 A, or B, or C- depending on where you are in your decision making process for transfer. Study for your math and English placement exams, this will determine what level you will be placed in and will affect how long it takes to transfer. Sign up for either a Fast Friday or In-Person Advisement Session this week to
ensure that you get the one you want at: /friday.aspx Developing an Academic Plan: The Counseling 1 and Counseling 200 courses will assist you in the development of your academic plan for transfer as well as ensure that you have a counselor approved plan on file for the purpose of priority registration. General Education Requirements: IGETC vs. CSU Certification- Which one is right for you? If you are unsure about your major, IGETC can count for both UC AND CSU; consider taking G.E. classes in which you are interested in exploring further for a potential major. The links for the general education patterns can be found on the Transfer Center Webpage under the CSU and UC transfer information. Major preparation classes on Assist is the website that shows what classes are required for certain majors for individual CSU
and UC campuses. It can also be used as a tool for major exploration. Some nuts and bolts of transfer: To be eligible to transfer you will need 60 units completed by the last spring semester just before you transfer; courses #1-99 transfer to a UC; courses #1-199 transfer to a CSU; when you transfer as a junior you will need both general education and major pre-requisites (found on assist); be mindful of the need for a competitive GPA that is dependent on where you want to transfer and your major; once you know your major, it is best to combine major and general education courses EACH semester; it is highly recommended that you complete your English and Math courses early. Transfer Center at your service: Check out the website ( found through the Student Services tab and all of the information available. In addition, the Transfer Center serves as a hub for all things transfer and will
assist you from the very start of your process- as you explore your choices, navigate through the maze of requirements, right up to filing your application to transfer. Counseling Center: It is up to you to access all of the support services at IVC, including counseling. You are not assigned a counselor or required to make appointments, yet a successful and smooth transfer is not easily accomplished without the guidance of counselors. Visit the counseling center from your 1 st semester there and go periodically to ask questions and make sure you are on the right track. (SC 220, ) PART TWO: Earn the highest GPA possible for you! Keeping up on the latest transfer information is key to being successful in your transfer endeavors. GPA requirements vary and change and are dependent on which campus you want
to transfer to and what major you select. Apply broadly to at least 3-4 schools to ensure the best possibility for being offered admission. UC TAG: Transfer Admission Guarantee- Choose 1 school to TAG with, and follow the criteria for the GPA minimum and major prerequisites and you will be eligible for guaranteed admission. UCI- 3.4 GPA (certain majors not eligible, no Business Administration); UCSB GPA (take English and Math early); UC Davis 3.2 GPA). The Transfer Center offers TAG workshops each semester to assist you in your planning, and the Counseling 1 and 200B classes will help you incorporate your TAG choice into your Academic Plan. nselors/files/tag-matrix.pdf = UC TAG Matrix CSU: CSUF- is considered to be in IVC s local area for admission, which means that for you, it is a great back up school to apply to! Currently
they are admitting our students with a minimum of about a 2.7 (that changes), for all other CSU s, including CSULB, check out their websites for the latest requirements: sions/transfer-major-criteria/index.html. A higher GPA is recommended for CSU s outside our local area. TAP: Transfer Alliance Program- UCLA: UCLA offers priority admission to students who complete IVC s Honors Program. Take 5 Honor s Classes (total 15 units) at IVC and apply to UCLA as a TAP applicant and you will have a much greater chance of being offered admission than regular applicants! It is easy and common for students to TAG with a UC and TAP with UCLA! Sign up for a Counseling 200B class and find out how! Check out the website for more information: cla-uci.aspx and
equirements.aspx for Honors Admission information. (3.25 non-weighted GPA from high school and more). Transfer rates for IVC honor students generally run about 80-90% admission compared to 20-30% for non-honors students!!. UCLA- posts GPA averages admitted per major check out: (3.5 and higher) _tr/ucla_tag.pdf USC: Recommended GPA about 3.7 (recommended!) Access the website for their statisticshttp:// ocuments/usc%20transfer%20data% jpg Chapman: Recommended 3.2 and higher
CSU: Associate Degree Transfer- ADT (transfer guarantee): (CSU website); 12 majors offered (ex. Psychology, Sociology, Business, Math); access more information on the Transfer Center Webpage for the details of the requirements and sign up for Counseling 200C if transfer to the CSU is your goal. Benefits are: Guaranteed admission to A CSU campus (might be re-directed to a CSU campus that you are eligible for); priority consideration for the CSU campus that you applied to; you get a.1 GPA bump; and are guaranteed to only have 60 units left to take at the CSU to graduate. CSU- General Education (IGETC or CSU Certification) Requires early completion of the Golden Four Classes - In planning your course sequence please plan on completing your transferable Math, English, Critical Thinking and Speech Communication classes EARLY!!!!!
Academic Support at IVC: Math Center- Support for all of your personal and academic needs are available at IVC. Learn about the resources in your Counseling Courses and by making an appointment with a counselor. Free tutoring for assistance with your Math classes available at: (web page for more information); Visit The Writing Center: gcenter/pages/default.aspx for assistance with your English courses. For free tutoring in your classes sign up for Tutoring 301, and view their website at: ges/default.aspx Not high school anymore: What can you expect to be different? And, as a result how do you need to BE different? Independentseek out services, ask questions, adopt an
assertive, pro-active approach to making sure you make the most of your college experience. You are the consumer, you pay for college, your future starts in college and is dependent on all the choices you make now. Your instructors WILL NOT remind you or pressure you to go to class or accomplish anything- it is completely up to you, if you are not great at time management, now is the time to change your procrastination habits and learn new study techniques-don t bring old, unsuccessful patterns of behavior with you- Don t waste the opportunity that having this clean slate affords you. Word of advice from other students- start studying early and stay on top of homework from the start of class, go to office hours and get to know your professors. Tailor your schedule to your optimal peak performance times/days- If you are NOT a morning person, don t sign up for 8:00 classes, and just as important, if you are not a night
person- the 7-10 pm classes are not for you! Keep in mind that you need to study 2 hours for every hour that you are in class (15 units= 30 hours of study time). No Matter what goal you come to IVC with, you should take the time to research and explore all of your options to best suit your interests!!!! Go on campus tours, talk to the reps that you can make an appointment with in the Transfer Center, and more Plan on visiting the Transfer Center during your first week on campus! Come see us in the Student Services Center Building, room 230 across from the Counseling Center and ask us about what we have going on throughout the year that you can take advantage of! Our phone number is Like us on facebook, visit our webpage.
On a more personal note, as a Transfer Counselor who witnesses countless success stories at IVC, I am so confident that not only will you reach your academic goals, but you will also obtain a high quality college education taught by the very best professors, surrounded by bright and motivated students! My advice is to get involved, enjoy every moment of it, it does go by very quickly, and to reach for the stars, you deserve it! BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ALL FOR A HAPPY 2014 GRADUATION AND SUCCESSFUL COLLEGE EXPERIENCE!
