1 A Course of Study f EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Associate Degree, Certificate of Achievement & Department Certificate Programs (fmerly Child Development) Early Childhood Education majs will be trained to supervise and provide care and learning experiences f infant through eight-year-old children in a variety of early childhood settings. Early Childhood Education professionals adhere to the guidelines as well as the Professional Code of Ethics of the National Association f the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) providing developmentally appropriate learning opptunities f the enhancement of the physical, intellectual, social, emotional and creative domains of young children. The Early Childhood Education maj focuses on educational practices that emphasize interpersonal relationships, cultural diversity, child-centered curriculum and the inclusion of children with special needs in all educational opptunities. The Early Childhood Education Program maj follows a natural progression that allows students to move from sht to longterm educational goals: preparation f the state Children s Center Permit, fulfillment of post-certificate Professional Development, completion of advanced Califnia Career Ladder courses (including paired specialization courses as well as the Califnia State Ment course), completion of an Associate in Science degree in Early Childhood Education - Career, Associate degree in Early Childhood Intervention Assistant, Associate degree in Early Childhood Intervention Teacher, and transfer to a four-year institution. Possible Early Childhood Education career goals include Early Childhood Education Teacher, Early Education Direct, Early Childhood Intervention Assistant, Early Childhood Intervention Teacher, Family Home Child Care Provider, Private ECE Center Owner/Direct, Early Childhood Special Education Teacher, K through 12 Teacher, Early Childhood Special Education Teacher, K through 12 Special Education Teacher, Parent Educat, Early Childhood Education Instruct, Marriage Family and Child Counsel, Child-Life Specialist. The Early Childhood Intervention programs will prepare students f career placements in public and/ private early intervention and educational settings that serve typically and atypically developing young children. Specific jobs and responsibilities may include serving as an early childhood educat with a specialization in wking with children with special needs, special education assistant f children birth to eight years of age, a one-to-one aide f a child (e.g., inclusion facilitat ), classroom aide with expertise in special needs, as an assistant to the early intervention team f infants birth to three years of age. Program Learning Outcomes: Students completing a degree certificate in Early Childhood Education will know the essential concepts, inquiry tools and structure of the content areas in children s learning and will identify appropriate resources. Students prepared in the education training programs will design developmentally effective approaches and design experiences that promote learning f children while integrating their understanding of relationships with children and families.
2 ASSOCIATE DEGREE - 60 UNITS The Associate degree in Early Childhood Education involves satisfacty completion of a minimum of 60 semester units with a C average higher including at least 30 semester units in the Early Childhood Education area of emphasis (articulated below), fulfillment of the Global Citizenship requirement, and fulfillment of all Santa Monica College general education requirements, CSU GE IGETC. Catalog rights dictate that a student may satisfy the requirements of a degree certificate by completing the general education and maj/area of emphasis requirements in effect at any time of their continuous enrollment. Continuous At least 50% of the area of emphasis (maj) units must be completed at Santa Monica College. Each course in the area of emphasis (maj) must be completed with a grade of C higher. EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTION TEACHER (41 units) A Certificate of Achievement is granted upon completion of the 41 required units listed under the Early Childhood Intervention Teacher Associate degree.
5 DEPARTMENT CERTIFICATE Catalog rights dictate that a student may satisfy the requirements of a certificate by completing the maj/area of emphasis requirements in effect at any time of their continuous enrollment. Continuous enrollment is defined as enrollment in consecutive Fall and Spring semesters until completion. At least 50% of the units required f Department Certificates must be completed at Santa Monica College. Students must receive a grade of C higher in each course to successfully complete the Department Certificate. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CORE (12 units) A Department Certificate f Early Childhood Education Ce is granted upon completion of 12 units listed below. This Department Certificate mirrs the courses required to obtain the Associate Teacher Permit accding to the Child Development Permit Matrix issued by the Califnia Commission of Teaching Credentialing. The 12 ce units are needed f employment in a Califnia Community Care Licensed program. Students that desire to wk in a early childhood setting are required to minimally complete these ce classes.
