1 TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAMS Teacher Preparation Programs The Teacher Preparation Programs offer an exciting opportunity for students because it streamlines the process of becoming a teacher. Two options apply to the PCC transfer student. Teaching is the highest form of understanding. Aristotle Pasadena City College and California State University, Los Angeles Earn your: Associate degree at PCC Bachelor s degree with a Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential or Preliminary Education Specialist Credential at CSULA The CSULA Option III is known as the Blended Program. With this option, a student may earn an Associate degree at Pasadena City College and seamlessly transfer to California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA). Upon completion of Option III the student will earn both a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree and a Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (elementary education), or become eligible for the Education Specialist Internship Credential. With a B.A. degree and a Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential, the student will be able to teach in a K 6 classroom. Or, as an alternative, be eligible for the Education Specialist Credential to work in a special education setting. To follow the Teacher Preparation Program, Option III (Blended), a student must select one of the traditional majors listed below: Child Development Liberal Studies Mexican American Studies Urban Learning (No Option IV Available) The CSULA Option IV may be chosen by late deciding students who are not following Option III (The Blended Program mentioned above) within their first year at Pasadena City College. Late deciding students will benefit from Option IV because it will also lead to completing either the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential or Education Specialist Internship Credential and Bachelor s Degree simultaneously as the Blended Program does. With Option IV, the student has to be certified with the California

2 Teacher Preparation Programs State University General Education pattern along with other requirements amounting to a total of 60 transferrable units. Note: Simply having your CSU GE Certification and units amounting to 60 may not qualify the student for the Associate Degree. (Please see the current requirements for the Associate Degree in the PCC Catalog or visit a Counselor in the Counseling and Career Services Division.) It is advised that students complete their CSU General Education Certification prior to transfer to avoid any additional lower division general education course work requirements at CSULA. Caveat: All students pursuing the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential whether in Option III or Option IV in order to teach elementary school, must eventually pass a test called the CSET: California Subject Examination for Teachers Multiple Subjects Option. The CSET assesses competency in multiple subjects and these subjects typically correspond to certain courses. For example HIST 2A World History, will assist the student in gaining specific knowledge that will be tested on the CSET. If a student did not take a course in World History, they would have to study independently to gain that knowledge to pass the CSET in that subject. Likewise, a course in Human Biology (BIOL 11), early American History (HIST 7A), Geology (GEOL 3), Physics & Chemistry (PHYSC 3/3L) and Mathematics (MATH 38) are other examples of courses that will help a student preparing for the CSET. Therefore, if a student chooses to simply follow the CSU GE Certification path (Option IV), they should consider the courses, if possible, from the Blended Option III to fulfill their CSU General Education to best prepare for the CSET. Should a student not pass all sections of the CSET, they must seek advisor approval at CSULA for directed electives. Option IV is more flexible with regard to a chosen major. For Option IV, a student may pursue any of the majors listed above in Option III as well as any other major such as, Psychology, Sociology, English, etc. Reminder: The student must be CSU General Education certified. Successful completion of courses and units (overall GPA of 2.75, with no grade lower than a C in any course) along with other courses will allow you to earn the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree at PCC, a Bachelor s degree from CSULA and a Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential or eligibility for an Education Specialist Internship Credential. The inserts in this brochure list the courses for each major and credential. CSULA Make a Difference TEACH!
