10 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SPORTS MEDICINE The accredited Master of Science degree program in sports medicine at University of Western States (UWS) is designed for health care providers seeking specialization in the conditioning and treatment of athletes. This education and degree opens up opportunities in the sports industry and enhances a provider s marketability to athletic populations. Sports medicine refers to all individuals responsible for keeping an athlete healthy. This team often includes an athletic trainer, chiropractic physician, physical therapist and/or medical doctor. Depending on the size of the athletic organization, the sports medicine team can range from one person to 20. In many settings, other specialties like dentists, ophthalmologists, sport psychologists, nutrition specialists, massage therapists and acupuncturists are also included on the sports medicine team. The Masters of Science degree in sports medicine is a natural fit for chiropractic physicians and other health care professionals who desire a specialty practice working with athletes. A sports medicine degree can open up opportunities to work with various sports teams (high school, collegiate and professional) and in sports-related facilities. In addition, this degree provides appropriate credentials for teaching in higher education settings. EXPERT INSTRUCTORS Our expert instructors have extensive backgrounds in sports medicine and first-hand experience treating athletes of all levels. The science-based curriculum gives graduates the skills to work with athletes in a clinic setting or as a team physician. Graduates will also be eligible to sit for several credentialing exams. FIELD SPECIALIZATION Practicing clinicians need only complete 38 of the program s 60 quarter credits because prior education and clinic experience may be used as transfer credits. This allows most health care professionals to finish the degree in just a year and a half. This is a quick way to specialize in your field and start practicing more of the work you re most passionate about. HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE Hands-on training is emphasized in this program, along with current evidence and trends in sports medicine and research. An essential part of the program includes field experience working with local sports teams, multi-level athletes and at rehab clinics during labs and practicum. SAVE TIME AND MONEY Current chiropractic students enrolled in the sports medicine program save time and money because the curriculum overlaps with courses in our doctor of chiropractic program. This means students can finish the Master of Science degree coursework in less time because the credits are dually attributed.
11 IDEAL FOR Format length Tuition DC students and practicing clinicians hybrid 60 quarter credits $375 per credit MASTER OF SCIENCE SPORTS MEDICINE Ideal for current chiropractic students, chiropractic physicians or other practicing health care professionals who want to add value to their practice, this clinically-focused Master of Science in sports medicine program builds upon prior health care education and emphasizes evaluation, management, treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes. The program is delivered in a hybrid format, which means the majority of the classes are online and students will be required to attend labs at our Portland campus once per quarter. Because of the sports medicine program s hybrid format, students who are not concurrently enrolled in the UWS DC program will typically need to come to the UWS campus in Portland, Oregon once per quarter. Students should expect to spend two to three days on campus each visit. Careers this focused coursework can lead to or enhance are: Athletic coach strength and conditioning coach sports chiropractor performance enhancement specialist Sports medicine physician Professor
12 Program Format length credits Tuition graduate certificate online 6-9 months quarter credits $450 per credit GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Our graduate certificate programs are designed for those who are interested in completing graduatelevel coursework to specialize in their field, further their education or distinguish themselves in the industry. All certificate programs are 100 percent online and include four to six courses, allowing completion in under one year. Certificate programs consist of the same courses as our master s degree programs. Upon completion, participants of any certificate program may choose to finish the remaining coursework to earn a master s or a doctor of education degree. Sports Nutrition The graduate sports nutrition certificate consists of four courses designed specifically to prepare students to become a certified sports nutritionist (CISSN) through the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN). The CISSN is recognized as the premier certification backed by evidence-informed research in the field of sports nutrition and supplementation. In this program, students learn how to support body composition and physique changes for specific sports and positions, and optimize performance for endurance, power and speed. Positive Leadership and Administration Positive leadership applies the principles of positive psychology to the challenges in competitive sport environments and in the workplace. It is intended to help leaders and their teams or organizations succeed through a gained understanding of human motivations and behaviors (emphasizing strengths rather than limitations) and apply that understanding to achieve positive results in long-term motivation, functional effectiveness, efficient work processes, and optimal performance. Applied Sport Psychology Our curriculum has been approved by the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and taught by AASP Certified Consultants who are members of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Sport Psychology Registry. The curriculum was designed to fully address each of the 12 CC-AASP coursework competency areas to prepare you to become a recognized expert in the field.
13 STUDENT BENEFITS UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS AND PERKS FOR OUR SPORTS STUDENTS DISCOUNTS ON NASM EXAMS Our partnership with National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) allows UWS graduates to sit for several NASM exams at a lower cost, bypassing the lengthy prep course requirements. The exams included are corrective exercise specialist (CES), performance enhancement specialist (PES) and fitness nutrition specialist (FNS). ACCELERATED CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER COURSE UWS also offers an 80-hour accelerated certified personal trainer (CPT) course with NASM. Interactive discussion forums allow students with a diverse array of educational and professional backgrounds to learn from each other, as well as from assigned readings and lectures.
