3 Professional Development for Excellence in Women s Leadership Sk Day One Friday, 22 January Registration and Morning Coffee Official Welcome and Opening Remarks from the Chair OPENING KEYNOTE CASE STUDY Leading from the front How to cut through and make a difference It is well known that there is a vast disparity between the number of women in the legal profession and female representation at the partnership and senior leadership level. Combating this goes beyond being aware of and discussing the issue. Practical and influential action must be taken in order to enact change. Mai is leading the way and will share her experiences, perspectives and suggestions on: why being a woman is now a privileged status, and her top 10 tips for making a difference. Mai Chen Managing Partner Chen Palmer Public and Employment Law Specialists Questions and Discussion CASE STUDY My squiggly line career: perspectives gained en route When seeking to further their careers, women lawyers can face unique hurdles that have the potential to impede their progress. In many cases, women encounter similar challenges and can benefit from having strategies in place to overcome them. Katherine has a wealth of experience as a lawyer in both public and private law, and will share some of the insights she has gained throughout her career. Explore: Reflection on the challenges faced and lessons learnt throughout her law career Maintaining resilience in demanding circumstances Practical advice for aspiring female lawyers` Katherine Anderson Director, Legal and Risk Auckland Council Questions and Discussion Morning Tea INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION Navigating power relationships - Overcoming entrenched culture The legal sector is a field typically considered male dominant at the top level. Women continue to face resistance within the workplace as unconscious bias trickles down from above, spreading across the industry. Female leaders must master the ability to navigate through social, political and cultural obstacles to ensure productive and fulfilling work alongside diverse and often difficult personalities. Panellists will draw from their own experience as well as the audience to discuss a variety of topics, including: Leading with natural authority Overcoming and preventing unconscious bias Building relationships and the importance of a cohesive team Penny Sheerin Partner Chapman Tripp Jenni Rutter Partner Kensington Swan Laura O Gorman Partner Buddle Findlay Anne Callinan Partner, Head of Litigation, Auckland Simpson Grierson CASE STUDY The pathway to partnership: leadership lessons learned The legal profession is built on an assumed understanding of what strengths, capabilities and qualities are required for success. This culture however, is often accused of failing to accommodate for the unique leadership qualities possessed by women; such as the ability to interactively engage, foster growth and an innate sense of self awareness. Through identifying and refining these skills, leaders can embolden their presence and influence the workforce in a holistic and complete manner. Sally will discuss her leadership journey and the moments that refined her leadership approach, including: The importance of self-awareness in fostering the leaders of tomorrow Strategies to interactively engage and empower your team The Importance of self believe in achieving potential Sally Fitzgerald Partner Russell McVeagh Questions and Discussion Networking Lunch INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION Maximising your mentorship - Making a difference for future leaders Becoming a refined senior leader in the legal sector will inevitably involve the management of large and complex workforces. Successful leaders understand the necessary qualities and accountability of senior leadership, and are able to manage their own career while fostering potential within their teams, creating an efficient and resilient workforce. This interactive panel discussion will explore the different aspects of mentorship within the legal profession, as well as strategies for effectively promoting women into leadership positions. Panel members will discuss: Effective strategies for identifying and refining leadership potential within your team The importance and role of mentoring within the legal profession Techniques to influence and develop diverse teams Angela Stafford President Auckland Women Lawyers Association Mary Scholtens Queen s Counsel Stout Street Chambers Ann Brennan Chief Legal Advisor Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment CASE STUDY Tackling the dynamics of leadership - Managing change and challenges As you prepare to tackle the step up into leadership, one of the greatest and often unexpected challenges can be managing the change in responsibilities and expectations around the transition from a technical specialist into a generalist role. Managing an in-house legal team for over 15 years, Maureen has tracked her own development as leader against the different issues and dynamics of an internal PLUS TWO WORKSHOPS! The Women in Law Leadership Summit 2016 will provide an exceptional platform for women to share their experiences of overcoming challenges, seizing opportunities and reaching senior leadership positions. Practical advice and guidance will be given on issues including work / life balance, optimising your mentoring and networking relationships, high level communication skills and overcoming challenges to your progression. 5 Post Summit Workshop Saturday, 23 January Developing and Refining Resilience - Building the Strength for Long Term Success and Satisfaction As you progress your career in law, you will be faced with intense demands on your time and the pressures of handling increasingly complex and high-stakes matters. With increasing uncertainty, escalating demands and workloads it can be challenging to maintain high-performance and fulfil your potential as an effective leader.
