2 Oriënteringsprogram en amptelike begin van die akademiese jaar vir eerstejaarstudente Orientation programme and official start of the academic year for first-year students Pukwana ya Tlwaetšo le kamogelo semmušo ya baithuti ba pele ya ngwaga wa thuto 2016 Expectations of first-year students Verwagtinge van eerstejaarstudente The purpose of this social contract is to ensure that, as firstyear students entering the University of Pretoria, you will understand your responsibility for success in your studies within the context of the values and principles that underlie the University of Pretoria s approach to teaching and learning within a research-intensive university. You should 1. Take responsibility for your holistic experience as a student: Expect the University to be different from school; especially at a researchintensive university such as the University of Pretoria, you will be required to work independently and critically. Attend the academic orientation programme as a compulsory part of the academic year. Obtain the relevant calendar, think long and hard about your programme choice, obtain advice if necessary, register for your chosen programme and inform the University within the required timeframe if you wish to change programmes/modules. Seek to understand what is expected of you and how the University is prepared to support you in your endeavour to achieve your goals. Do independent research, develop an inquiring mind and do not be afraid to raise controversial issues in a responsible and respectful manner. Think about the strategies you use to learn, reflect on the learning process, identify what is working and what is not, and adapt appropriately. Reflect on what you are learning and how it is changing what you know, believe and can do. Inform the University should you have any disabilities that may require additional academic support. Use resources proactively and responsibly and follow up on advice or referrals, eg face-to-face contact with lecturers, clickup, the Internet, mentors, tutors, the library, student counselling and health services. 2. Apply yourself to your studies: Take full responsibility for your studies and set academic goals. Devote at least 40 hours a week to your studies, but more if that is what is required to be successful. Draw up an academic plan at the beginning of the year and revise it after the first test series. Remember that academic work comes first but should be complemented by social, cultural and sporting activities. Be open to and learn from a broad range of resources, experiences and environments. Attend all classes, tutorials and practical sessions and be prepared, pay attention and develop the confidence to interact in class. Obtain and study prescribed texts, recommended texts and other resources. Collaborate fully on academic projects when that is the expectation and do your share of the work. Participate in community engagement activities when they are part of the curriculum and begin to understand the challenges of South Africa as a developing nation and the social responsibility this demands from all citizens. Complete assignments and hand them in on time. Prepare well for assessments, inter alia through regular class attendance. Participate in academic support activities such as tutorials as an essential component of your academic work our best students all attend tutorials. Take the initiative in forming study groups. Master the full complement of the subject content, rather than relying only on previous papers when preparing for tests and examinations. Express a keen interest in all subjects and a willingness to explore them to the fullest instead of gaining just enough knowledge to pass the subject with the minimum mark of 50%. 3. Give considered feedback on teaching: Help lecturers to improve their teaching by completing feedback forms conscientiously, honestly and objectively. Give informal feedback to your lecturers or class representative on teaching, assessment and the use of technology. 4. Act ethically and professionally: Abide by University policies on racial and sexual harassment, South African legislation on hate speech, harassment, etc, and generally ascribe to a code of conduct that is underpinned by respect for diversity, tolerance, inclusivity, etc. Behave appropriately on campus, in class, in the library, in computer laboratories, online and in communities/ workplaces. Treat each other and staff members with respect. Dress appropriately in professional settings and during community engagement activities. Find and use information effectively, ethically and legally and ensure that all assessment is your own original work. Refrain from contravening the Copyright Act and abide by the University policy on plagiarism.

4 2 Oriënteringsprogram en amptelike begin van die akademiese jaar vir eerstejaarstudente Orientation programme and official start of the academic year for first-year students Pukwana ya Tlwaetšo le kamogelo semmušo ya baithuti ba pele ya ngwaga wa thuto 2016 Message from the Vice-Chancellor and Principal Boodskap van die Visekanselier en Rektor Molaetša go tšwa go Motlatšamokuanseliri le Hlogo Welcoming all our new first-year students to the University of Pretoria (UP) during Orientation Week is one of the events that I enjoy most in the life of the University. The excitement in the air and the sense of anticipation about the beginning of a new journey are intoxicating and energising for all of us. We, the leadership and staff of the University of Pretoria, believe that nothing can be more important to us than ensuring that our students realise their dreams and aspirations for the future. We are deeply invested in ensuring that you, our new first-year students, succeed not only in obtaining your degrees, but also in your career and life journey after completing your studies. Giving you a good start is what Orientation is all about. This is the reason why we begin our academic year for our new first-year students earlier than many other universities. The Orientation Programme is designed to ensure that our new first-year students are guided and assisted through the demanding transition from familiar school environments to the diverse challenges of life as a student in a large and dynamic university, where you will be expected to operate much more independently. This brochure contains important information and outlines the various activities in which you are expected to participate. To ensure that our offering remains relevant and up to date, we conduct annual assessments of Orientation among participants and use the findings to adapt and improve the programme and brochure on a continual basis, in accordance with the needs expressed by our students. Since we set high store by academic excellence, and expect the same from our students, Orientation focuses on academic matters such as the contents and requirements of the various academic programmes, choosing from the very wide range of academic courses on offer in our nine faculties, compiling timetables and accessing the academic, tutorial and learner support and assistance available to students. We also cover matters such as finding your way on UP s campuses, the various general support services available to students, including for example student health services and advice on managing your budget, student governance structures, leadership development initiatives and the wide range of student societies and arts, cultural and sporting activities on offer. Of course, Orientation is also about the opportunity to experience the stimulating diversity of our student community at UP. This is where you begin meeting new people, forming acquaintances and making new friends, and learning about the experiences and viewpoints of people from widely divergent backgrounds from all over South Africa and beyond our national borders. True to our belief that a sound education is a holistic one that not only provides academic qualifications but helps develop well-rounded individuals who will become responsible members of society, we are committed to equipping you with the necessary skills, not only for successful employment, but also to make a difference in your community, and to take up your role as the future leaders of our country. Welcome to the class of 2016! May you enjoy the exciting journey that lies ahead as a proud student of the University of Pretoria. Professor Cheryl de la Rey Vice-Chancellor and Principal
Termination of studies It is extremely important that you make good use of the opportunity you are being given to study. The dean of your faculty may, on the recommendation of the relevant faculty committee, cancel your registration during an academic year if you fail to comply with the minimum requirements as determined by the Faculty Board in respect of tests, examinations and any other academic work. You may then be excluded and prevented from continuing with your studies in the faculty of your choice. Only in exceptional cases may the dean be requested to reconsider the decision. Read and familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations applicable to your faculty as stipulated in the faculty s regulations and syllabi. PROGRAMME FOR REGISTRATION AND START OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR: 18 to 22 January 2016 Why is attendance essential? Every higher education institution starts the academic year with a special programme for new first-year students. This period may vary from one to three weeks, depending on what the institution wishes to achieve. At the University of Pretoria the orientation programme for new students lasts five days and is aimed at the following: familiarising students with the campus layout assisting students with their choice of course and/or field of study showing students how to compile and read their timetables giving students an idea of what happens in a typical lecture hall assisting students with their registration requirements, such as Grade 12 certificates or statements of symbols, preregistration tests, fees, etc. introducing students to campus life, the Student Representative Council (SRC) and its substructures helping new students to locate places where they should go for help in the event of any crisis. The programme for registration and start of the academic year includes the following: Academic orientation and registration programme The approved official programme for registration and start of the academic year 2016 has been designed to assist you with academic preparation, enabling you to make the adjustment from high school to university successfully. Academic literacy modules A student with high academic potential can have a low level of academic literacy, which may put his/her academic success at risk. The University of Pretoria therefore applies a variety of models to ensure that first-year students are equipped with the necessary academic literacy proficiencies. In some faculties all students have to attend academic literacy modules, while in other faculties, students are placed on a suitable academic literacy programme in accordance with their level of risk. In the Faculties of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Law, and Economic and Management Sciences, as well as in the School of Engineering, all students have to enrol for faculty-specific academic literacy modules. See the table that follows for the modules that apply to these students. In the Faculties of Theology and Education, and the School of Information Technology and the School for the Built Environment, students who obtained a 4 or lower for Afrikaans Home Language or English Home Language, or a 5 or lower for English First Additional Language, must enrol for facultyspecific academic literacy modules. See the table that follows for the modules that apply to these students.

Die hoofafdeling se opskrif is Being a UP student, en is in twee dele verdeel, naamlik akademiese steun en nieakademiese steun.

Congratulations on your matric results that enabled you to register at a university! Congratulations on choosing the University of Pretoria! And especially, congratulations on choosing the Faculty of Theology to shape your career. It is a decision you will never regret! The Faculty of Theology at UP is the oldest full-scale theology faculty in South Africa and did not develop from a seminary. This means that academic excellence has characterised us right from the beginning and even today our Faculty yields the greatest number of research outputs and recognised researchers. The Faculty of Theology is the smallest of all the faculties at UP in terms of numbers constituting not even 1,5% of the total number of students and lecturers, and yet our graduates and publications constitute almost 15% of the grand total at the University! Our Faculty s student house is hugely active in fact, it has won several prizes as the most active student house on campus. It unites students, not only socially, but also spiritually. In the Faculty of Theology we transcend boundaries and differences! Welcome to our world! Whether you have enrolled for the LLB, BA (Law) or BCom (Law) degree, we are proud to call you a law student at the University of Pretoria (UP). You will be exposed to committed lecturers who are experts in their fields, tutors, a well-equipped law library, and many opportunities to apply your acquired knowledge of the law Law House, the Moot Society, the Pretoria Student Law Review and the Legal Shebeen. Many law students are elected to the Student Representative Council in their later study years, or join the Constitutional Tribunal or the Student Disciplinary Advisory Panel. In your first year you will be exposed to questions such as: What is law? Where do we find law? Is there a difference between law and justice? What is the role of the law in addressing South Africa s pressing social problems? You will also be taught the origins and history of South African law, as well as the foundational principles of the law of persons and family law. Above all you should use the opportunities we provide to acquire as many skills as you may need to excel as a future lawyer: reading and writing skills, analytical and problem solving skills. Diarise the Faculty Festival that takes places in August and try out for the Kovsies First- Year Moot Court competition (which TuksLaw has proudly won many years in a row) in September. Attend lectures, ask questions, engage with fellow law students and lecturers, and make most of the privilege to study law at UP. Tuks of Niks! Tuks of Niks! Our students are confident leaders equipped with a superb set of educational and professional skills. Their skill set is, however, not their most important attribute as graduates of the Faculty of Education. Their inclination towards critical scholarship, their subject expertise, their fully engaged citizenship and high level of scientific literacy are the attributes that will enable them to make a difference in education. The Groenkloof Campus is home to more than undergraduate education students. Each year approximately 500 to 800 students graduate and enter the teaching profession. It is clear that education is a high priority in a country in which studies have shown that only 7% of matriculants enter public tertiary education, 12% enter other forms of further and higher education, 30% acquire a job and a total of 51% of the youth are unemployed. Education is clearly a priority. The Faculty of Education is ranked among the Top 150 in the World in the QS World University rankings and is rated as the top education faculty in South Africa on the basis of its number of NRF-rated researchers. The Faculty is internationally recognised for its academic reputation, for being an excellent employer and for its research citations. It is part of a network of local and international universities, including universities in the USA, China, Australia, Canada and Europe. The Faculty of Education is therefore extremely serious about its responsibility to deliver top-quality graduates for the education sector. We live in a time in which the ageold principles of effective education have become even more crucial to progress and development and our graduates are vital in promoting and applying these principles. Teaching is by far the most meaningful way to spend one s time and it is the shortest route to long-term success for any nation, community, family or individual. As a professional field, it is the sector in which one daily experiences that one can make a difference. In addition, education spans all the disciplines known to man. This is the sector that will make an impression on the lives of future doctors, engineers, accountants, lawyers, teachers, philosophers, artists, musicians, sport heroes, presidents and royalty. For this reason we have to seek excellence in everything we do. We believe that we as a Faculty have much to offer towards strengthening education in South Africa. We strive to facilitate access to education for students and to deliver inspirational, caring and expert teachers.
