1 Degrees Aviation }2014 } swinburne.edu.au
2 I chose to study aviation management, as not everyone can fly the big planes and I felt that there would be more employment opportunities in other roles. What I like most is that the course provides students with a sound understanding of the aviation industry, both locally and overseas, and also provides opportunities in many different areas in the industry. Brayden Bachelor of Aviation (Management)
3 }Prepare } your career for take-off Aviation is an evolving industry at the forefront of technology and business. Whether you re interested in flying commercial aircraft or managing operations on the ground, we offer courses that pave the way to a successful career. Flying courses Swinburne is the only university in Victoria offering bachelor degree-level flying courses. Commercial flying training is conducted at CAE Oxford Aviation Academy (COAA). Students will be trained to professional pilot standards. You will obtain your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and a Multi-engine Command Instrument Rating (MCIR), and be introduced to Multi Crew jet operations. COAA is the largest flying training organisation in Australia and is the provider of choice for cadet pilot training for Qantas, Jetstar and various Asian airlines. Swinburne has been delivering the Jetstar Ab Initio Cadet Program since Aviation management courses If you want to work in the aviation industry in management or operations, the Bachelor of Aviation (Management) could be right for you. Most aviation roles contribute to the industry without your feet leaving the ground, including airline and airport operations, technical management or roles within regulatory authorities. A course in aviation management can provide you with the technical knowledge and commercial skills to become an aviation manager of the future. Study a course reviewed by industry The Swinburne Aviation Industry Advisory Committee reviews content of undergraduate aviation courses and ensures that they are relevant to the changing needs of the industry. Committee members include senior executives from the aviation industry, within Australia and overseas. Undertake an honours year The Bachelor of Aviation (Honours) program is an additional (fourth) year following the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation (Management) degrees. It is designed to provide initial preparation for postgraduate study by research, with a focus on developing your research abilities and communication skills. You will require a credit average or above in stage three (usually third year) units. Add an international edge to your course Every two years eligible undergraduate students can participate in the aviation international study tour. The tour is a three- to four-week fully escorted tour visiting major aviation facilities around the world, including airports, airlines, aircraft and engine manufacturers, regulators, museums, fuel companies and aviation systems operations. The tour is an accredited unit of the course. Your interests: the airline industry flying management and safety. Possible careers: airport/airline management airworthiness inspector compliance officer flight crew flight dispatcher general aviation pilot network analyst safety analyst. 3
4 Studying aviation Swinburne s personalised approach to learning puts you at the heart of everything we do. Our aviation courses give you the skills you need not just the theory so you ll have first-hand knowledge of what s needed when you start work. Studying at university Degrees An aviation degree usually takes three years to complete (full-time). You will be required to complete 24 units of study, most of which will be in your primary area of study and become your major. Double degrees Completing a double degree is a great way to broaden your study experience. An aviation double degree usually takes four years to complete (full-time) and is highly respected by employers. These degrees combine two areas of study; for example: Bachelor of Aviation/Bachelor of Business Bachelor of Aviation (Management)/Bachelor of Business. Honours You may be able to pursue your undergraduate studies at an advanced level by completing an additional specialised honours (fourth) year. An honours year allows you to deepen your understanding in your major field and develop your research skills. Industry Engaged Learning As a Swinburne undergraduate degree student, there are many opportunities to extend your learning beyond the classroom and become better prepared for your career. Industry Engaged Learning programs allow you to engage directly with industry. You can take part in one or many, including: Industry-Based Learning (aviation management students only) Capstone Projects. Visit Careers in the Curriculum This free but compulsory unit for all students enrolled in an undergraduate degree will help you develop your career-planning skills. Create a personal study and career plan, and explore available job options. Visit University study skills Swinburne offers a program in advanced study skills to help you make a successful start to university, whether you are transitioning from school to university, progressing from vocational training to university or returning to study after a break. The Course in Tertiary Transition Skills provides a supportive and practical small-group environment, where you can familiarise yourself with the typical skills needed to best manage the pressures and challenges of degree-level study. Visit Credit transfer If you have been studying or completed a qualification at another Australian or international institution, you may be eligible to receive credit and enter a degree with advanced standing. To find out if you are eligible for credit transfer into the degree of your choice, phone to speak to an adviser. To find information about all Swinburne courses, visit 4
