3 About the 2015 Schools Program Welcome to a pop-up world of creative learning. This booklet is an invitation to explore the range of live arts experiences coming to your school in Between these pages sit ten unique performances and workshops that will entertain, educate and empower your students to create, change and question; experiences that will transform the everyday by creating pop-up worlds of imagination and inquiry. Akin to a vibrant and colourful festival, the range of experiences on offer in this program are diverse. In 2015, you can witness exquisite puppetry, demanding physical theatre, explosive dance and delightful music. Sometimes they draw from published scripts or children s literature. Sometimes they deal purely in imagination. But all are carefully selected to provide inspiring arts experiences from trusted theatre makers. Combine all of this with the skills of respected education experts, and you have a program that draws on themes and issues not only relevant to the curriculum, but to your students lives and interests. And just like that festival, there are a range of opportunities to build upon your live performance to make the most of this popup opportunity. Each of the performances are accompanied by useful and relevant Teacher Resources developed by esteemed educators. Why not make the most of a visit by the touring artists and further supplement your students learning with a masterclass? Experiences in the arts, while they might only pop up once or twice a term, can have incredible effects in developing critical thinking and empathy. They enable exploration, challenging perceptions and opening up worlds other than our own. They build communication and collaboration skills, while strengthening perseverance. 6 ARTSLINK QUEENSLAND AND BACKBONE YOUTH ARTS PRESENT An Experiment with Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett Two actors come onto the stage, and wait. What for, and why, remains one of the great theatrical riddles in history. The team behind An Experiment with The Caucasian Chalk Circle shift their witty, engaging approach to another great and difficult dramatist - Samuel Beckett. Waiting for Godot is one of the great plays of the twentieth century. But what s it all about? Who are Vladimir and Estragon? Why are they waiting? And where? The rewards of the play can be great, but understanding it is challenging. Fortunately, two actors have just seen a production, and they can t wait to describe it. If only they could agree on what they ve really seen... An Experiment with Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett puts the play s challenge to the audience in perspective for students, examining Beckett s playful and profound approach to our expectations, and the nature of theatre itself. Drawing clear lines to those Beckett has influenced, from David Bowie to Seinfeld, An Experiment with Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett is a careful illumination of exactly how great an impact the play had from the moment of its first performance to the present day, and how Beckett changed Western theatre forever. Zeal Theatre is charging back into schools with a high-octane reworking of their award-winning production, The Apology. When a year-nine excursion to the Boggo Road Gaol goes awry, Ray s dad encourages him to pick his moment and fight back. The Apology ricochets through a five year period where the bruises of bullying refuse to heal. 18 Animating Spaces Rewarding loyalty and investment in creative learning experiences. Animating Spaces is a multi-arts project produced by Artslink Queensland that revitalises and celebrates significant and unusual spaces in Queensland. Through locally driven arts activities and events, fifteen regional communities have the opportunity to re-imagine their town, employing local artists and producers to develop creative management skills through mentor-support and funding assistance. Since 2013, Animating Spaces has seen spaces in Cleveland, Hervey Bay, Toowoomba, Eudlo, Charters Towers, Yeppoon, Roma, Samford, Cooktown and Gladstone invigorated through the arts, reflecting the residents talents and aspirations. One of the things that is a big trend around the world now is animating spaces in the form of place making and that happens best when the community makes their own place something special; where they bring to life [through the arts] the things they value and they give the ordinary a feeling of something extraordinary, and Animating Spaces certainly did that. - Cr. Paul Bishop of Redlands City Council.
