The series of 5K runs and fitness walks raises significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer movement, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. 4 What is a Team? A team is a group of two or more participants who register under a common team name and commit to raise a minimum of $100 to help end breast cancer forever. Any company, family, group of friends, club, school or community organization can form a team. (**For fundraising prizes teams need to be 10 or more) Responsibilities: 1. Create your team (you must create your team name online before any other team members can join). Returning team captains must create a team for the current year. Team names are not guaranteed so the earlier you create the team the better your chances are of keeping the same name. Find helpful step-by-step instructions in the **How To Register Online Section** 2. Register yourself as a team member. See instructions at ** How To Register Online Section** 3. Maintain your team page and help motivate your team members. You are the liaison for your team! Assist your team members with registering and feel free to have them contact us with questions ( ) 4. Recruit people to join. Encourage online registration! It costs less and saves processing time. 5. Remember, set a team fundraising goal. We encourage teams to commit to raise at least $100. Team Captains are the number one reason members fundraise. Communicate Race information to your team keep everyone motivated! Important Tips for Team Captains: Encourage your team members to choose the option to have their packet mailed to them! If they are registering online or via paper registration, they can opt into the $5 mailing fee and have their packet mailed to their home. (This can keep them and you from having to wait in line at Packet Pick Up or Race Day) Deadline is October 3 rd. Team captains can choose to have their entire teams packets bundled together to make packet pick ups a much easier experience! The cut of date for this is October 3 rd. After that date team members will have to pick up their packets on an individual basis. Metro Rail passes are available for purchase through your online registration or paper registration form. Encourage your team members to car pool or take the Metro to the event! What We Provide: Participant materials for your team members. We ll have everything you need for your team member when you come to packet pick up. That includes official Race shirts and bibs (for all registrant); pins, donation forms, directions, and in memory or honor back signs. Team Captain tools which include fundraising suggestions and sample communications. We want you to have a great time while working hard to make your team successful. Instruct your team members to register online via Make sure your team members register under your team name. Provide them with instructions on how to get to the proper place on the website. Once your team members are registered hold a rally in your conference room or living room to help generate excitement and educate them on their responsibilities (i.e. asking for donations, recruiting more participants). Have your team members provide you with weekly reports on their progress. Don t forget to solicit for donations yourself. As the team captain you should set the tone. Besides your own family and friends, you should also contact your company vendors to support you and your team. 8 By participating in the Komen Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Race for the Cure, you have an opportunity to make a difference in the fight to end breast cancer. 10 STEPS TO RAISE $ Show your commitment and contribute to yourself $25 2. Ask your spouse/parent/family members to match your donation $75 3. Ask your co-workers to donate (5 co-workers for $5) $25 4. Ask a vendor/supplier from your company $50 5. Ask 5 friends to sponsor you for $5 each $25 6. Ask everyone in a club/organization (10 people for $10) $ Send out a letter to your holiday card mailing list $ Ask businesses that you visit often for a donation $40 9. Ask someone who has asked you for a donation $ Ask your boss for a company contribution $50 TOTAL $500 HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL TIPS TO HELP MAKE COLLECTING DONATIONS EASIER... Anyone is a potential donor. Ask people that you have daily contact with or who you ve established a relationship with in one way or another parents, friends, classmates, co-workers, neighbors, grocer, banker, mechanic, lawyer, dry cleaner, fellow parishioners, etc. Start with the person whom you think will give you the largest donation, which will establish a high baseline of giving. Ask your company about matching gifts. Many companies will match whatever amount each employee raises on his or her own. Tell your story to pledge supporters why you re walking/running for Komen. Collect your donations up front so you don t have to ask for them a second time. Ask at least 1 person per day to make a donation. Surveys show it takes an average of 8 asks to get a yes! Aim high ask for $50 and settle for $25, instead of asking for $25 and settling for $10. Base the amount you re asking for on your prospects ability to give. Carry your collection envelopes with you at all times. Self donate! It s as easy as donating $5 or $10 to yourself, upon registration. It will show others your one step closer to reaching your fundraising goal.

9 SERVE YOUR SWEET TOOTH DAYS Everyone loves homemade desserts and everyone likes to make them! Have a contest to judge the best chocolate chip cookie and have your CEO be the judge! Then sell all the entries to benefit your Race team! Example: If you had a bake sale with your office you could raise a few hundred dollars! CASUAL DAYS Ask your team members and other department representatives to collect a $5 fee from employees who would like to dress down on Fridays. The donations will benefit your Komen Race for the Cure Team! Example: If you held a Casual Day once a week till the race and 100 employees participated each week, you would raise $4,500! WATER COOLER DAYS Have employees gather around the water cooler to take a break and buy bagels, pizza slices or popcorn on certain days of the week. Or have a team member take up collections for coffee and then does a delivery run. You can charge a little extra since you are bringing it to them. Additional Tips Brainstorm with your team. Be creative and think of things that can involve the entire company. Advertise your participation as much as possible and JUST ASK PEOPLE! Too often people just don t know how to get involved. A poster on a bulletin board may not get noticed, so make sure your event information stands out. The more excitement you can create, the more people will want to be a part of it! If you are having fun, your co-workers will too! MORE IDEAS Concession stands at games and festivals Mini golf tournaments Rummage sales/garage sales Sell your office services, such as cubicle cleaning, filing, helping out with a major mailing, etc. Holiday gift wrapping service Have your team be babysitters for a month and advertise through your company s Sell single flowers on Friday Sell company T-shirts or sweatshirts Car washes Donation jars Goal board or thermometer showing the company s current fund raising status Pot luck lunches at work 9

Your progress meter will not show up on your page, but you can use the Get the Word Out feature to tell friends how you are doing and ask for support. 20 Do YOU tutu Susan G. for Komen? This year, to launch our 19th Annual Race for the Cure, we will be rolling out our Do You Tutu campaign. Celebrities and prominent community leaders are invited to participate by becoming one of our Tutu Ambassadors (by wearing a Tutu over their clothes for our Tutu photo shoot). This is a wonderful opportunity for them to come together and bring awareness to the impact breast cancer has on our community. Each year we are blown away by the outpouring of community support at Race for the Cure, as families, community groups and local businesses come together to honor the brave women who have passed, those who have survived, and those who are still battling breast cancer. Over the years we ve reveled at the unique ways participants show their solidarity and support. Some create their own team shirts, while others sport Komen pink from head to toe. But the most popular symbol of solidarity and support that we ve seen is the tutu! Large, small, pink, or the myriad of colors in the rainbow, it seems the tutu has become a symbol of hope. And you can say, we ve taken notice! Leading up to the Race, Tutu Ambassadors will be asked to participate in Tutu-themed events, such as, a Do You Tutu photo shoot, billboard reveal party, media interviews and breast cancer awareness events. Race Day will serve as the culmination of the Do You Tutu Campaign, where all our Tutu Ambassadors will wear their symbol of hope the tutu. With the help of these Tutu Ambassadors and all Race for the Cure supporters, we are truly saving lives. To become a Tutu Ambassador or have your company participate in a Tutu photo shoot, contact Madelyn Reus at madelyn@komenmiaftl.org.
