1 SWE HSV UVA SEAS PO BOX MCCORMICK RD CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA September 9, 2013 Dear Student, The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites you to apply for a place in our High School Visitation Program, taking place November 9 th The program gives young women a comprehensive look at engineering fields and at UVA s engineering curriculum through informative speakers and hands-on design activities. The program is designed to benefit participants with all levels of engineering experience. We particularly target those students who are not yet familiar with the field but may be interested in applying to engineering schools or pursuing an engineering career. The session for high school seniors will take place November 9 th, with an application postmark deadline of October 11 th. The application and selection criteria are included in this packet and can also be found on the UVA Society of Women Engineers website: Interested students may be selected to spend Saturday night (the 9 th ) in UVA dorms with freshman SWE members. There will be a non-refundable application fee of $20 with an additional program fee of $30 for those who are accepted, which will cover all costs and meals for the weekend. Acceptances will be sent out no later than October 25 st at 5pm, with commitment and second payment required by November 1 st. 2 WHY SHOULD I APPLY? High School Visitation is a day long, immersive learning experience at the picturesque engineering Grounds of the University of Virginia. Through a mix of student and faculty speakers, hands-on engineering design sessions, campus tours, and other fun activities, you will learn about the incredible opportunities available for women in the field of engineering while meeting fellow high school girls from all over the state. You will be closely interacting with current UVA engineering students throughout the entire day, so it s a great chance to learn more about the undergraduate experience and get advice on college applications. If you indicate interest on your application, you may be selected to spend the night in a UVA dormitory with one of our first-year female engineers. If you want to see UVA beyond the tour of Grounds, then High School Visitation is for you! Whether you ve always wanted to be an engineer or you ve never even considered it, we would love to have you at High School Visitation! Testimonials: - Thank you! STUDENT does hereby release and forever discharge and hold harmless the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), its directors, officers, employees, and volunteers, and their successors and assigns from any and all liability and claims, demands, rights of action, or actions, of whatever kind or nature, either in law or equity, which arise or may hereafter arise from the STUDENT s activities with SWE or from STUDENT s participation in High School Visitation and the activities related thereto. STUDENT understands and acknowledges that the execution of this Release discharges and will discharge SWE, its directors, officers, employees, volunteers and student leaders with respect to any bodily injuries, personal injuries, death, or property damage which may result from STUDENT s activities with SWE. STUDENT further understands that SWE accepts no responsibility for and is not obligated in any way to provide financial assistance or other assistance, including but not limited to medical, health, or disability insurance, in the event of injury, illness, death, or damage. 2. Medical Treatment. STUDENT does hereby further release and forever discharge SWE, its directors, officers, employees, and student leaders and volunteers from any claim whatsoever which arises or may hereafter arise on account of any first aid, treatment, lack of treatment, or service rendered in connection with the STUDENT s activities with SWE. 6 ESSAY PROMPT Respond to one of the two prompts below. Print your response on a separate sheet of paper (i.e. not on the back of another sheet in the application). Your name should appear on the upper right hand corner of the page, along with the number of the prompt to which you are responding. The essay should be 250 words maximum and must be typewritten (double spaced, size 12 font). Prompt 1: Why are you interested in learning about engineering, and what do you hope to gain from the High School Visitation experience? Prompt 2: What recent engineering feat, accomplishment, achievement, etc., is most impressive to you and why? How does it relate to your interests in engineering? ESSAY GUIDANCE Make sure you demonstrate a genuine interest in engineering or motivation to learn about it. Treat this as practice for your college applications. The language doesn t need to be extremely formal. Proper spelling and grammar is expected, but a conversational tone is appropriate. Quality over quantity should be your goal.
