1 Society for the Analysis of African American Public Health Issues 2015 Annual Meeting Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Michigan Room HEALTH IN ALL POLICIES October 31, 2015 Chicago, IL...if we believe that men have any personal rights at all as human beings, they have an absolute right to such measure of good health as society, and society alone, is able to give them. ~ Aristotle #SAAPHI15
2 Welcome! October 31, 2015 Dear Friends, On behalf of the Society for the Analysis of African American Public Health Issues, we welcome you to our 2015 Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium! We hope that you find this event informative and thought provoking. SAAPHI, a national, related organization of the American Public Health Association, is comprised of students, researchers, practitioners, physicians, and health advocates. Our mission is to provide leadership in the promotion of health and well-being across the African Diaspora through supporting research, student mentorship, professional development and policy advocacy. In the United States, racial and ethnic disparities are evident in almost all measures of health. The causes of these inequities are complex and often have their roots in social injustices. Thus, eliminating health disparities and promoting health equity requires a collaborative effort between science, practice, and policy. The theme of this year s meeting, Health in All Policies, reflects the need for teamwork across these entities in a concerted effort to address the policies that influence the social determinants of health. Today s sessions will engage you on a variety of topics related to health disparities that affect African Americans, including access to care; HIV/AIDS policy, advocacy, and interventions; and chronic disease risk and screening. We encourage you to interact with our speakers and your fellow attendees and seek out opportunities for networking and collaboration. In addition, we hope that you will consider joining us for other events taking place this weekend. We would like to express our deepest appreciation for the support and inspiration of Dr. William C. Jenkins, SAAPHI s founder, as well as our other senior members and advocates. Finally, we would like to thank you for participating in this year s event. Your continued support has made this event an annual success! Sincerely, Natasha A. Brown, PhD, MPH SAAPHI President
