2 THE OPPORTUNITY The Vice President for Enrollment Management will lead the University of Saint Joseph s recruitment, admissions, and enrollment program; build and implement a comprehensive admissions, financial aid, and retention strategy that consistently achieves enrollment goals for undergraduate and graduate students; and play a key role in developing integrated marketing and admissions plans that advance the University s mission and goals. THE UNIVERSITY Background Founded in 1932 as Saint Joseph College, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is a comprehensive institution with careerfocused undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs. Enhanced by the Catholic intellectual tradition and the values of its founding religious order, the Sisters of Mercy, USJ allows students to thrive in a culture of achievement and collaboration. USJ serves the needs of a diverse, intergenerational student body through liberal and professional schools at the undergraduate and graduate levels while maintaining a strong commitment to developing the potential of women. A faculty committed to outstanding teaching and scholarship with devotion to students is foremost among its institutional strengths. 2

3 THE UNIVERSITY (continued) There are more than 2,500 students who are diverse in terms of age and cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Approximately 860 students are in the undergraduate Women s Program, evenly divided between commuter and residential students. USJ s students excel in academics, place a high priority on community service, field successful sports teams and are enriched by co-curricular opportunities in the arts. In addition, the Graduate Program enrolls more than 1,580 full and part-time students and the Program for Adult Learners enrolls more than 170. USJ is home to five Schools: Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Natural Sciences, Graduate & Professional Studies, and Pharmacy. In addition, it operates two laboratory schools. One is the Gengras Center, a state-approved, private, special education facility for 120 children, which is in the early stages of a $10 million, 20,000 sq. ft. expansion to address the needs of children on the Autism spectrum. The other is the School for Young Children, a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited pre-school program for approximately 130 children. USJ s 84-acre main campus also features seven residence halls, McGovern Hall (student center), The O Connell Athletic Center, the Information Technology Network Center, The Pope Pius XII Library, and The Carol Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities which houses the University of Saint Joseph Art Gallery, the Hoffman Auditorium and the University Archives. In addition, there is a second campus in downtown Hartford that is home to the School of Pharmacy. West Hartford, which was named one of the Best Places to Live by Money magazine in 2012 and Family Circle magazine in 2013, is located near the Connecticut River midway between Boston and New York City and is part of New England s Knowledge Corridor Partnership. Hartford/Springfield is New England s most populous region after the Boston metropolitan area, with approximately 1.7 million residents and 100,000 university students. Hartford, Connecticut s state capital, and the surrounding areas are ideally located near other major cities, popular beaches and mountains. USJ is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and has specialized accreditation in numerous other programs. It is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as Master s Medium. 3

4 Mission The University of Saint Joseph, founded by the Sisters of Mercy in the Roman Catholic tradition, provides a rigorous liberal arts and professional education for a diverse student population while maintaining a strong commitment to developing the potential of women. The University is a community, which promotes the growth of the whole person in a caring environment that encourages strong ethical values, personal integrity and a sense of responsibility to the needs of society. Vision The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) will become recognized, regionally and nationally, for its programs in health care and community service. While building on the Catholic intellectual tradition and its Mercy social values, the undergraduate curriculum will be developed to prepare students as global citizens. For both graduate and undergraduate students, the educational experience will integrate spiritual and civic engagement with an understanding of social justice and opportunities to serve the community. USJ will sustain its mission to educate women and develop their leadership potential at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Additionally, men will be educated in adult and graduate programs. The University aspires to increase the size of its student populations, to further diversify its students and faculty, and also to expand its recruitment of international students. 4

Additionally, the intention is to reinforce our commitment to meeting the challenges of urban areas by establishing programs in Hartford and other city centers. As we develop and enhance professional programs, we will establish selective professional doctoral degree programs and master s degree programs that meet our mission and enhance student opportunities for career growth. INSTITUTIONAL LEADERSHIP President Pamela Trotman Reid, Ph.D., became the eighth President of the University of Saint Joseph in January, Since taking office she has worked to build upon the University s reputation for academic excellence and ensure its commitment to integrity, women s leadership, and service. She initiated and successfully launched the University s first professional doctoral program by creating a School of Pharmacy, a move that has garnered widespread acclaim from the Greater Hartford community. Under her leadership, the institution moved from college to university status; size of the graduate program in education tripled with the introduction of off-site classes throughout Connecticut; the program for adult learners was refocused; and undergraduate women s programs have gained increased recognition for excellence and student success. OFFICE OF ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT The Office of Enrollment Management encompasses the areas of Admissions, Financial Aid, and Marketing, Media & Communications. The Vice President for Enrollment Management provides direct leadership to the Director of Admissions, Director of Financial Aid, and the Associate Vice President for Marketing, Media and Communications, as well as to other administrators, staff, and faculty eager to achieve enrollment goals. In addition to the director, the Office of Admissions currently has an associate director, an information technology specialist and six counselors, all of whom are exempt. It also has two non-exempt support positions and three graduate assistants. The Student Financial Services area (Financial Aid) has three exempt employees in addition to the director two assistant directors and an office coordinator. The area of Marketing, Media and Communications includes an associate vice president, as well as a staff of six. 6

7 OFFICE OF ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT (continued) The Vice President for Enrollment Management reports directly to the President and is a member of the President s Cabinet. The vice president also sits on the University s Marketing Committee, along with the President and the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, and supports the Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees Gary Sherman, the previous Vice President for Enrollment Management, departed USJ in October of this year to assume the same position at Saint Mary s College of Maryland. Currently, there is an external interim serving until the new vice president assumes office. OPPORTUNITIES Major opportunities for the next Vice President for Enrollment Management include: Developing an emerging Enrollment Management division, which builds on current programs in admissions and financial aid; Providing leadership to assist in bridging traditional recruitment approaches with best practices and current demands to enroll new, transfer, and continuing students; balancing the financial needs of students with institutional resources; Enhancing the recruitment efforts for both graduate and professional programs, traditional and non-traditional students; matching enrollment goals to these program strengths and institutional capacities; Expanding the geographical recruitment of students; Working collaboratively with student services, athletics, and academic leadership in recruitment and retention efforts; identifying strengths in all areas that will attract students; Establishing international outreach programs to attract students from abroad; Producing a communication flow (in collaboration with the Office of Marketing, Media and Communications) that addresses concerns of students and families of those potential and enrolled students in women s programs, as well as in the coeducational adult, graduate, and professional programs; Collaborating in the development of a system to coordinate the delivery of enrollment management services to all students; considering a one stop shopping model; and Becoming a transparent model for open communication among all constituents. 7

8 QUALIFICATIONS The position requires a leader who possesses integrity, strategic vision, outstanding communication skills, marketing knowledge, excellent management skills (both people and resources), and an understanding of state-of-the-art approaches to enrollment management and program marketing. The ideal candidate will be committed to the University s mission, a decision-maker, energetic, entrepreneurial and collaborative, with substantial experience in admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, and marketing, as well as knowledge of best practices in higher education. In addition, the President and USJ community seek a Vice President for Enrollment Management who possesses: A Masters degree or higher with at least five years of progressively-responsible experience in higher education admissions, enrollment strategies, market research, financial aid, and student information systems; Analytic ability and experience with strategies using various media and current benchmarks for assessment; Demonstrated aptitude for developing and implementing cost-effective strategies; A strong understanding of, and commitment to, the use of current and emerging technologies, including social media, in the recruitment and admissions processes; Proven capacity to plan and implement complex, time-sensitive projects as well as broad strategic initiatives; and Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the values of the Sisters of Mercy: compassion, justice, integrity, service, and respect. 8
