INTRODUCTION TO THE SPH NON-DEGREE STUDENT PROGRAM 2

3 Thank yo for yor interest in registering as a non-degree stdent at the Boston University School of Pblic Health (BUSPH) for the spring 2016 semester. BUSPH welcomes pblic health professionals, Boston University employees, stdents who recently completed their ndergraate ecation, midcareer professionals, and others who are interested in the field of pblic health to explore and register for p to two non-degree corses at BUSPH. Non-degree stdents may enroll in a maximm of two corses at SPH. SPH and BU leadership have approved a revision to the MPH program that will be implemented in fall Stdents not seeking an MPH or other SPH degree will be minimally impacted by changes to the crriclm. Corses within yor area of interest and withot pre-reqisites will contine to be available. Stdents considering application to the MPH program fall of 2016 or later will be enrolled in the BU MPH. With this in mind, we recommend elective corses for the spring and smmer of 2016 that cold be applied to yor MPH if yo do choose to apply and are accepted. In most cases, at least for credits of electives may be applied to the revised program. The BU MPH will offer fnctional and context certificates. These sample corses have no pre-reqisites and are generally of interest to new stdents. Corses taken prior to admission cold be applied so long as they are relevant for the selected program and minimm grades were achieved. 4 is a US citizen or permanent resident or in a visa stats that allows part time stdy. SPH cannot sponsor a stdent for a stdent or scholar visa; those with existing visas shold work with International Stdents and Scholars Office at Boston University ( or ) prior to sbmitting a registration form. Stdents who are retrning in non-degree stats from a previos semester and have already completed two corses may petition Chris Paal, Director of Professional and Academic Services and Jonathan Cote, Director of Admissions to exceed the two-corse limit. The mst be sent to Chris at cpaal@b.e and inclde specific information as to the stdent s highest earned degree, his or her plan to enroll in an SPH degree program and the timeline for seeking admission. Stdents who are part of specific BU or Medical Camps programs mst inclde an of spport from their Program Director. Once registered, non-degree stdents mst meet the same academic standards and pay the same tition as degree candidates at BUSPH. In most cases, credits for corses sccessflly completed as a non-degree stdent at the School of Pblic Health will be atomatically applied towards a School of Pblic Health degree, as long as the corse meets a degree reqirement, is taken within five (5) years of yor admission to BUSPH and all minimm grade reqirements are met. Taking a class or two prior to the start of yor degree program at BUSPH is a great way of getting to know BUSPH and the Medical Camps. COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION Boston University establishes a nmber of reqirements for registration for all stdents. These reqirements are detailed at The SPH Registrar s Office is blocked from entering registration for any stdent who does not comply with University reqirements and cannot manally override this block to register stdents. If yo need assistance with compliance information, please talk with a staff member in the SPH Registrar s Office. NON-DEGREE STUDENT REGISTRATION PROCESS 1. As graate professionals, non-degree stdents at SPH shold careflly consider their registration prior to sbmitting a registration form. All stdents, inclding non-degree stdents, are expected to meet all pblished corse pre-reqisites in the schele at the end of this packet and shold contact the Registrar s Office if they have any qestions. Non-degree stdents are limited to registering for two SPH corses withot being officially enrolled in a degree program. These two corses may either be taken concrrently in the same semester or in two separate semesters. 2. Non-degree stdents mst sbmit the online registration form specifically for SPH non-degree stdents. Registration begins at 9:00 AM on Tesday, December 1. The registration form can be fond at Non-degree registration forms will be accepted ntil 5:00 on Monday, Janary 4, Receive and read confirmation from the School of Pblic Health Registrar's Office. 5 will be sent to the address sbmitted on yor non-degree registration form; please check this address freqently. 4. The cost per credit is $1,482. Non-degree stdents are not eligible for federal financial aid. It is best to ascertain how yo will pay for the tition and fees before yo register. Payment for new nondegree stdents is e by Monday, Febrary After receiving an registration confirmation from and before classes begin, new non-degree stdents are reqired to: a. obtain a Boston University identification card b. establish a Boston University address c. prchase corse textbooks and readers d. check their stdent accont and schele on the Stdent Link e. review the class Blackboard site f. find ot where the class is meeting by viewing the classroom listing on the SPH website at and sing the map on page 18 g. pay their bill before semester payment deadline h. obtain garage parking permit (if needed) 6. Non-degree stdents from previos semesters and non-degree stdents who are crrent employees of Boston University retain their established BU ID and address. 7. Pictre ID: A Boston University Pictre ID is the first item stdents withot a crrent Boston University affiliation shold obtain as they prepare for the fall semester. Boston University employees retain their employee ID and have it pdated for entry into the appropriate classroom bildings. The Pblic Safety Department at BU Medical Camps isses Identification / Access Control cards in room 102 at 710 Albany Street. Enter the Parking and Transcomm lobby and the ID Office is the first door on the left. Yo may obtain a badge Monday throgh Friday, 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 12:30 to 3:00. The office will be closed from 9:00 AM- 12:30. Stdents who fail to establish an address prior to the start of the semester may find themselves at a significant disadvantage. Nondegree stdents will receive an invitation to open their after they are registered. 9. Books and Materials: The reqired textbook and reader list will be posted in early Janary to the School of Pblic Health website at Textbooks and Corse Readers for School of Pblic Health corses may be prchased at the Boston University Bookstore, 660 Beacon Street, in Kenmore Sqare near the Charles River Camps. Stdents are expected to complete the class 1 assignments before the first class meeting. Pre-assignments are listed in the corse textbook and reader docment. 5

6 10. Classroom Assignments: Before the semester begins, classroom assignments are posted to the Stdent Link. A map of the Medical Camps is at the end of this packet. 11. Blackboard & the Stdent Link: Blackboard and the Stdent Link are two separate web-based systems sed by Boston University. a. The Stdent Link is a secre, official Boston University site that allows stdents online access to their registration activity, class scheles, grades, and stdent accont information. The schele yo see on the Stdent Link is yor crrent, official corse schele, and the amont e on yor stdent accont is accrately reflected within 24 hors of any registration change. Stdents access the stdent link with their Boston University login name and password at For example, a stdent with a Boston University of samsmith@b.e has a Boston University login of samsmith. b. Blackboard is a corse-specific online tool sed for dissemination of corse information and docments. Most SPH instrctors se this system to disseminate class notes, reqired and recommended reading assignments, homework assignments, and qizzes. Review to see if yor corse is listed as having a Blackboard site. It is important to note that the Blackboard system does not accrately reflect scheling information, and not all corses will se Blackboard. 12. Paying yor bill: The payment deadline for new non-degree stdents for fall is Monday, Febrary 1, Tition is e by the pblished deadlines, whether or not yo have received a paper invoice. Payments can be made online with a credit card on the Stdent Link once yo have opened yor Boston University address 13. Are yo a Boston University employee? Check yor eligibility for tition remission: Apply for tition remission after yo have registered and received yor registration confirmation. Be sre yo nderstand yor benefit and talk with Hman Resorces before registering. 6

Faclty members who wish to observe religios holidays will arrange for another faclty member to meet with their classes or for canceled classes to be rescheled. 8

9 TUITION AND FEES # Credits Cost 1 $1, $2, $4, $5, $7, $8, $10, $11, Payments are made to Boston University, Stdent Acconting Services, 881 Commonwealth Avene, Boston, MA 02215, Stdents mst also be aware that Stdent Acconting Services will assess late fees to all stdent acconts if they are npaid after the payment deadline. These fees are placed on the accont regardless of whether or not yo have received an accrate printed invoice from the University. If the stdent accont remains npaid, a hold may be placed on the stdent accont that blocks the stdent from tilizing many of the tools on the Stdent Link. HOW TO CHECK YOUR STUDENT ACCOUNT ON THE STUDENT LINK 1. Go to the Stdent Link at Select the green Money Matters tab and click on Stdent Accont Inqiry. 9

WITHDRAWING FROM BOSTON UNIVERSITY Withdrawing from the University means officially dropping ALL corses. Stdents who wish to withdraw mst complete a withdrawal/leave of absence form. 10

11 Lack of attendance withot notification does not constitte withdrawing from school. Classes and their associated charges will remain on yor stdent accont. There is no charge if the stdent follows the procere to withdraw and the withdrawal is processed by Friday, Janary 15. If a non-degree stdent withdraws from his or her only class on or after Tesday, Janary 19, then he or she will be charged according to the tition refnd schele. The withdrawal is effective on the date the form is received in the SPH Registrar s Office. The stdent s accont will be adjsted based pon the date of withdrawal. FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT - FERPA The Family Ecational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of a stdent s ecation records. In compliance with FERPA, Boston University does not disclose personally identifiable information contained in stdent ecation records, except as athorized by law. Stdents may restrict the disclosre of any item of Directory Information by indicating this restriction on the Personal Page on the Stdent Link, ( -> Personal tab -> Data Restriction option).
