3 WELCOME Dke Knshan s imep: Uniqely Joining Management and Pblic Policy in Global Environmental Leadership Message from Professor Jnjie Zhang, imep Director w One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job as director of the new international Master of Environmental Policy (imep) program at Dke Knshan is meeting with bright prospective stdents from arond the world who want to commit their talents to solving complex environmental problems. They wisely want to know what differentiates or program. A big part of my answer is or Knshan location, and this is why: The modern environmental movement toched off in the developed world decades ago in the 1960s as awareness grew abot the detrimental effects of indstrialization on natre, the economy, and hman health. Flash forward to today after a flrry of polltion control and conservation activity across the US and Erope and it is the emerging economies that are grappling with these isses, and where environmental policy experts can make the biggest difference. Perhaps nowhere is the challenge of balancing growth and environment more strongly felt than in China, which has emerged as the second-largest economy and the largest greenhose gas emitter. Located in one of China s most rapidly growing regions, the sccessfl manfactring center of Knshan provides a real-world laboratory for developing effective, evidence-based environmental policy soltions. Of corse, today we nderstand that one contry s environmental problems are not jst local in natre, and so or program reflects a global focs. The nations of the world are linked throgh or activities, like trade and investment, and also throgh or environment or atmosphere and or oceans. Developed contries import polltion-intensive goods from developing economies; coal brned in these contries contribtes to transbondary air polltion and global climate change. Demand is skyrocketing for policy analysts and environmental and bsiness managers who nderstand these isses, can recognize global and local opportnities for addressing them and help governments, bsinesses and nongovernmental organizations forge soltions. Prodcing this new generation of global environmental leaders is what the imep program at Dke Knshan is all abot. To captre the skills needed for this new cadre of leaders, the imep is the first of its kind to integrate core classes in pblic policy and environmental management and this is the distingishing factor that we are perhaps most prod of. To date, stdents interested in environmental policy have had to make a choice in their stdies: environmental programs focsed on management or policy programs centered on general analytical skills and pblic policy or they cold spend three to for years doing both. Instead, the imep program draws together the important core reqirements in each, spanning mltiple disciplines and professional fields. Combined with policy research opportnities, internships, professional development and an option to stdy at renowned Dke University in Drham, North Carolina, USA, the highly analytical imep program trains or gradates to serve as incbators of new ideas for policymaking and meeting environmental challenges where they are needed most. 23 ADMISSIONS Application Process Applicants to Dke Knshan University s gradate programs mst hold the eqivalent of a US bachelor s degree from an accredited instittion. In addition to the prereqisite bachelor s degree, the following are reqired: Completed online application form on Resme (less than 2 pages) Statement of prpose (500 1,000 words) At least two letters of recommendation (two academic references and one professional preferred) Transcript from each post-secondary instittion attended (an ploaded nofficial transcript with degree posted and other transcripts for all colleges and niversities attended) Official GRE score Official TOEFL score (minimm score of 90 reqired) or IELTS score (minimm score of 7.0 reqired)* Application fee (payable by credit card at the time of sbmission of the electronic application) We recommend stdents complete both basic statistics and microeconomics corses prior to enrollment *The program s langage of instrction is English, and written and spoken English proficiency is reqired. Stdents who are not native English speakers mst provide langage evalation test scores with their application materials.
