3 20 th MEETING OF THE EUROPEAN CONFEDERATION OF MEDITERRANEAN MYCOLOGY The 20 th CEMM Meeting is organised by the U.M.I.-affiliated association Associazione Micologica Eugubina in Gubbio, in the Italian region of Umbria aptly known as the green heart if Italy, a town which proudly preserves and promotes a great heritage that comes from its history, its traditions and its people. Gubbio is 510 metres above sea level and is set in the heart of the Gubbio-Gualdo Tadino district, surrounded by the spectacular Serra di Burano on the border between Umbria and the Marches and the spurs of the Umbria-Marches Appennines. Nature and environment are here to be enjoyed, and in this area there are places that are famous throughout the world, like the Corno Gorge, the Bottaccione Gorge, the delightful Valsorda and the natural park of Mount Cucco, which is a paradise of flowers, plants and wildlife. Gubbio Thousands of years old, important, prosperous. In brief, that is the history of Gubbio, set at the foot of Mount Ingino overlooking the plain where the first human settlements date back to the middle Palaeolithic age (around 100 thousand years before Christianity). The Eugubine Tablets are an extraordinary document showing how the Eugubine city-state was run and regulated (3rd-1 st century B.C.), describing the customs of a people whose social structure was even older. Ikuvium was a very important centre during Roman times and for this reason the town expanded into the plain. After being devastated and destroyed by the Barbarians, Gubbio first had a feudal government and then became a free commune. This autonomy came to an end in the second half of the fourteenth century when Gubbio came under the rule of the Dukedom of Urbino and the Montefeltro Lords. Many important buildings remain from that period, and in particular from the rule of the military Federico, buildings like the Ducal palace. A visit of the town, through its alleys and squares, to its churches and palaces makes it possible to relive its history and the values of its traditions. The quality of its buildings together with the presence of traditional arts and crafts (ceramics, wrought iron, wooden instrument making, restoration) show an intense and authentic connection with the past. Worth visiting in the old town centre is a series of great 14 th century buildings composed of the Consul's Palace, Palazzo Pretorio and Piazza Grande, a suspended square completed almost at the end of the 15 th century. At the higher part of the town there are the Ducal Palace and the Cathedral, next to the wide green expanse of the Ranghiasci Park. There are also important religious buildings like the church of San Francesco, built on the site of the house of the Spadalonga family who welcomed St. Francis when he ran away from Assisi, or the churches of San Giovanni, San Domenico, San Francesco della Pace, Santa Maria Nuova, San Pietro and Sant'Agostino. Further witnesses to the town's past are the Weavers' Gallery, the Bargello Palace and Fountain, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the tower of Porta Romana. There are also many buildings from different periods outside the town walls. Events that should not be missed include the Procession of the dead Christ (Good Friday), Gubbio Festival and the summer drama season with performances held at the Roman theatre (July/August), the town quarters' tournament (14 th August), the white truffle and local produce exhibition and market (October/November) and the biggest Christmas tree in the world (8 th December to 10 th January). Above all, don't miss the spectacular Ceri festival which has been held without interruption for more than 840 years every 15 th May, and the Crossbow competition (the last Sunday in May) between Gubbio and Sansepolcro, first documented in Umbria Umbria is the only peninsular Italian region that is landlocked, bordered by the Marches, Tuscany and Lazio; its total area covers 8,465 sq km, it has about 900,000 inhabitants and it is mainly hilly or mountainous. Only 10% of this region is flat and the plain is between 100 and 250m a.s.l.; 50% is made up

4 of hills below 800m, and 40% is mountainous, with an altitude of 1,000 to 2,400m above sea level. The river Tiber flows lengthwise through Umbria, from its northern tip to its southsoutheastern border, coursing through open valleys. Lake Trasimeno is in the north-western area of Umbria, while the river Nera, whose source is in the Sibillini mountains, flows in the south-east. The region presents a fairly equal division between natural landscape (woods, primary meadows, hydrophytic formations and rocks) and semi-natural landscape (shrubs, secondary meadows, reforestation) which make up 51% of the territory, whereas anthropical landscape (fields, olive groves, vines, built-up areas, quarries, dumping grounds, roads and railroads) constitute the remaining 49% of the region. Natural and semi-natural landscapes prevail along the mountain spurs and high hills of the Umbria-Marches Appennines, and are most spectacular in the Mount Cucco Regional Park (which was opened in 1995 and joins the other 5 Regional Parks of Subasio, Colfiorito, Nera, Tevere and Trasimeno), where a huge variety of flowers and plants, wildlife and geological features can be admired. Foray areas The foray areas are all within 20/30 minutes from Gubbio, and offer different kinds of biotypes. Participants must use their own transport to reach the foray areas. When the weather conditions are favourable, the woods in the plains and in the hills and mountains yield a generous fungi harvest, and in the wilderness expert gatherers can hope to find rare and interesting species which may be object of study for beginners, too. Rare or uncommon epigeous fungi like the Tricholosporum goniosperum, Tricholomella constricta, Boletus dupainii, Boletus lupini, Boletus rhodoxanthus, Gyrodon lividus and Leucopaxillus lepistoides have been found on our territory as well as a large variety of hypogean fungi, and forays will be organised both in the open countryside and on controlled truffle-grounds. We may also go as far as Lake Trasimeno, 45/50 minutes away, to explore different interesting biotypes. Mount Cucco Regional Park ( total area: 10,480 hectars; altitude: from 390 to 1,566m above sea level) Communes: Costacciaro, Fossato di Vico, Scheggia e Pascelupo, Sigillo Forays will be carried out with the assistance of the Università degli Uomini Originari, Costacciaro Valsorda, protected natural areas Valle della Rocchetta and the Fonno Gorge Commune: Gualdo Tadino Forays will be carried out with the assistance of the CAI (Italian mountaineering club) of Gualdo Tadino Gubbio, which presents various biotypes as it is the seventh most extensive commune in Italy If the weather conditions are favourable, we are sure the fungi harvest will give the participants great satisfaction.

You will also visit the cathedral of San Lorenzo and the fountain Fontana Maggiore. In the afternoon you can attend the opening cerimony of the famous chocolate festival 'Eurochocolate'

If you do not meet the registration deadline, the registration fee will be increased by 50%. If a participant withdraws his/her enrolment by 15 th June 2012, the sum of 100 euros will be withheld to cover the hotel's loss and the registration fee. If a participant withdraws his/her enrolment by 13 th September 2012, 50% of the hotel costs and the whole registration fee will be withheld. If you do not wish to stay in the hotel, you can pay the registration fee and a ' conference only' fee of 30 euros per day, which includes the day's forays, workshop and lunch.
