Have you or a loved one been in treatment before and found that it did not work? Overview Drug and alcohol addiction is a prevalent disease in the United States. It affects people of all ages, ethnicities, and incomes. Families that have watched loved ones battle with the stranglehold of addiction can attest to the power of this disastrous illness. The Owl s Nest Recovery Community is a place where the drug/ alcohol addicted can come to find healing, counsel, and above all: themselves. Located in Florence, South Carolina, the Owl s Nest follows a different path to recovery than most recovery centers. Unlike other facilities, the Owl s Nest does not rely on medical or psychiatric staff, but bases its program on properly applying the original twelve steps of the Alcoholics Anonymous program. Licensed as an instructor of Recovery Dynamics through the Kelly Foundation, The Owl s Nest is able to assist clients candidly because each of the staff has experienced addiction in their own lives. They know what it feels like to be in the battle of addiction and that unique perspective allows them to impart insight to those seeking freedom from addiction. The most commonly used phrase to describe the Owl s Nest is, by the addicted for the addicted. The Owl s Nest specializes in successfully working with those who chronically relapse. The Owl s Nest features an intensive, one-on-one 28 day program (with one of the highest success rates in America), as well as a 4 month program that provides vocational rehabilitation. Both programs focus on the twelve steps to recovery as suggested in the book of Alcoholics Anonymous. The Owl s Nest believes in the program and measures its success in a different manner than other recovery centers. Most recovery centers across America set a time-table for measuring success (example: staying sober for 90 days after leaving the
program equals success). The Owl s Nest measures its success rate by the number of participants that are currently still sober. Even with a more rigorous definition of success, the Owl s Nest maintains a success rate of nearly 9 times the national average. History A non-profit organization founded in 2001, the Owl s Nest was started to provide a successful alternative to the standard treatment of chemical dependency. Founder Steve Shaw attended 29 recovery centers without success during his battle for sobriety. He finally became sober by properly implementing the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous into his life. His experience and desire, to help families avoid guilt and shame, led him and his family to found the innovative recovery center that became known as the Owl s Nest. What began as a 12 bed men s facility, has blossomed into a 155 bed facility that accepts both men and women. With a success rate ranked in the top 5 on the east coast and 14th nationally by the Addiction Recovery Network, the Owl s Nest is a leading recovery community that is growing and thriving, unlike numerous other recovery centers and programs that have recently closed across the nation. In addition to its success, the Owl s Nest programs cost a fraction of the average national price for recovery centers. Philosophy The Owl s Nest believes that recovery stems from the lessons presented in the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The twelve steps (when properly applied) are a tried, true and tested formula for combating addiction. The twelve step program is much like a cooking recipe. Simply knowing the ingredients does not lead to success. Progress and eventual success comes from knowing how much to use of each ingredient and when to use it. The Owl s Nest strives not only to present the twelve steps, but also to help clients implement the program into their own lives. This philosophy has contributed tremendously to the Owl s Nest success rate. I was mentally and physically bankrupt when I received a brochure in jail about the Owl s Nest Recovery Community. Right then I made a life changing decision to seek recovery and today I have the ability to have healthy relationships with friends and family, but most importantly with God. - Lucas B
Your route to renewal... Programs The Owl s Nest offers 2 programs. The first is a 28 day and the second is a 4 month. Both programs follow the same curriculum and offer many of the same benefits such as room and board (men and women are housed in separate facilities), meal preparation (served in a dining hall), group sessions, and workshops. Currently, the Owl s Nest is one of the only recovery centers in the United States to offer both a 28 day and 4 month program. Twenty Eight Day The 28 day program at The Owl s Nest is an intensive study and application of the only time tested proven method of recovery from addiction, the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous as they are outlined in the Big Book. The 28 day program offers a more personalized course of implementation. Group sessions contain less people, which allow the staff to effectively present the curriculum in a shorter amount of time. At the Owl s Nest, clients are more than just a number. If a client feels they need more time, they are encouraged to remain with the Owl s Nest until they feel comfortable enough to return home. During the program, clients attend group sessions that encourage them to discuss their experiences and how they plan on achieving sobriety through the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The Owl s Nest staff provides unique insight and advice during these sessions based on their experience. In addition to group sessions, clients participate in workshops that provide education and insight into each of the twelve steps.
Four Month The Owl s Nest 4 month program implements the same curriculum as the 28 day, including the group sessions and workshops. Clients are housed and receive meals on campus and are encouraged to participate in activities outside of group sessions and workshops. In addition to presenting a path towards sobriety, the Owl s Nest provides vocational rehabilitation and employment opportunities to give clients a chance to adjust to their newly discovered mindset. Included in vocational rehabilitation are job search tools such as filling out applications properly, resume creation, and transportation to and from work/interviews. With tremendous alumni support, the Owl s Nest is able to locate various employment opportunities in the area for interested clients. Most of the staff at the Owl s Nest is made up of alumni from the program. They appreciate the solution that they found at the Owl s Nest and wanted an opportunity to share it with others. Of alcoholics who came to Alcoholics Anonymous and really tried, 50% got sober at once and remained that way: 25% sobered up after some relapses, and among the remainder, those who stayed on with Alcoholics Anonymous showed improvement. - published in the Second Edition of The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous Aftercare Upon successfully completing the primary program, clients are given the opportunity to move to a Transitional Living Center. The Transitional Living Center provides clients with a safe and secure environment that is less structured than the program they have completed. Clients receive support and encouragement from staff and other residents as they begin the process of independently implementing the twelve steps into their lives. In fact, the Owl s Nest takes its name from this type of support system.
Taking the first step... Admissions The process of admission to the Owl s Nest begins with a phone interview that is conducted by an Admissions Representative. During the interview, the Representative will examine and discuss the prospective client s substance abuse history as well as his/ her current situation. After that discussion, the Representative will fully explain the Owl s Nest s program to ensure that the prospective client is willing and able to participate. The Representative will then confirm that the prospective client will be able to assume the cost of the program via existing assets or assets that may be attained through employment. We were abandoned, hopeless, homeless, rejected, and a source of grief for our loved ones until the Owl s Nest changed our lives. - Owl s Nest Residents Referrals Alcohol and drug addiction does not just affect the user. It affects families, friends, children, and communities. If you or someone you know is battling with the illness of addiction, please seek help. If you are near a computer, please visit for more information. The Owl s Nest exists to give those with alcohol and drug addiction the chance for a new life by providing them with the tools and processes to achieve lifetime sobriety. The Owl s Nest specializes in helping people who have tried other options to fight dependency. The proper implementation of the twelve steps is the key to being recovered from the illness of dependency. Experience the reason why the Owl s Nest ranks so high among recovery centers. Regain control of your life and overcome addiction once and for all.
Testimonials Within an hour and a half of my arrival at The Owl s Nest, I had the answers to questions that had perplexed me for 32 years. Questions like: What is wrong with me? and Why am I different from other people? I was in a house full of other people that had asked the same questions and found the answers. Not only the answers, but also the solution. Today, I have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. I am once again a productive member of society and am dependable and depended upon. I have a purpose in life now, and that purpose is to share with the alcoholic that is still suffering, that which was so freely given to me: hope. -James H. Atlanta, GA I was a sixth-grade school teacher and did not understand what was wrong with me. I lost everything including my family, so I tried everything I could to stop drinking and taking drugs. I thought I was destined to die that way until I ended up at another detox center and was given the phone number to The Owl s Nest Recovery Community. Never in my wildest dreams did I think my life would change the way it has. Now everything I lost has been restored and I am truly happy, joyous, and free. -Hope W. Florence, SC
