It s no secret: the misuse of alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and illegal drugs even food as well as other forms of compulsive behavior, often cause serious problems for individuals and their family members alike. Lesser known is how every year a growing number of older adults are hospitalized for adverse drug reactions and/or serious mental health problems due to prescription medications. Are there risk factors to watch for? Yes. Sons of alcoholic fathers are four times more likely to become alcoholics than sons of non-alcoholic fathers, and daughters of alcoholic mothers are three times more likely to become alcoholics than non-alcoholic daughters. One-third of food addicts are addicted to alcohol or other drugs, and one-third of cocaine addicts are anorexic or bulemic. And of course, the most common form of food addiction is compulsive overeating. A majority of adults who are separated and divorced have an alcoholic family member. Women with past experiences of low self-esteem, guilt or shame have difficulty establishing and maintaining close relationships, and also have poor parenting skills. The Counseling Center can help. If you or your family is afflicted with these and similar problems, I urge you to call us today. We have proven effective ways of healing the hurt, stopping the pain, and finding long-term solutions. 5 4486 HCH Counseling Brochure Inside pg9.qxp 6/10/05 4:15 PM Page 1 Ambulatory Detox This program is an outpatient, medicallymonitored detox from drugs or alcohol. It is designed to avoid and prevent potentially dangerous medical and behavioral consequences due to the discontinuation of drugs of dependence, offered to individuals who are at low-risk for seizures, DTs, and other medical complications. This is accomplished by attending the day Intensive Outpatient Program so that the medication prescribed by the department physician can be adjusted and monitored to ease physical discomfort.
4486 HCH Counseling Brochure Inside pg8.qxp 6/10/05 4:14 PM Page 1 Adult Programs Individualized treatment options, including a choice of two intensive programs (day or evening), aftercare, one-on-one counseling provided by a certified addiction specialist, or referral to another level of treatment, if indicated. All programs focus on developing a strong personal foundation of coping skills, behaviors, and problemsolving techniques to achieve continuing sobriety and to prevent relapse. Individuals also receive the education and support they need to accept responsibility for the consequences of their alcohol and/or drug use.
4486 HCH Counseling Brochure Inside pg7.qxp 6/10/05 4:13 PM Page 1 Family Support & Recovery Every member of the family is impacted by an alcohol abuser, alcoholic or drug user. To help the children and adults in the immediate family, the following services are available: Family Intervention A program to help an individual recognize his or her alcohol and/or drug problem and receive treatment. Family Counseling An experienced family therapist offers individual counseling to each member of the family in addition to counseling for the entire family. Family Education A weekly two-hour program combining lecture and discussion to help families understand addiction and improve their quality of life. Open to family, friends and the individual in recovery.
4486 HCH Counseling Brochure Inside pg6.qxp 6/10/05 4:12 PM Page 1 Intervention Services A program for family and close friends of individuals who are alcoholics and/or drug abusers. Intervention services provide family members and friends with the information, education, tools and skills to help an individual face his or her addiction and receive treatment. The program includes three visits with a certified counselor. During the first two hourly visits, individuals participating in the intervention learn about alcohol and drug abuse and addiction, how the addiction impacts the family, how family members prepare for the intervention, and the options available to help someone with an alcohol or drug problem. Each step of the way, family members have the option to stop the intervention or continue to the final step, which is the intervention itself. The intervention takes place with the substance abuser and results in admission to one of our outpatient programs or appropriate level of treatment.
4486 HCH Counseling Brochure Inside pg5.qxp 6/10/05 4:11 PM Page 1 Education Programs Our goal is to promote an understanding of alcoholism/addiction as a disease with severe consequences if not treated. Alcohol and/or drug abuse may lead to addiction. To educate alcohol and drug abusers and to prevent the misuse of legal and illegal substances, the following services are offered: Speakers Bureau Professional counseling staff willing to speak to groups, lead workshops for organizations, develop training seminars for professionals on topics relating to compulsive behaviors, and alcohol, prescription and illegal drug abuse. Medication Awareness A two-hour seminar for mature adults about the risks of taking prescription and over-the-counter medications, mixing medications or drinking alcohol with medications. Education/Early Intervention A series of eight hourly lectures to provide the adolescent and parent the necessary information to make healthy lifestyle choices. Random urine drug screens are part of this program. Intoxicated Driver Resource Program A series of sixteen sessions designed to meet the legal requirements for individuals who have a D.W.I. violation.
4486 HCH Counseling Brochure Inside pg4.qxp 6/10/05 4:09 PM Page 1 Adolescent Programs Programs developed to meet the needs of individuals age 13 to 19 who have problems created by the use, or abuse, of alcohol and/or drugs. Adolescents who are using or abusing mood-altering substances will be referred to an early intervention program to stop the progression of the disease. Adolescents who are dependent will enter the day program offered Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This includes 10 hours of direct education provided by a teacher and coordinated with the referring school district, and 20 hours of drug and alcohol counseling weekly. Family therapy is included in this program. Random drug and alcohol testing is done to monitor compliance. Treatment includes learning a repertoire of interpersonal behavioral skills, increased selfawareness and self-worth, an understanding of addiction and the recovery process, and skills that support independent thinking and behavior. Level of service is decreased as the adolescent progresses in recovery. Adolescents complete treatment by attending a weekly aftercare program.
