2 Why is this Nordic Latin American Contact Seminar important? 3 reasons: 1. International visibility: To give exposure to our academic institutions. 2. Institutional Vision: We need a strategy of Internationalization for our institutions (increasing our visibility at an international level) 3. Economic terms: More financial resources (via tuition fees or European funds: Erasmus + Program, Horizon 2020, European Research Council, etc.)

3 1. International visibility: Challenges: - To introduce the Nordic countries in Latin America. - The Nordic countries are not yet of great relevance in Latin American countries. Frequency of results featuring EU countries in searches within Latin America and Caribbean countries: 1. Spain 2. France 3. Italy 4. Germany 5. United Kingdom 6. Netherlands 7. Portugal 8. Belgium 9. Austria 10. Sweden 13. Denmark 14. Finland

Panama Conclusion: This seminar provides an opportunity to our universities, research centers and institutes to become better known, as well as to achieve closer ties with Colombia and Peru.

Institutional Vision: A strategy of Internationalization for our institutions (increasing their visibility at an international level) Challenges: Today,, due to increasing globalisation, our universities receive a proportionally smaller amount of national students. Our governments have invested resources into our institutions and created more academic and research centers. But we are relatively few academics and researchers. The world is increasingly globalised; therefore, our research projects and academic programs should be designed with a global vision. Conclusion: For this, we need international partners. Colombia and Peru are the partners we need.

Economic terms Latin America in economic terms: According to the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Inter-American Development Bank, the European Union, etc. - Several countries have become middle-income countries and are on their way to being developed fully economies. - By 2020, the economies of emerging countries will represent 53% of the world s GDP. The following major economies will grow substantially: Brazil (11 612) Russia (12 735) India (1630) China (7593) South Africa (6 478) + Indonesia (3 514) South Korea (27 970)

7 By 2020, the amount of economic activity from the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America will mean 60% By 2020 South-South exports will surpass North-North exports. By 2020: 50% of the flow of foreign direct investment will be in developing countries. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is an organization with 34 countries; its mission is to promote policies to improve the economic and social welfare of people throughout the world. These countries have come to define international policy cooperation in the world. In 2021 OECD will have 5 Latin American countries among its members, including: Chile Mexico Brazil Colombia Peru

8 Inter-American Development Bank forecast in 2025: 7 Latin American countries will be development countries, with a GDP per capita of at least U.S. $ Argentina 2. Brazil 3. Chile 4. Colombia 5. Mexico 6. Peru 7. Uruguay

9 European Union Multiannual Indicative Regional Programme for Latin America is EUR 925 million. Exchanges and cooperation in the field of higher education: Indicative allocation of EUR 163 million. General purpose: - Promote exchanges and cooperation in the field of Higher Education between the EU and Latin America. Specific objectives: - Supporting the mobility arrangements for teching both staff and students of institutions of higher education. Enhance cooperation for innovation and exchange of good practices between the EU and Latin America. Specific activities: - Strategic partnerships and alliances in knowledge.

10 Lines of Action (under the Erasmus + program for the period ): Support for the mobility of people for learning purposes. Activities. Concrete: To achieve mobility of staff and students. To enhance cooperation for innovation and exchange of good practices between the EU and Latin America. Specific activities: - Strategic partnerships and alliances in areas of higher knowledge.

11 Nordic Countries- Latin America countries 118 programs are approved by the European Commission as Master Erasmus Plus. 60 of these are located in three Nordic countries: Sweden, Norway and Finland. Sweden participates in 42 master's programs, Norway in 13 and Finland in 5 programs. In the case of Latin America, there is active participation from 5 countries: Brazil (12 universities) Mexico (two universities) Ecuador (two universities) Colombia (2 universities) Peru (1 University) Together, these 20 countries are participating in Erasmus Mundus Masters programs.

12 PERU Peru has 28 of which are public and 37 private = 65 universities Areas of knowledge 1. 13 COLOMBIA Colombia has 81 public and 207 private universities = 288 universities Areas of Knowledge: 1. Social Sciences, Behavioral, Communication, Service, Labour and Law Engineering, Technology, Industry, Architecture and Construction Health Sciences and Social Services Life Sciences, Earth, Space, Chemical, Physical and Exact Education Arts and humanities Services: Tourism, Hospitality, Sports, Beauty, Transportation, Environment and Safety Agronomy, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary 209

14 TIPS: - Don t go directly to the items on the agenda. - Draw up a work schedule, but not too long-term. - For a work meeting, reserve at least 30 minutes or an hour - Accept meetings outside working hours; many times, it s during lunch, dinner, or at a drink after work, where progress made in negotiations and where agreements are signed.

15 Conclusions: This seminar gives us the opportunity to design and elaborate a strategy of internationalization for our universities. This seminar is a good opportunity for a joint collaboration between the Nordic countries. Latin America is a region of opportunity: Colombia and Peru are good partners to give visibility to our academic institutions, as well as to create and implement a strategy of internationalization. They also represent an opportunity to obtain greater financial resources.
