16 Bachelor of Computer Science Computer scientists are behind many of the solutions to the world s greatest information challenges. They drive cutting-edge developments in bioinformatics, intelligent systems and networking; they break new scientific ground with sophisticated data analysis methods; they advance medical research with new ways of predicting drug function and interpreting genetic information; they make the web manageable with powerful search engines; make entertainment more exciting with ever-improving animation and gaming technologies; and they make the digital world safer through new encryption and security systems. Chantel Garcia Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (2012) After completing her first IT degree, Chantel decided to continue her studies and create her own double degree. I chose to study the degree after taking a unit in Computer Science as an elective in the last year of my Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems degree. I fell in love with the more technical orientation of the degree and decided that it was for me as I was looking to eventually work within this area. The most attractive features of the course were the in-depth algorithmic units, which are known to be notoriously difficult, but also help students to become more well-rounded programmers. What is fundamentally unique about this course is that it is very hands-on, unlike similar courses at other universities around Melbourne. The course has definitely delivered so far, as I have noticed the improvement in my programming capabilities, and have been able to attain a number of internships in the industry due to my new-found knowledge. 16 Bachelor of Computer Science

17 Major units of study for specialisation You can use your electives to complete a major in: Systems development If you want to focus on the engineering aspects of IT, this major combines technological topics, including computer architecture and networking, with basic training in software engineering. These systems deliver innovative IT techniques to model organisations and the impact of alternative choices on the quality of the organisation s service delivery and operational costs. Applications include strategic planning, market analysis, resource allocation, and scheduling. These are key business concerns for your future employers. Computational science Only computational analysis and visualisation allow us to study the vast amounts of data contemporary science uses. Simulations enable us to perform virtual experiments that are too dangerous, too difficult, or too costly to perform in reality. They even enable us to explore hypothetical worlds. This makes computational science a key component of all modern science and engineering, and a very attractive skill in the job market. 20 Bachelor of Software Engineering One challenge in delivering useful IT systems is that the software is too large for a single person to produce. This means that teams of people have to work together to produce robust, efficient software. How should that software production process be run? How do you ensure that when you put all the pieces together the software works every time, as software in a heart pace-maker must; and works in real time, as the brakes in your car must? Software engineering addresses these questions. Software engineering covers the technical aspects of building software systems, the tools and methods for software design, coding and testing. It also deals with team work, planning and scheduling. Software engineers do need strong technical and programming skills, as they are primarily team players. Bevan Forbes Bachelor of Software Engineering Consultant, Fraud and Forensics PwC In my job, every client has a different computing environment, so I have to adapt to that, to enable analysis and extraction of the data needed. In my role, I ve had the opportunity to work on some high profile projects and love seeing the impact that my work has on the world. My software engineering course at Monash gave me the technical skills I need, by exposing me to a wide range of IT technologies. In our final year industry project, my team worked on a mobile app for a government department, where we were exposed to a real-world client and deadlines, and saw how our software had a real impact on people. 20 Bachelor of Software Enginerring
