2 Inadequacies in Standard VFD Cables: EMC-Electro Magnetic Compatibility Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the ability of a device, product, or system to operate properly in its intended electromagnetic environment, without degradation and without being a source of interference. Common-mode Current or Stray Current Current that is electrically or magnetically induced into the grounding system or other non-intentional conductors. Common-mode currents are those which flow on all intentional conductors in the same direction and return via some external path such as ground paths. Stray current is an electric current that takes a path other than the intended path and can lead to leakage. Corona Inception Voltage (CIV) and Partial Discharge: The electrical stress voltage will exceed the breakdown voltage of the air and a partial discharge will occur. Successive partial discharges will degrade the insulation slowly. The voltage will ionize the surrounding air and lead to arcing across the wires (a process known as corona or corona discharge). When the voltage is greater than the wire insulation it causes dielectric stress and eventual insulation failure. The ServiceDrive Solution: EMC ServiceDrive ASD/VFD Cable System is an electromagnetic compatible product. It reduces or prevents interference between other equipment and the cable when installed in proximity of low- level communications cable or other susceptible devices. Common-mode Current /Stray Current A transient current from motor lead wire and motor stator winding to ground is produced at every output voltage edge. This is the commonmode current. The common-mode current flows in the complete ground grid, producing high frequency ground voltage potentials across different ground points. Susceptible equipment connected to this ground potential may malfunction. Containing common-mode current begins with good grounding and bonding practices. ServiceDrive s Shielded Cable provides good wiring practice with noise control and reduces the effect of common-mode current. ServiceDrive Shielded Cable returns the common-mode current to the drive and provides better wiring practices with no contact to building ground. If Shielded Cable is not used on input, then the common-mode current path may get a path back to the ground and transformer. Corona Discharge ServiceDrive was designed to address the voltage peak occurrences in the cable due to reflected wave. ServiceDrive ASD/VFD Cable System has XLP insulation. XLP is a thermoset (a material that is vulcanized by heat and is substantially infusible and insoluble) which tends to maintain its form at operating temperatures. The singles in ServiceDrive Cables are insulated with XHHW-2 (cross linked polyethylene) and has the capability to withstand high temperatures and voltage peaks of 1665 to 1800 volts that occur due to corona discharge. The corona discharge occurring between conductors can reach very high temperatures. If the insulation is plastic material, such as PVC, corona inception can cause premature failure due to gradual localized melting of insulation. Crosstalk Crosstalk is the coupling of energy from one cable line to another interfering in each other s activities. Crosstalk The ServiceDrive s galvanized interlocked armor has the electrical field containment and rejection properties that reduce the effect of crosstalk. 3 Why should ServiceDrive cable system be used over standard products? Modern AC variable speed motor drives employ a method of motor control called PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). Basically a VFD takes incoming AC (60Hz) main power, converts it to DC, and then converts (or inverts) the DC back to AC, but with a variable or adjustable frequency. It uses newer technology semiconducting power switching devices known as IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) that are capable of faster switching speeds than those of the older SCRs (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers) employed in DC controllers. Compared to the older DC drives, PWM controllers enable reduced size, improvements in operating efficiency and tighter control of the motor s speed and torque. As with any different technology, there are new aspects and considerations that must be incorporated in the design and installation process. The three main considerations are: Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) High Ground Currents Reflected Waves The higher switching speeds of the IGBTs inherently generate more EMI that inevitably gets radiated into the environment by the inverter-to-motor power cable. The EMI emitted from the power cable can induce voltages, currents or crosstalk on adjacent cables, which is potentially dangerous to equipment and personnel. The risk of failure or malfunction in automated plants is also considerably increased. The presence of the system operating frequency (60Hz), the frequency of the PWM carrier (800 to 3.5kHz), the PWM pulse switching time and harmonics from all three, induce currents on the ground plane. In some situations all these currents may not add up to zero in the cable, and thus a common mode current enters the system with its return path to the inverter not necessarily through devices that were designed to carry current (motor bearing damage is typical). Common mode currents can cause havoc with control systems and mechanical parts, hampering reliability and performance. The third consideration is that of reflected waves. Whenever a signal travels down a cable and hits a sudden increase in impedance (e.g.: motor terminations), part of the signal will be reflected back up the cable. The reflected wave will add and subtract to other signals along the cable, giving rise to standing voltages often in excess of three times the system voltage. These high voltage spikes can quickly destroy cables that are not designed to withstand this sort of abuse. The ServiceDrive ASD/VFD Cable systems are designed to: Reduce EMI emission from the cable. Reliably withstand the high voltage spikes. A heavy-duty copper tape screen is applied over the entire core assembly to offer a very high level of EMI screening. Multiple earths are placed in all interstices under tight manufacturing tolerances so that the effective distance from all phases to earth (affects the phase impedance) is identical, thus producing an electrically balanced cable. Additionally the earth sizes combined with the screen offer a higher than normal earth conductor size, offering a very low earth return impedance which helps to minimize common mode currents. Materials used in the construction of these cables are also specifically selected to provide the highest level of reliability and safety. (XLPE) cross-linked polyethylene is used for the insulation, due to its tolerance to high voltage spikes, superior overall electrical performance to PVC, and improved high temperature characteristics. 1

14 ServiceDrive Plus is manufactured with EnviroPlus Low Smoke, Zero Halogen Jacket over the cable instead of PVC. EnviroPlus is a Polyolefin Jacket made from a non-halogen, highly flame retardant, thermoplastic, low smoke, low corrosive and low toxic compound. An EnviroPlus jacket is lead free, halogen free, and has limited smoke generation with following characteristics: EnviroPlus contains hydrated mineral flame retardant fillers in place of Halogens It decomposes endo-thermically to form a metal oxide that forms a char or barrier layer that maintains physical integrity and prevents flame propagation. This also inhibits flowing or dripping. Smoke from zero-halogen cable is less dense and white, allowing for more visibility. Cables with EnviroPlus jackets are group 1 rated cable and have fire propagation index of 10 in absence of direct flame the cable will stop burning. Halogens like chlorine and fluorine highly reactive elements are widely used in jacketing material like PVC, CPE, Hypolone or Neoprene. These chemicals when combined with moisture (from the fire-suppression systems) can generate corrosive acids like HCL or vision impairing smoke. These acids can cause more damage to systems than the original fire. Smoke is the leading cause of death in most fires. Limited smoke generation allows extra time to exit the building before smoke overwhelms the occupants. Cables with EnviroPlus jackets can take up to 20 minutes of continuous flame before reaching the same level of total smoke generation achieved within the first minute of flame with a CPE cable. Service Wire was the original manufacturer of a full wall, Low Smoke, Zero Halogen LSZH cable. We developed and manufactured EnviroPlus jacket over ten years ago for general purpose cable jacket applications that can meet the IEEE-383/UL-1581/ UL-1685 (Limited Smoke Test) vertical tray cable burn tests. Please visit the link below to see EnviroPlus cable performance during these burn tests: Polyolefin jackets can be used on cables operating at up to 90 C to replace PVC, low smoke PVC, and halogenated rubbers due to its excellent fire safety characteristics: Highly flame retardant (IEEE 383 flame test rating) Environmentally friendly (lead-free, halogen-free, sulfur/antimony-free) Low smoke, low corrosivity, and low toxicity Excellent cut-through, crush, and abrasion resistance Good UV, moisture and fluid resistance Good balance of toughness and flexibility Track and erosion resistant This compound meets or exceeds many industry jacket specifications: UL-1072 Medium Voltage Power Cable, UL-1277 Tray Cable, UL Subject 444 for general purpose communication cable, mass transit applications, IEC 332 requirements 12

15 COMPARISION EnviroPlus CSPE CPE PVC Limited Oxygen Index to 35 Corrosive Gas Emission None Very High Very High Very High Smoke Emission Extremely Low Very High Very High Very High Fire Retardant Properties Excellent Good Good Excellent The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design () is actively encouraging and accelerating global adoption of sustainable green building and EnviroPlus is a great fit for such initiatives. EnviroPlus jacketed cables are appropriate for paper mills, chemical plants, transit (tunnels, subways), zero-halogen applications, steel mills, clean rooms, Departments of Transportation, low-smoke applications, utility applications and computer rooms. EnviroPlus is highly flame retardant. The cable jacket will not melt, drip or run. This prevents the spread of fire to other surfaces and allows the core of the cable to remain intact longer, thus ensuring increased circuit integrity time for the cable. This charring effect helps keep other equipment safe from damage during a fire. EnviroPlus is Factory Mutual Group 1 listed, which means it is completely self-extinguishing in absence of direct flame. continuation of power in case of conductor or cable exposure to fire. A cable with higher flame retardant property will maintain circuit integrity long enough to effect orderly shutdown in event of a fire. EnviroPlus has a slick jacket with lower coefficient of friction than Hypalon. This allows the cable to be pulled into raceways and conduit with less effort. Lower pulling tensions during pulls lower sidewall pressures and decrease the chances to damage to the cable during installation. EnviroPlus has excellent cut through, crush and abrasion resistance to pass UL s Direct Burial Crush Test. Additionally, it has a Durometer Hardness value of 88 (Shore A) and passes the ASTM D1044 Abrasion Test (1,000 cycle). EnviroPlus has superior water resistance when tested per UL 1581, a test to measure the quantity of water absorbed by the cable. EnviroPlus has a High Limited Oxygen Index: which is a test that rates flammability of materials in a mixture of oxygen. It specifies the percentage of oxygen that must be present before the material will sustain flame. Enviroplus maintains circuit integrity by allowing Manufacturing quality. Delivering service.
