1 Graduates and Candidates Seeking Academic Appointments Fall 2015
2 September, 2015 Dear Colleagues, I am very pleased to introduce you to our recent and upcoming Ph.D. graduates from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. These individuals are seeking faculty and post-doctoral research positions. The purpose of the Doctoral Program at the Mandel School is to prepare scholars, teachers, and leaders to generate new knowledge on the policies and programs of social welfare and the practice of social work. The Mandel School s curriculum emphasizes the creative and evaluative skills necessary for independent inquiry. Our rigorous program prepares social work leaders who demonstrate competency in research, social welfare theory, teaching and leadership. Students also develop expertise in an area of social welfare including applicable practice theory, policy analysis, and program planning. It has been a pleasure watching these upcoming and recent graduates refine their research agenda and skills. All candidates on the market have had either a state or federal funded dissertation, have published scholarly articles, and have excelled in teaching Master s courses. The candidate s specialize in a range of areas including police-citizen relations, community violence, violence exposure, trauma, child mental health, child welfare, adoption, aging, and family caregiving. We hope that you will contact our upcoming and recent graduates directly about available positions at your school. Please feel free to contact me if I can provide you with any further information ([email protected]; (216) ). Thank you. Sincerely, David E. Biegel, Ph.D. Henry L. Zucker Professor of Social Work Practice and Professor of Psychiatry and Sociology Chair, Doctoral Program

My interests cover a broad spectrum of topicsrelatedtohealthandaging.aunifiedthemeofmytraining, practiceexperiences, andresearch interestsistocontributetoabetterunderstandingofissuesfacingindividualswithchronicillnessand theirfamilymembers. The overarching goal of my research is to contribute to enhancing health and quality of life (QoL) of individualswithchronicillnessesandtheirfamilymembers.myresearchinterestslieprimarilyinthe fieldofcancersurvivorshipwhichrequiresaholistic, multidisciplinaryapproach.socialworkplaysakey role in identifying and addressing the needs of cancer survivors and their families to their QoL. My dissertationresearchfocusedontheeffectsofstressors, familycommunication, andfamilycopingon mentalhealthoutcomesamongchineseiandkoreaniamericanbreastcancersurvivorsandexamined the moderating effect of acculturation on these relations. My findings suggest that better family communication and coping can contribute to improve the mental healthirelated QoL of cancer survivors. Duringmypostdoctoraltraining,Ihavebroadenedmyresearchtoincludegeneralcancerpopulations and their families and health disparities. I gained experience in conducting research using large, populationibased datasets, longitudinal analyses, and writing grant proposals. I also have established productive research collaborations with other investigators including health psychologists, physicians, and biostatisticians who study QoL of cancer survivors or caregivers. My current research endeavors continue to focus on identifying psychosocial and behavioral factors (e.g., coping, communication, health behaviors) affecting the QoL of cancer survivors and their families QoL. I plan to apply my experienceandintereststodesignandimplementasurvivorifamilydyadicinterventionthatfocuseson promotinghealthyfamilyfunctioningandhealthybehaviorsinbothcancersurvivorsandtheirfamilies.
