The Vikings go on the road this week for the always-tough Montana road swing, opening a span of five road games in the next seven during the month of January. The Vikings play at defending Big Sky regular season champion Montana in a Thursday night game at 6 p.m. PT. Then they bus across the state to face Montana State in a rare Saturday afternoon tilt at 1:05 p.m. PT. Portland State has lost in its last six trips to Dahlberg Arena, and its last four games at Worthington Arena. The Vikings are 6-31 in Big Sky regular season and tournament games played at Montana and Montana State since joining the league in PSU comes home for two games next week, then goes back on the road for three games in the final two weeks of January. The good news for Portland State is it appears to be on an upswing as the challenging games approach. The Vikings opened their Big Sky schedule on Jan. 2 with a home win over Sacramento State. It was a good win against a 7-5 team, and a program that had beaten the Vikings in their last four meetings. PSU is 5-7 on the season, but most importantly 1-0 in the Big Sky Conference and winners of its last two games. For the most part, the Vikings have taken advantage of an uptempo pace that has them averaging Viking Basketball 1

3 HEAD COACH TYLER GEVING Tyler Geving is in his seventh year as Head Coach of the Portland State basketball program after being an assistant and associate head coach for the previous four years. Geving s teams have had winning records the last two years and three of the last four. The team earned a berth in the CollegeInsider.com post-season tournament. Geving played a major role in the Vikings climb to two straight trips to the NCAA tournament during the seasons. The Vikings compiled a record over his four seasons as an assistant. Geving has been in collegiate coaching for 21 seasons. The Vikings close out the month with games at Sacramento State (Jan. 23), Eastern Washington (Jan. 28) and Idaho (Jan. 30). Beginning Feb. 4, six of the final 10 Big Sky games will be played at home. GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. MONTANA ALL-TIME SERIES: Montana leads the all-time series, 33-22, and the Big Sky Conference series, the Grizzlies are 15-3 at home against the Vikings in league play. The Vikings shot.370 from the field with 14 turnovers. A one-point game at halftime, the Grizzlies broke away with 15-0 and 16-2 runs in the second half. UM shot.549 from the field, hit three-pointers and 7-7 free throws. Martin Breunig led all scorers with 23 points. DaShaun Wiggins scored 17 points for the Vikings. MONTANA GRIZZLIES Montana was last season, 14-4 in the Big Sky Conference, winning the regular season title. The Griz lost to Eastern Washington in the Big Sky Tournament title game. Montana advanced to the NIT, losing to Texas A&M in the first round. Two starters and seven letterwinners return from last season. UM is 7-6 overall, 2-0 in the Big Sky, and 5-0 at home. Montana has won three straight games. SR F Martin Breunig was a first team All-Big Sky Conference performer last season. He leads the Grizzlies with 17.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game this year. Breunig is shooting.622 from the field to rank third in the Big Sky and 17th in the nation. JR G Brandon Gfeller averages 11.5 points per game. He is from three-point distance this season and only 3-9 on two-pointers. Gfeller is the current Big Sky Conference Player of the Week. JR G Walter Wright averages a team-leading 3.6 assists and 10.4 points per game. He also has 20 steals. JAN. 31, at PSU 80, MSU 62: Portland State ended a four-game losing streak to the Bobcats with a home win. The Vikings made 9-11 three-point field goals for a school-record.818 shooting mark. PSU jumped to a 15-point lead early and had a double-digit advantage the rest of the way. The Vikings shot.560 from the field overall. DaShaun Wiggins scored 18 points to lead four Vikings in double figures. Tim Douglas added 17 points and five assists off the bench. Michael Dison scored 13 points to lead the Bobcats. MONTANA STATE BOBCATS Montana State was 7-23 last season, 4-14 in the Big Sky Conference and tied for 10th. Two starters and eight letterwinners return from last season. MSU is 6-8 overall this year despite playing only two home games. The Bobcats are 1-1 at home and have not played a home game since Dec. 6. SR G Marcus Colbert was the Big Sky Conference Sixth Man of the Year last season. This year, as a starter, he is averaging 17.4 points and and a Big Sky-leading 5.4 assists per game. FR G Tyler Hall is an early candidate for Big Sky Freshman of the Year, averaging 17.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He shoots.417 from three-point range and.868 at the line. Montana State makes 9.1 three-point field goals per game and out-rebounds opponents by 2.0 per game. The Vikings have won two in a row - both at home. PSU has lost four in a row on the road. SO F Isaiah Pineiro has scored 61 points in the last four games (15.3 ppg), hitting from the field (.571). He ranks seventh in the Big Sky and leads the Vikings with a.570 field goal percentage. JR G Bryce White has 32 points and 10 rebounds in the Vikings last two games (16.0, 5.0). GR G Donivine Stewart has 18 assists, six steals and only four turnovers in the last four games. JR G Zach Gengler has made 13 free throws in a row (13-14 on the season). Portland State has won two games in a row. WHO IS NOT? Portland State is shooting.656 from the free throw line this season. The Vikings have shot (.729) in the last two games - both wins. PSU s top returning scorer from last season, JR F Braxton Tucker has missed the entire season while recovering from a knee injury. PORTLAND STATE LEADS THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE IN: Assists per game (17.5) Steals per game (8.2) HANDLE IT!: Turnovers have been a concern for Coach Tyler Geving this year. The Vikings were averaging 14.5 turnovers per game as they compiled a 3-7 record prior to Christmas. In two wins since the holiday, PSU has averaged only 10.0 turnovers. A DIFFERENT LOOK: Head Coach Tyler Geving started six different lineups through the first 10 games. In the last three games, he has stuck with the group of Donivine Stewart, Calaen Robinson, Bryce White, Isaiah Pineiro and Collin Spickerman. That appears to be working as PSU has played better in winning its last two. Eight different players have started games this season. Only SR C Collin Spickerman has started every game this season. Last season the Vikings had 10 different starting lineups in 29 games with 10 different players earning starts. STEPPING INTO A STARTING ROLE: SO F Isaiah Pineiro began the season as the Vikings key player off the bench. But he has played so well that Head Coach Tyler Geving has moved him to a starting role. The move has paid off as Pineiro scored 44 points with 18 rebounds and five assists in the last three games. Robinson ranks fourth on the team in scoring (10.9) and first in assists (3.6), steals (16) and three-point field goals (29). He shoots.420 in his neighborhood - the three-point arc. Robinson s 11 assists against Multnomah were the most by a Viking since Feb. 5, Robinson has seven double-figure scoring games. Ranks seventh in the Big Sky Conference in assists and eighth in three-pointers made. Scored 19 points with five rebounds at Washington State (12/6). Posted a career-high 21 points ( pt FG) with four assists against CSUN (12/17). Had 17 points (4-9 3-pt FG) with three assists and three steals in the win over Sacramento State (1/2). CALLING MR. WHITE: Since shaking off an early-season injury JR G Bryce White has upped his production. White ranks second on the team in scoring (12.2), while averaging 3.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals. Ranks sixth in the Big Sky Conference in steals. Had a season-high 20 points (7-11 FG, pt, 2-2 FT) with four rebounds and four assists against Pacific Lutheran (11/16). Scored 19 points with five rebounds and two steals in a win over Sacramento State (1/2). FORTISSIMO: GR F Cameron Forte has been loud and strong with his performance as a new Viking. He has moved into the role of sixth man to provide a spark off the bench, but still leads the Vikings in scoring (16.4) and rebounding (8.1). Forte ranks in the top 10 in the Big Sky in scoring and rebounding. Forte has three 20-point games and one 30-point game. Scored in double figures a team-high 10 times, he has three double-doubles on the season. SWAT STATS: SR C Collin Spickerman set a PSU record for blocked shots per game (2.48) last season while leading the Big Sky Conference. Spickerman has 21 blocks this season and 93 blocks in 41 career games, ranking fourth in PSU history. Spickerman ranks third in the Big Sky in blocked shots (1.8). Spickerman blocked four shots and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in the season opener at Grand Canyon (11/13). Spickerman scored a career-high 15 points at SIUE (12/12). He has two games of four or more blocked shots. Ranks ninth in the Big Sky in field goal percentage (.520). NOW AT THE LINE...: JR G Khari Holloway shot.931 from the free throw line last year at Mesa Community College to lead the nation at the JC level. He had consecutive free throws made streaks of 41, 28 and 19. So far this season, he is 7-7 for the Vikings. SPEAKING OF STREAKING: JR G Zach Gengler missed his first free throw of the season, but has made a team-high 13 in a row since then. Gengler is averaging career-highs of 6.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 20 minutes per game. BETTER OFF THE BENCH: Portland State s top performances by players coming off the bench: GR F Cameron Forte had 22 points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes against Pacific Lutheran. SO F Isaiah Pineiro posted 24 points and 14 rebounds in a win at UT Rio Grande Valley (11/22). GR F Cameron Forte had a double-double as well with 16 points and 10 rebounds. 6 WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PORTLAND STATE Portland State University, located in Portland, is the largest school in the state of Oregon with 28,241 students. PSU was founded in 1946 as Vanport College - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior college in , but competed in the Oregon Collegiate Conference (NAIA) beginning in to PSU became a four-year institution - Portland State College - in The Vikings won five OCC titles and competed in the NAIA playoffs twice. Portland State joined the NCAA in The Vikings reached the College Division playoffs in College Division was the forerunner to Division II. Portland State was given university status in During the 1970s, Portland State competed as a Division I program. The Vikings biggest star was Freeman Williams, who still ranks as the second all-time leading scorer in college basketball history behind Pete Maravich. Williams, a Division I All-American in 1978, scored 3,249 points in his career. The university dropped the men s basketball program in 1981 for budgetary reasons. It remained dormant until when basketball was reinstated and Portland State joined the Big Sky Conference. PSU has had seven winning seasons in its 13 years as a member, including four of the last five. Portland State won the Big Sky Conference regular season title in (19-9, 11-3), but lost in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals, missing a chance for the NCAA Tournament. In , the Vikings won the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles going 23-10, 14-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The resulting NCAA berth was the first at the Division I level for the Viking program. The Vikings lost to eventual national champion Kansas, but concluded the most successful season in school history. In , PSU once again won 23 games - matching the school record - and reached a second straight NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the second year in a row. With 78 wins from , PSU had its most successful era in school history. Portland State has had 19 first team All-Big Sky Conference selections since 1996, including two Big Conference Players of the Year (Seamus Boxley, Jeremiah Dominguez), three Big Sky Defensive Players of the Year (Seamus Boxley - twice, Scott Morrison), and four Big Sky Newcomers of the Year (Jason Hartman, Ime Udoka, Dupree Lucas, Jeremiah Dominguez), one 6th Man of the Year (DaShaun Wiggins) and one Big Sky Outstanding Freshman (Seamus Boxley). Among Vikings in the NBA, Freeman Williams and Ime Udoka each spent seven playing seasons in the league. Udoka is currently an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs. SR C Collin Spickerman scored a career-high 15 points in the Vikings loss at SIUE (12/12). JR G Calaen Robinson had a career-high 21 points ( pt FG) in the Vikings loss to CSUN (12/17). SO F Isaiah Pineiro had his second 20-point game of the season, posting 21 points (9-14 FG, 3-3 FT) with five rebounds and three assists as the Vikings beat Cal State Fullerton, (12/29). GR G Donivine Stewart added a season-high 17 points (6-8 FG, pt FG, 2-6 FT) with five assists and two steals in the game. Five Vikings scored in double figures as PSU washing away a five-game losing streak. Portland State opened Big Sky Conference play with a win over Sacramento State (1/2). The Vikings held the Hornets to 40% shooting and forced 16 turnovers. JR G Bryce White s 19 points led four Vikings in double figures as PSU won its second game in a row. The Vikings also ended four-game losing streak to the Hornets SEASON NOTES NON-CONFERENCE REVIEW Portland State wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 4-7 record. The Vikings started 3-2, but lost five straight during the month of December. An inconsistent lineup that included six different starting units in the first 10 games made it difficult for the Vikings to maintain offensive consistency. However, they managed to average 78.0 points despite giving up more than 14 turnovers per game and shooting just.648 at the free throw line. PSU was 3-2 at home, 1-5 on the road. PORTLAND STATE IN THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE Portland State begins its 20th season of Big Sky Conference play. PSU won the and Big Sky Conference regular season titles. The Vikings have had eight winning records in conference play and earned 12 Big Sky Tournament berths in 16 seasons eligible, winning the 2008 and 2009 Big Sky Conference Tournament titles. Portland State was picked to place sixth in the Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, seventh in the Big Sky Media Poll. The 18-game Big Sky Conference schedule is unbalanced due to the 12-team membership. The Vikings will not travel to Northern Arizona and Southern Utah this season, and will not host North Dakota and Northern Colorado. This marks the first year in Big Sky history in which all 12 teams will qualify for the post-season tournament. It also marks the first time that the tournament will be hosted at a neutral site; Reno, NV. The tournament takes place on Mar with the top four teams earning first-round byes into the quarterfinals. The Vikings are 9-10 all-time in the tourney. VIKINGS SIGN HENDERSON, RUMEL FOR Portland State men s basketball coach Tyler Geving has announced the signing of two high schoolers to National Letters of Intent for the academic year. The Vikings have signed Tyrell Henderson of Tempe, AZ and Brendan Rumel of Tucson, AZ during the early signing period. We are excited about signing two kids who are outstanding students and who are both high character kids, said Geving. They are both very disciplined on and off the court and these are traits we are looking for in our recruits. These are two players we expect to be big contributors over the next four years. Henderson is a 6-3 combo guard who attends Corona del Sol High School. He is part of a program that has routinely won state championships. It is also the former high school of current Viking guard Calaen Robinson. Tyrell comes from Corona Del Sol program where they have won four consecutive Arizona State Championships, said Geving. He brings a winning attitude to our program as well as being an outstanding student. Tyrell is a versatile player who takes pride in guarding the other teams top player. He has a high basketball IQ and I m excited to coach him over the next four years. Rumel, a 6-10 forward, plays at Rincon High School. As a junior he averaged 17.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. He also has shooting range for a big man, hitting 25 three-pointers over the past two seasons. Any time we can get a high school kid with height and skill, we feel very fortunate, Geving said. Brendan has a high ceiling as a player and we feel he is going to make great strides over the next four years. He has the ability to score inside and can also step outside to shoot it. Brendan is another outstanding student with high character. We are looking for him to make a big impact on our program. VIKING ONE-LINERS (and sometimes two) PSU has three players that competed for other Division I schools: Calaen Robinson (Arizona State), Cameron Forte (Georgia) and Donivine Stewart (SIUE). SR F Collin Spickerman and JR G Bryce White have both returned home after earning NWAACC Region Player of the Year awards. Spickerman prepped less than 10 miles from the PSU campus at Portland s Jesuit High School. He spent one season at Alaska Anchorage and one season at Clark (WA) College. In he was the NWAACC West Region Player of the Year after averaging 17.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots per game. White prepped less than five miles from the PSU campus at Portland s Benson Tech. He was named the NWAACC South Region Player of the Year in after averaging 27.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists at Chemeketa CC. JR G Zach Gengler was the Oregon 5A High School Player of the Year in JR C Namdi Okonkwo is the first 7-foot player in Portland State s Big Sky era ( ) and perhaps ever. PSU previously has had five players that stood 6-11 since reinstating basketball for the season. Portland State is in its 20th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference and Division I. PSU played basketball from before discontinuing the program. Basketball was reinstated for the season. PSU had the only men s basketball program in the Big Sky Conference and among the state of Oregon s four Division I programs to be among the top 10 percent recognized by the NCAA. Special Advisor Barry Adams, a high school coaching legend in the state of Oregon, was elected to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame on March 10, Adams spent more than four decades as a prep coach in the state. Assistant Coach Michael Plank spent a portion of his summer working with the Costa Rican National Team. Former Viking Ime Udoka played seven seasons in the NBA. He started 75 games for the Portland Trail Blazers in Udoka is now an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, and won an NBA title with the team in Julius Thomas, who holds Portland State records for games played (121), field goal percentage in a season and career (.671/.663), and career wins (78) was a two-time Pro Bowler for the Denver Broncos. Thomas played on two Big Sky Conference Championship/NCAA Tournament teams ( , ) at PSU. 8 Most recent game, Jan. 2, 2016: PORTLAND STATE 76, SACRAMENTO STATE 68 Portland, OR - Apparently coaches are right. They always preach that you can t shoot great every night, but you can always play great defense. Portland State did enough of the latter on Saturday to win its Big Sky Conference opener over Sacramento State, That was definitely tonight s case, said Viking Coach Tyler Geving in reference to his brethren s axiom. We held them to 40% shooting and our goal is always 42%. We battled through our own poor shooting and I think that s what defense does. The kids kept saying in the huddle, just keep defending, and don t worry about shots, they will come. Portland State also forced 16 Sacramento State turnovers, turning them into 21 points, including eight on the fast break on a night when PSU s outside shots would not fall. The Vikings got their conference season off to a good start at 1-0 and won their second game in a row. PSU is 5-7 on the season. Sacramento State s loss puts it at 7-5, 0-1 on the season. It was a sluggish start for both teams but the Vikings broke away from a 6-5 lead with a 14-2 run. Cameron Forte had five points, an assist and a key offensive rebound that set up a three-pointer by Calaen Robinson. A moment later, a Forte steal and breakaway dunk capped the Viking rally. PSU s largest lead was 20-7 and that Viking flurry was the bulk of the offense for either team in the first half. The Vikings led by halftime, but had shot only.353 from the field. They held the Hornets to only 9-28 shots (.321) and forced eight turnovers. A Dreon Barlett four-point play in the final seconds of the first half turned Sacramento State s deficit from 12 to just eight. The Hornets continued the comeback in the second half with an 8-3 run, closing the score to Meanwhile, Portland State s shooting continued to sour as they missed 12 of their first 16 shots of the second half. The Hornets were finally able to tie the game at on a pair of Eric Stuteville free throws with 8:02 left. With the game tied at 51, Bryce White made a nice feed inside to Forte for a lay-in, then stole a pass on the Hornets next possession and returned it for a dunk. PSU was up by four with less than five minutes remaining and hung on from there. The Vikings didn t shoot particularly well from anywhere on the court until the the last 1:13 of the game when they made 9-10 free throws to hold off the Hornets. Portland State was from the field (.392), 6-22 from three-point range (.273) and at the line (.714), but committed only 10 turnovers. The Vikings blocked seven Sacramento State shots and held the Hornets to shooting (.400). White led four Vikings in double figures with 19 points and five rebounds. Robinson scored 17 points, hitting 4-9 from three-point range. Forte came off the bench for 14 points and nine rebounds. Isaiah Pineiro added 11 points and eight rebounds. Justin Strings led the Hornets with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Stuteville had 17 points and 12 boards. COACH GEVING SAYS: Zach needs to continue to improve like he did last year. The second half of the season he played really well for us and took on the toughest defensive assignment every night, guarding the other team s best player. The main thing for Zach right now is his shooting percentage needs to go up. We need to get him to shoot close to 50% and his three-point percentage needs to be near 40%. He got a lot of confidence toward the end of last year, and we see a more confident player this year.
